Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Despite being a NYC resident my whole life, somehow I never visited the Staten Island Zoo until now, with my wife and kids. We were pleasantly surprised at how well-organized and well-maintained this modest-sized zoo is. It is not a "small zoo" like the Prospect Park Zoo in Brooklyn; it is larger than that, though obviously nothing like the size of the Bronx Zoo. Though not under the supervision of the WCS, like all other NYC zoos, this zoo still packs in a great variety of outdoor and indoor animal exhibits, with animals from around the world. Upon entering, there is even a dinosaur exhibit, though thankfully none of these cage-free animals is actually alive! Free parking in a lot right across the street as well as a very reasonable price of admission (compared to even smaller zoos) really round out the appealing qualities of a zoo we will often be returning to. Thank you for a great summer day at the zoo!

Though this zoo is much smaller than Bronx Zoo, they do a lot with what they have. The animals seem happy and active. They have some great habitat designs for smaller animals that are a joy to watch. The staff is super friendly and they seem to really care about what they do. I usually find zoos a little depressing, but this one always has a fun, welcoming vibe. Great for kids or a date. I also love that they have chickens and peacocks roaming freely.

I came out for the Groundhog's Festival again this year and it was a nice day. The ceremony was much quicker than last year as it was Super Bowl Sunday still it was a nice morning.

It was much nicer this year as the weather was warmer and all the animal were out after the ceremony was over. I got to see most of the outdoor animals like the Eru's, Kangaroos and Ostriches this time around.

Don't miss visiting the gift shop/snack shop when at the zoo. There is a nice selection of foods that are great for kids. I also got one of the stuffed Staten Island Chuck's from the gift shop and it was really cute.

It is a nice way to spend the afternoon. Take time to see all the indoor displays as well. There is a interesting exhibition of snakes and monkeys to see and even a small aquarium.

It is fun to walk around the zoo.

Free parking, low admission cost, well-kept grounds with beutiful flowers. informative displays and a cafe with truly inexpensive prices! Docents were providing activities for children and answering guests questions. We all had a most pleasnt 3 hours here-lots of benches too for taking breaks

This was an amazing, quaint zoo nestled in the heart of Staten Island. It was easy to access / park (they have a lot) and the animals were quite varied and clearly well cared for. I enjoyed, will go again, and highly recommend!! also beautiful gardens.

This has to be the worst zoo I have ever been to. The animals in kept is smelly, cramped housing. The urine smell burned my eyes and it is not even late spring yet. The ducks were swimming in filthy water, there was garbage littered throughout the zoo, the cafe area has tables littered with crumbs and were sticky like fly paper. The petting zoo area was out of sanitizer and the washing sick was disgusting. The sand play area was full of rusty play trucks and broken plastic play items. I understand this is a small zoo, but the conditions there shows the indifference the care takers have. The little ponies to rise were obese. These poor animals deserve much better care. The bathrooms were grimy and had tissue paper all over the floors. I would give this place zero stars if there was an option.

We took my 2 year old grand son to the zoo he loved feeding and petting the animals. For a 2 yr old who can't see what an adult sees it's fine and dandy but I was less than enthused. The animals looked dirty and neglected and some cages and pens were too small. All in all it's a disgrace the animals have no quality of life. This place needs a loving hand.

I've been taking my son montly to the SI Zoo for the last year. In response to the other post, I've never seen a sick animal there, not once. The zoo is clean, staff is on hand interacting with either the animals or the visitors and they always have various actiivies for the holidays.

Yes, it is a small zoo that could be done in an hour, but it's a nice time out and very affordable, especially since it is free after 2pm.

The zoo is very small. Cettain animals should not be allowed in a zoo this size. It was very said to see certain cats in such a small inclosure. I will not visit this facility again i will not support such a establishment. These animals are not even allowed to see sunlight. They are inside the building.

I recently visited the zoo today with younger neices. This zoo has been a family tradition for over 30 years. I must say the zoo is getting better, it was clean, the employees were freindly and helpful. This is a very children friendly park and I reccomend a visit.
