Located in the spectacular Shoalwater Islands Marine Park, just 45 minutes south of Perth is Penguin Island- a beautiful, unspoilt nature reserve home to WA's largest colony of little penguin as well as dolphins, sea lions, stingrays, pelicans, ospreys and more. Visitors can see the penguins being fed by rangers at the Discovery Centre. It's also fantastic for swimming, snorkelling, having a picnic or just enjoying some of the best coastal scenery in Perth. Rockingham Wild Encounters operate an hourly ferry service to Penguin Island (it's only a 5 minute ride), glass bottom boat cruises of Shoalwater Bay and adventure style cruises to watch the local dolphins and explore more of the marine park. Sea Kayak Tours and Kite boarding Lessons are also available.

Well, the selfish me is reluctant to write this review. I nearly piked as it was a 41C day in Perth but was soooo glad I didn't. We got there in under an hour from the Kalamunda Hills, using the Roe Hwy and Kwinana Fwy route. It was a nice drive! We managed to get shaded parking right near the... More

Hi Aggie M, Thank you for your great review of Penguin Island. As per the information on our website, the ferry runs every hour on the hour between 9am - 3pm. As you have mentioned, the summer holidays are a busy time of year but especially between 15th December - 15th January as this is our peak season. We always... More

We walked on the sand bar to the island when it was low tide. It was awesome. The water range from ankle deep to thigh level. There were fishes and crabs while we were walking to the island. We managed to see many penguins. Too bad didn't see any sea lions on the sand bar. The kids loved it. My... More

By far, the most about of birds I've ever seen in one place before. From the pelicans, to the various terns and silver gulls, as well as the little penguins, this island is a bird sanctuary - a safe haven for them to nest and breed. Penguin Island is home to Western Australia’s largest colony of little penguins - the... More

Hi Clare H, Thank you for taking the time to review Penguin Island. The island is a sanctuary home to many species of birds including Bridal tern, Caspian tern, Pied Cormorant, Pelicans and more- not to mention the largest breeding colony of little penguins, it really is such a special place. As you have mentioned, there are no bins on... More

Took a package for ferry, penguin feeding and sea lion ferry tour (AUD $38.50/pax). If you ask me, I would say it's reasonable fun for the family. The beach and surrounds make reasonable place for a picnic (so please do pack some food/drinks and a picnic mat). We managed to catch some dolphins during the sea lion ferry ride, that... More

Hi MeganLLP, Thank you for taking the time to post your positive feedback here on Tripadvisor. It is great to hear that you were lucky and saw dolphins on your Penguin and Sea Lion Cruise! We agree that that package is definitely value for money with those inclusions. The Australian Sea Lions on Seal Island are all male and lately... More

Went there on new years day, penguin island pretty much sums it up. There is a recurring show where you can all file in and watch some greedy little penguins speed around to catch some fish. There's also a boat tour that drives you out to see some sea lions. Nice if you like that sort of thing, I thought... More

We woke up early in the morning to drive from Fremantle to the ferry terminal/jetty so that we can reach Penguin Island by taking the first ferry. It was a Saturday; hence traffic was good. We reached early and the shop was not opened yet (open at 830am). The weather was good, though rather windy and a bit too cold... More

Hi jtee07, Thank you for your feedback. Unfortunately the weather conditions are beyond our control, generally November through to February are fine weather wise but we do get the odd day that is colder than average. Viewing opportunities through the glass bottom vary from day to day depending on the weather conditions and wildlife. The main highlight of this tour... More

We went on the Dolphin, Sea Lion& Penguin tour. It was a very windy & cool day for December. But we got to see every animal available! Dolphins all around the boat. Sighting Sea Lions on an island sleeping. Lots of birds from the boat nesting on the many islands. Penguin show was very informative, up close with the penguins.... More

Island is small, but beautifully unspoilt. Lots of local fauna - terns, gulls, pelicans etc. Wild penguins very difficult to spot, so don't get your hopes up. There's no food at the island, so bring your own provisions and have a nice picnic at the island. The penguin conservatory cum feeding session was quite a disappointment, so saving some money... Great picnic spot. We kayaked over and secured a good spot early. Make sure you take a walk around the entire island. There are some awesome views from the lookout and is a great opportunity for selfies and group photos. Make sure you visit the Penguin Sanctuary to watch a feeding.
