Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The Catalpa was a ship sailing under the United States flag; it rescued six Fenians, who were political prisoners, held in Western Australia, Irishmen who took up arms to fight for Ireland's freedom in foreign lands were known as Wild Geese, This is an impressive memorial, highly evocative of the men who fought for Ireland's freedom.

Very picturesque spot to reflect on what happened here many years back. Good information on the Catalpa and the hardships people endured.

There are a number of similar memorials featuring wild geese, the symbol for exiled Irish soldiers and personage. Impressive monument with surrounding plaques commemorating the escape of Irish Fenians, Robert Cranston, Thomas Darragh, Michael Harrington, Thomas Hassett, Martin Hogan, and James Wilson. who were given passage by the American whaler, Catalpa, off Rockingham following their escape from Fremantle Prison in 1876. The whaler had been purchased and refitted by another Fenian, John Boyle O'Reilly, who had escaped from a convict gang near Bunbury in 1869. For those interested in Irish/Australian history, a memorial to O'Reilly is located at the junction of Buffalo Road and the Leschenault Peninsula in the Harvey Shire.

I remember going to the first opening of the Catalpa Memorial, whereby a enactment of the actual escape was performed. There will be an actual re-enactment some time this year, I think by the Rotary Club in Palm Beach or Rockingham.. I intend to go as it is also not far from my home, but also I am very interested in the history of the event.

The statue was very fitting and it shows just what sort of society there was in those days, with the way those men were treated.

The first time I saw that monument, I thought it was so beautiful. It showed 6 wild geese flying away. That was cool!

I didn't know that the 6 wild geese were 6 Fenians who had escaped from Fremantle in 1876.

The Fenians found an U.S. boat with the US flag, The authorities could not fire at them. The Fenians reached the US and they were free. The geese had flown away.
