Yes, the location is beautiful, but I would not rate it as a 5 star hike, primarily because of HUGE crowds on the final, steep section before reaching the Laguna de los Tres. At times, there was a continual stream of hikers on the trail, separated by only a few feet, to the point that it was almost like being on the subway or in an airport. There are many spectacular hikes in the area, but everyone (myself included) seemed determined to do this one. As a result of the crowds, the trail is in terrible condition. Descending it in a light rain, as I did, is very dangerous. I saw several people fall, almost all of them young and overconfident in their ability to handle the steep, wet, muddy, and uneven terrain. Despite the fact that there are few places that you could actually fall off a cliff, I consider it to be among the most dangerous of the many, many trails I have hiked. I think this is really more of a "tourist," Instagram, or bucket list trail, rather than a real hikers' trail. I believe the crowds are at least partially due to the park management, tourism industry, and web-based travel advice that funnel everyone into this one location. For some reason that I cannot understand, the park management discourages people from hiking to Laguna Sucia or to the laguna at the base of the Piedras Blancas Glacier, saying the trails are rough or non-existent. While this is undoubtedly true, it seems like alternate trails should be constructed to these other, similar locations, given the number of visitors. Do yourself a favor and pick one of the many different, less crowded options in the area.

At the age of 62, this, no doubt, was the most challenging hike I've ever done. I admit, I'm not real fit, as I practice yoga over cardio, which this demands. At the junction where the hike takes you up a very steep trail the last 400 meters, the sign said it would take one hour. Ha! Took me an extra 40 minutes over that hour, and it was full of huge rocks, loose gravel, all with a pounding heart and several rests to catch my breath. Many times, I nearly gave up. But our patient guide kept encouraging me, "one step at a time, take it easy, rest when you need to." Finally, we arrived! Glorious! I felt like I was looking at the most beautiful place on earth, and I've seen many beautiful wild places. Just stunning! A great sense of accomplishment! Getting back down was also a challenge, but didn't take quite as long. Still treacherous though. The entire hike from the east, where a van dropped us off, up to the top, and back down to town in the west, and to the other side of town to our hotel, was a total of 15 miles (according to our phone's health app) and ten hours. My body is used to hikes about half that length and difficulty. Hips, knees, ankles and toes all hurt the next few days, and we ended up canceling our next day's long hike, and chose to do a short, easy hike to a waterfall instead, just perfect! It was all worth it in the end though. Do it while you are healthy and have the energy, and maybe younger than me! The reward is worth every step and grimace along the way!

Please do not intervene in nature, we can do a lot of harm to the animals with our food and to the fragile ecosystem of the place with our waste.
For its part, the trekking was very demanding with many climbs on the way out and with really difficult sections in the last kilometers but we were able to do it without having experience and a not very athletic physical condition, stopping several times.
You pass through different landscapes where there is more humidity or more wind in each one, so you should wear a coat. The ground is completely uneven and with many stones, so I advise against starting the trek if you do not have mountaineering or trekking footwear. I recommend having two canes that can be rented in town for $4000.
I recommend doing the official trail and not the alternatives since it is much safer, more careful and signposted, and has the same difficulty as the others.

Starting off, completely admitting that my husband and I are not in shape by any means. We did the 20 km over 10 hours or so, and that last KM (both up and down) was absolutely grueling. On the way back to El Chalten I felt like I was in a daze. HOWEVER, this was quite possibly the most beautiful and rewarding experience of my life. The entire trek was absolutely beautiful, and the cherry on top, was literally that, the cherry at the top of the trail. This view was SPECTACULAR, so much so it brought tears to my eyes (probably half exhaustion related, who knows). I think being young was ultimately what helped, but you would definitely benefit from having good cardio. The trek before the last KM was extremely doable, didn't have any issues with that.

This is an amazing hike , all the terrain leading up to it (we started at Hosteria Pillar ) and of course the lakes at the top of that very steep climb. Then the walk back to town with the gorgeous (Patagonia emblem) as a backdrop. Start early we encountered crowds on the way back down at about 1pm . Keep in mind you will be sharing this walk with people that are hell bent on getting to the top I presume instagramming and hell bent on getting back down again. Still an amazing day - in summer the days are super long so you don't have to rush.

The hike lives up to all the hype!! Long, but not technically challenging and no exposure. Unfortunately the snowfall came early and the last steep climb to the lake was closed due to safety concerns. But the hike is still worth it even without the laguna: the views of Fitz Roy are phenomenal, and with the autumn colours, makes for an amazing day of easy hiking.

There are two options to do this trekking. One is to leave and return from El Chaltén, the other is to leave from the Río Eléctrico and return to Chaltén. We did the latter. I recommend it since you avoid the first section of quite complicated ascent.
We went on a transfer from Chaltén to the Río Electrico, which is called the Pilar path. Beautiful landscapes. You can see the Piedras Blancas Glacier. The route is of medium difficulty, to go calmly, most of it through a forest.
Then, both trails join when you reach the Poincenot camp. And that's where the complicated part begins. A very complicated climb, with loose stones, in addition to many people going up and down, water flowing through the thaw.....with patience and care. You get to a part where it seems like you're already there, but no!!!! Another very complicated section is missing.
We arrived and you can't believe it, you can't believe you did all that nor the view. The impressive green lagoon contrasts with the Fitz Roy!! It's worth it.
You can go down to the lagoon and do another section to the Sucia lagoon (we didn't do it, I couldn't take it anymore)
We ate something enjoying the landscape and recharging our energy to head back.
The descent is very complicated, as much as the climb.
We return to the camp, use the bathroom (latrine), refill water in the river and begin the return. Very slowly, regulating forces.
All the time you see landscapes to treasure.
We passed by the Capri lagoon, beautiful. There were many people resting, having a picnic. We follow.
The last section, which is downhill, is hard, due to the fatigue you have.
We arrive at Chaltén.
It took us the entire journey walking, 10 and a half hours. We stopped little.
Tips: wear appropriate footwear, layered clothing (it's hot, cold, windy, everything together), light backpack, water bottle that can be refilled later, energy foods, walking sticks (we rented a pair, we used one each), sunscreen, something to cover your ears, since when there is wind, it is quite annoying, sunglasses.
We had a dream day!! We were able to see Fitz Roy without clouds (they say it happens only 50 days a year)
It's exhausting, but it's worth it. Also a personal challenge.
Recommended for trained people (older people, parents with little ones, everything, but it gets difficult)

We took a taxi to the Electric River which saved us 2 hours of walking. There began the low difficulty walk through terrain that crosses steppe, forests and very well signposted rivers for approximately 2h1/2 until reaching Camp Poincenot.
There the real ascent of medium/high difficulty will begin.
It is recommended to use grippy boots or trekking shoes. Also the use of canes that will help when going up and down since the terrain is rocky and slippery.
Upon reaching the top you will be rewarded with a wonderful view. And if you are lucky and the day is clear you will see the turquoise lagoon that is at the base of three needle-shaped peaks: Saint Exupery, Poincenot and Fitz Roy.
You can rest and eat something and then to the left continue a little more and you will see the Dirty Lagoon.
Then the descent will begin, which will take 1 to 2 hours. We will pass through the Poicenot Camp again and continue the descent passing through the Capri Lagoon, beautiful viewpoints, until reaching the El Chalten parking lot. Which will take approximately 3 hours.
Dream and unmissable visit for those who dare to do it!

Strenuous hike but not impossible for a family. Take your time and bring hiking sticks/good shoes for the final portion (more straight up than switch back - stop often as needed and hydrate)! Gorgeous if somewhat crowded at top. Take time out for a break and to see mini treks to waterfalls and glaciers. Lost phone among rocks and wind came up suddenly - secure loose items and bring a windbreaker! You'll have an amazing treat for your achievement, but it does take some work to get there.

I’ve been waiting to see this place for years thanks to the pandemic but god was it so worth the wait.
Not for the faint hearted, a hard day and there was some seriously stupid, unprepared people on the trail.
We clocked it at about 15 miles with a total 4000ft climb during the day but all absolutely worth it! We set off about 9:30 from hostel El pilar and ended up back in town by 7 which included a few breaks for food etc. really enjoyed this route as it meant no doubling back and we got to see even more of amazing Patagonia.
The trail is largely gentle ups and downs until the ascent to Laguna de los tres. That is an unrelenting vertical climb but wow are the views worth it. The sun just about came out as we reached the top which was just incredible. We couldn’t quite see the top of fitz Roy for clouds but the rest of the range was just unreal. Definitely recommend a little walk round to the left to see the ‘dirty’ Laguna. Much quieter and another great view point and we found it slightly more sheltered from the winds.
Make sure you’re prepared for all seasons - we had rain, sun, 45mph winds on top so layer up, hat, gloves and buff are essential. You’ll also need a waterproof coat, trousers, walking boots and waterproof cover for your rucksack.
I had 4 layers and was cold on top so people I saw going in a jumper, jeans and trainers are just asking for hyperthermia as well as wasting mountain rescues time.
As noted it’s a long day so take plenty of water, we ran out near the end and had taken 2 litres each. Plenty of snacks like cereal bars, energy gels and sweets also come in handy. We stopped for lunch but it definitely helps to have small snacks as you’re walking to keep your energy up.
Overall utterly INCREDIBLE, stop thinking about it and just do it.

Hi, on the Laguna de los Tres hike, how bad is the exposure? I'm acrophobic (fear of heights) but OK if there the trail and landscape is wide enough, and there are not sheer drop-offs.
I look forward to you replies,
Thanks,
Liz
Written 27 August 2023
There are no shear drop offs. You should be fine except maybe the hike up to the glacier which is also not on a cliff edge and is open but it is quite up hill. When I was there it was VERY crowded and VERY windy. If that is the case when you are there I might recommend skipping that part. Yes it’s the iconic photo spot but I’m not afraid of heights but I was quite nervous of slipping in those conditions. Good luck it’s a beautiful trail.

Hola !
Come liviano mucha agua y a disfrutar!!
Saludos.

I have seen the photos of this lake completely frozen. I am planning to go in the end of November. Is it still going to be frozen at that time?

I went there on Dec. 3rd. The lake was frozen. However, the lake to the left was melted, and beautiful.

Will be hiking on February 2019, how many layers do you think should we wear? If we rent a car from El Chalten to Hosteria Pilar, how much does it cost? Or if we take a taxi, how much does it cost?
Written 15 June 2019
It will be impossible to hike in Feb 2019 unless you go back in time. We looked into a ride to Pilar - it was like $10. When we hiked up beginning of March, it was a sunny day and warm. I had three layers and removed the middle fleece. Once we got to the top I put it back on because it was bit nippy there when you are not moving.

Hello, is it possible to start and end the trekking at the Osteria? Also is it possible to take our car to the osteria? Thank you
