    A touch of finesse
Prison island offers you and your loved one a touch of finesse. For environmental enthusiasts like me, the giant tortoises in the island were soothing and refreshing. I liked how the tortoises were being treated and had a blast feeding them. However, I wish Prison island was bigger enough to accommodate the numerous tortoises cramped up in the small space. Much appreciation to Babli (+255756983368) for his exceptional services and for guiding us throughout the entire expedition.

    Intereting
We took the 20 minute sail from Stone Town to Prison Island. A prison was built on this island but never actually used. It currently has a colony of giant tortoises the oldest being 197 years old. A nice short outing when in the Stone Town area.

    Short boat trip
Nice trip to see the Aldabra tortoise.we enjoyed the trip very much with our guide Suleiman.the beach is very beautiful . The boat ride was only 20 mins ride and the beach was very calm with no waves . The giant tortoise is said to be a gift from the island of Seychelles.it was a very short tour 2hrs only but our guide was very informative with the history and we paid only 22$ per person in a group of 6 people .Suleiman whatsaap +255756983368 Instagram @starzanzibartours Visit the prison early enough to avoid the crowd

    A must do in Zanzibar
Small tour, not really much to see, the old hospital is just a ruin and not a museum...but we had a cold beer at the small bar there...quite an experience. And the tortoises are so cute, it was very relaxing to spend a moment feeding them!

    Prison Island Thurtles
A short trip to the turtles without booking a whole island tour: I managed to negotiate a return boat trip for 20.000 tsh. On the island you will pay entrance fee and some taxes which all costs 16.000 tsh. Then a guide will walk you to the entrance to turtles and you can spend about 1 h with them, you can feed them, pet them and get a lot of interesting information about them. It’s a very cool feeling walking between those giant turtles, the oldest one may be 150 years older than you 😉. The boat driver waited for us at the exit and took us back to Stone Town.

    Worth visiting
Awesome place to visit,I was picked from my hotel in nungwi smiles hotel by Othman in a private taxi to stone town where I met my guide Suleiman and took the boat together to the island.my driver Othman was very friendly and played very beautiful local music on our way and explained me the meaning of the songs in English. The boat trip was only 20mins from stone town. My guide Suleiman was a really good man with great knowledge with all history of the island. It was a great experience feeding and massaging the beautiful tortoise.the island has many tortoise both small and big ones aged up to 195years old. Make sure you go with a guide and learn the history of the island.thank you Suleiman for the memory .we recommend him for all tours while in Zanzibar you can wassap him +255756983368

    Waste of money and time
Visited Prison Island expecting to find a historic monument only to find the Island is a disgrace. The giant turtles are treated like circus animals being constantly fed with cabbage leaves by tourists in terrible conditions. The very young turtles are crammed in a cage 'for their own protection ' The Prison itself is pretty much a derelict building with very little history or information boards. Save your money and enjoy a nice meal in pleasant surroundings instead of wasting your money going here.

You can book with me as your tour guide in zanzibar
I'm a tour guide based in zanzibar Unguja, also known as Zanzibar Island, is the main island in the Tanzanian archipelago of Zanzibar. Stone Town, part of Zanzibar City, is an old trade center, with mosques and winding lanes. The 1883 House of Wonders is a former sultan’s palace with a clock tower. The Old Fort now houses a cultural center and a stone amphitheater. Underground aqueducts fed hot water to the late-19th-century Hamamni Persian Bath

The conditions the tortoises 'exsist' in are awful.
Tiny dark shed with so many tiny tortoises in. All climbing on top of each other desperate to get out. Told they 'have to' be in there for 7 years to protect them! Utter rubbish! Picture attached.
So much space to build them something decent if this were true.
The fact is, they are not giant yet, therefore do not pull the crowds, therefore live an utterly miserable life for years.
The tortoises were put here on the island to suit man kind, they are now exploited by man kind to make money & none of this is ok. The tortoises looked like they had nothing they wanted to actally eat. I watched one suddenly look like he had a life to live when he spotted one tiny green sprouting plant to eat. Not the rotting mulch & deep puddles allover the floor. Miserable place. Wish i had never gone. Build the tiny tortoises somewhere decent!

Exploitation at its finest. Just returned from here and wished i had researched and read reviews before hand to have avoided going here.
The treatment and conditions of the poor tortoises here is something that needs to be stopped! So many of them bred here and kept in a small confined area surrounded by people simply so the owners can profit! I had not realised this, believing they had the roam of the island and were ethically looked after... what a niave thought, please don't fall for this like i did. I was visibly upset when i glanced and saw these poor animals choosing immediately to go no closer.
Ontop of this the island is a sham and simply designed now with a bar and cafe.. again simply to exploit money!
A place to be avoided. I hope soon the exploitation of these animals will stop. Even our guide admitted that he felt the treatment was wrong and how many other visitors were unhappy.

It was easy to find a boat to take us across to the island from the water front past the gardens, loads of them, haggle a price. Trip takes about 25 minutes, once there we were met by a local guide who showed us where to pay the entrance fee, $4 to the islands owners ( this is due to rise to $15 1st November- far too much in our opinion) and then a $3 government tax at another counter. He then took us around the tortoises enclosure. Large but bit smelly, did feel sorry for the young ones kept caged in a small dark area. On leaving the tortoises they tried asking for further donations to care for them- pretty sure none of this goes to making their lives any better, if it did they would be in better cared for surroundings. The prison held a restaurant. Past the deserted hotel and back onto the boat home. We were pleased with the trip and found it surprisingly easy to organise ourselves.

The way there is beautiful and not far from Park Hyatt/tembo hotel.
Theres a restaurant with animals around and the restaurant staff is so friendly.
The turtles area is so crowded with tourists.

If you get a chance to visit this island……do it. I read poor reviews and heard horror stories of force fed tortoises and kept in cages……. Not the case at all. The boat trip is about 20 minutes…… I imagine it to be choppy in high wind or certain tides, so if you seasick take that into consideration. It was morning for us and a little rocky but generally smooth and beautiful. Our boat was “Mr Bean” and was a great service.
I went solely to meet the “old guys” 200-300 year old giant tortoises….. so gentle ….majestic. I was in awe of them….. the things they have lived through over the years. They were not over fed or force fed….. we had some cabbage and if the tortoise wasn’t hungry…..it didn’t eat it and continued on his slow walk. Beautiful creatures. My only criticism (hence 4 and not 5 stars) was the cage for the babies…… it is necessary and for their safety until they get a certain size or they will get crushed……. But I kind of think with the space that is there…..they could have been bigger. But all the animals look well cared for…… look out for the miniature deer too and peacocks.
All in all a lovely little trip. The history behind the “prison” was interesting also. A very picturesque island. We teamed this trip with Stone Town, which was a good combination.
