Lovely shop for high style Mkoba baskets
Nov 2016 • Solo
Moto and Dada are two women run collectives on Zanzibar. The Moto shop carries the Ukili woven baskets of Zanzibar ($32-50) made in high style with both traditional and contemporaey patterns, along with woven hats ($15) and soap products from DADA collective in Matemwe in North Zanzibar.I wanted to visit the Moto workshop in Pete and was given the phone number to call which after countless unanswered emails seemed like all would be well. I called was told to visit and I even had my driver call in Swahili the next day but upon arrival in Pete found the shop empty! Seems like they are rebuilding but noone on the phone or at the shop in Stonetown told me. Someone isnt minding the business! So take that as a warning for visiting the workshop! Everything was in the shop in Stonetown. Also note while everything here is beautiful and unique it tends to be twice the price of any other shop

Best intentions, but don't buy the marmalade
Jul 2015 • Couples
Despite of the steep prices, I was all for the initiative and for supporting a good cause, so I bought quite a few products there as gifts. I also liked it that the prices were fixed, no bargaining.

Sadly, when I got home, I discovered that 3 jars of expensive marmalade were actually much older that I thought. The cover with the real expiry date was covered with a nice brown paper, and the label on the jar quoted another date.
The quality was poor and the taste was awful. One of the covers showed expiry date has passed a year before and the others showed it was 1-3 years old.

Check out what you get from there and beware of certain products that might expire.

Handcrafted by a womens cooperative
I bought local made soaps, lotion and schampoo that smells fantastic! They also got beautiful baskets, scarfs and even some chutneys and spices for sale.

Good shop
There are many shops that sell mass produced goods but this one is worth a visit. All goods are home made by women so while the prices, which are fixed, may seem steep the quality of the original items is exceptional.
