Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Located in Fira this church is built atop the caldera with a commanding view of the ocean. The current church was completed in 1968 after being rebuilt due to damage from the 1956 earthquake. Above the entry portal is a fine mosaic and on the southwest corner of the property is an imposing bell tower. When we visited Santorini from 12/08 – 12/13 the gate was locked and main entry portal was boarded up, so we were unable to enter inside.

The Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral of Fira stands in the southern part of the city, right next to the Museum of Prehistoric Thera. The church was built in 1827 but in 1956 it was damaged by a disastrous earthquake. The temple was quickly restored and today it pleases the eyes of visiting tourists. It is an impressive white building with a wide white dome and a high bell tower. The arched arcades around the temple are characteristic, which form a small courtyard in its southern part. Inside you can admire wonderful frescoes painted by a local artist. The cathedral offers a wonderful view of the Santroini Caldera.

Went early in the morning as is just outside where I stay. Not much people and you can get good pictures. It will look illuminated and different again when the sun is on it. Surely you will see this church if you are at Fira. Very well maintained and beautiful interior. Worth a visit!

You are able to walk in and look at the church and the architecture. Music was playing and it was nice inside. You can go in as long as it is open. I did not see any hours but the front doors are open and if you want you can light a candle and pay for a donation to do it.

We visited during our free time on the tour. It is a large, pure white building. When we got lost, we were able to find the meeting point by using this as a landmark. The church is a place of prayer. We quietly admired it.

This cathedral occupies a prominent position in Fira just back from the cliff edge wall and on the edge of the volcanic caldera. It is a substantial structure and gives a good insight into the ways of Orthodox worship. It's easy to visit and photography is permitted and it is well worth the small detour to see and appreciate the splendour of it's interior. What's more it has free entry but there is a requirement that you are modestly dressed. There are a number of seats inside the building so visit and take a seat and observe the magnificent interior of this cathedral.

Even though all three of my visits to The Metropolitan Cathedral have been while traveling on a cruise ship, and the cathedral is therefore crowded with tourists, each time I am impressed by the beauty of this church. Also, each time, the piety displayed by other visitors is obvious.

Though small, it is in the heart of Fira and the transportation terminals. Hard to miss and very ornate. Breath taking interior. Great way to see a little religious history without a long trip or reservations.

Very beautiful church which looks out onto Caldera views. A must to pop in and see as free and only takes 15 minutes to take it all in.
