About
The Heritage Centre therefore among other things aims at promoting tolerance, reconciliation and an inclusive society, bridging social and ethnic divides by telling the story of this dark chapter in the region’s history in an open and factual way. The creation of the Heritage Centre, and making it accessible to school children, who are the country’s future leaders, is also aimed to promote interfaith and inter-communal dialogue and understanding. Furthermore The Site is an important tourist destination, and by improving visitors’ facilities at the site and making it more informative and stimulating, the tourism industry as a whole will benefit, creating jobs and wealth, and helping to reduce poverty. The Heritage Centre among other things is also benefiting many people as it is a great opportunity to promote interfaith relations in Zanzibar.

- JudyOswestryUKOswestry, United Kingdom348 contributionsThought provoking, well displayed museumOn arrival there is a security check and pay desk ,can’tt remember exact amount but reasonable entrance fee. A guide attached himself as usual to us,when we said we didn’t need he said was included in entrance price! He was able to direct us around in the correct order seeing the inside of the cathedral, memorial ,and cellar, then left us back at the fascinating display with explanation of history and photos, this was well presented and thought provoking. We were pleased not to be tied to a group tour as we spent far longer here than many being rushed round. This is not a museum to be missed , if you don’t do anything else on your visit to Stonetown, visit this!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 October 2023
- saltsy372North Port, Florida363 contributionsOld Slave MarketEven though the original slave market area has been built over with a cathedral, it is an important area to visit when in Stone Town, because of the importance of the site to the establishment and continuation of the slave trade to Europe, the middle east and the Americas. The cathedral is very interesting, however it really doesn't hide what happened here and there are several exhibits, original and recreated attempting to show the inhumanity of slavery through the ages We walked from the hotel, through the maze of alleys in Stone Town, through the spice shops and market areas. It is a well worth while half day to experience and read about the horrors. You will need to dress appropriately to go into the cathedral, especially women.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 December 2023
- Larisa M.Transylvania, Romania490 contributionsI recommend this if you want to have a different experience but it is a sad place and very emotional. The Slave Market and Exibition together with the Anglican Basilica are a must if you are visiting Stone Town. The place has a very sad and touching story about the past slaves trade. Also there is a monument build in memory, which I found very emotional and sad. The place has an Anglican Christian church that you can visit as well and is very beautiful and big. Also the basement where the slaves ( men, women and children were kept before selling them away) is a place that you can visit also if you have a guide is better because he will explain how things happened. I recommend if you want to have a different experience!Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 January 2024
- Pratyush M128 contributionsMust visit place in Stone TownIf I have to point out only one “not to miss place” in stone town, then this would be it. The history of the slave market or the cathedral will leave you numb. You can see where the former slave market used to take place. There are 4 different spots where they take you inside this place with the guides explaining you all the history behind it. The entry fees to the place was $ 5 per person. The service of the guides is included in the entry fees. They require you to dress modestly, so they would give a sarong to cover up, in case you aren't dressed for it.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 July 2024
- David B44 contributionsA tremendous look back at the slave tradeThe museum was very somber. It portrayed the plight of East Africans during the active slave trade. We learned a great deal during our 90 minutes on site. The cost to enter was US$5.00 per person and we hired a guide who approached us outside the museum. The guide is free and you tip at the end based upon your satisfaction. We had a very good guide but I noticed others were not as lucky and appeared to be rushed through the various stopping points. The neighborhood can be a little rough so having a local tour guide to get you to and from might be helpful.Visited September 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 19 September 2024

This site is really a triple threat. The Anglican Cathedral is unexpected in Stone Town. Elegant and large, it attests to the power of colonial influence. The Museum is interesting but mostly information panels. You could spend a long time here but you'd do just as well reading a book about the subject. The Slave Cells are troubling and a must when visiting Stone Town. The cells really give you an idea of how awful man can be to man. Instructive and powerful, everyone should be made to spend some time in these hot, cramped quarters to try to make them understand that this must be prevented in the future at all costs.

When we arrived, we were approached by a man on the street claiming to work there and was our tour guide that was included in the entrance fee, then we would have to tip him. We tried to tell him we didn't require a guide, but he insisted, but it turned out that we were really thankful he was there! There's no signs or information boards really so having something walk us through the different parts of the sight was helpful. It was an emotional eery experience, definitely worth a visit. We spend two hours there, taking our time. Don't miss this, it'll show you a very real piece of history and help you understand the island.

It's a very humbling experience to learn about slave trade in a place where it was happening - quite literally. Your visit to Zanzibar will not be complete without visiting Old Salve Market. I'd also encourage everyone to take their time and dedicate more time in museum, and read thoroughly about the history of Zanzibar and slave trade.

the cathedral is is surprisingly big but nothing special inside. on the right side you can find the famous sculpture of slaves.
the museum is very informative, lot of pictures and text - so in case you are a bit into historical events, prepare at least an hour here.

To see where people was kept and the oxygen was so low to see where al lot of people died in one little space is mind blowing. The church is beautiful inside and also have great history. We will also recommend Juma as tour guide he told us what we Needed to know otherwise you will not know where to see everything his number is +255 777 219 121 . He made the tour interesting and did give us the highlights. Wow it scary to know what happened back then.

Well worth a visit to see the sad history of the slave trade in Western Africa. The underground holding vaults are horrid and give you a sense of what these people lived through before the market. The displays in the church about the slave trade are well done and the Anglican Church is beautiful. Definitely worth a visit

A sobering experience. There is a 5 dollar entry per person and would recommend you take the guide that approaches you. We had a very knowledgeable guide called David. If you don't have a guide you won't know where to go. There was a room at the end with plenty of information about the history of slavery in the region. I read some reviews about how dirty the place is etc. I think the place gives you a good idea about the awful inhumanity of man.

You got to go here to remind yourself (& the world) that Stone City, Zanzibar is mostly on the map because of the slave trade that the Sultan (with coercion from England) outlawed in 1783! Unfortunately in the world, the ILLEGAL slave trade goes on!
Zanzibar still honors the memory of the slave trade with historical tours. Don't do this one on your own lest you miss so much. We had a knowledgeable guide, Khamis Mpoka!

Hello, I am interested in visiting a historical tour in Tanzania that is closely associated with the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade,
I am staying in Nairobi, Kenya. My question is does anyone recommend we get a hotel while out there? Or would anyone recommend I look for something closer in Tanzania? This is on the island of Zanzibar, and my mom doesn't do too well with water... so I was thinking of Tanzania...
What are your thoughts?
Thank you so much

You can fly from Dar Al Salam, Tanzania to Zanzibar or fly directly to Zanzibar as they have their own international airport. If you can also stay a couple of days in Zanzibar the beaches are beautiful and visit the other places as well.
