Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Old Fort Niagara has such a tale to be told!!!! If your are interested in a bit of history or just want to experience the wonderful view of Lake Ontario, Lower Niagara River and our neighbours to the North, Canada, please visit this beautiful fort. You won't be sorry that you made this a point of interest on your vacation to Western New York and Youngstown!!!!!

Old Fort Niagara is a hidden gem. You step back in time amongst the original 18th century buildings.
The fort has re-enactors who recreate life in the past. There are musket demonstrations and many exhibits depicting life at the fort.
Old Fort Niagara is operated by the Old Fort Niagara Association and the entrance fee, along with the museum shop sales contribute to running the Fort by the non profit organisation.
The Fort is in a beautiful location and certainly worth a visit.

So much history right around the corner from me. My kids have gone numerous times and all seasons to experience something different. My daughter is infatuated with ghosts and spirits so she especially likes it during Halloween time. My son even went with his social studies class and had a sleepover in the winter. Amazing!!

We were very surprised. On a regular day, I was expecting this to be a 1 hour tour, but they were having a special event where folks were dressed in specific uniform dating back to the 17th Century and all the way to present day; as well as the appropriate artillery, too.

When you arrive at the Old Fort you receive a map of the complex with numbered checkpoints that describe each point along the way. The visitor center also contains a museum that goes into further detail about the fort and time periods.
The grounds were well maintained and the buildings well kept. One of the main buildings within the fort is in the midst of a renovation (May 2023) but the workers did a great job of keeping the disruption to a minimum and the building itself is still accessible.
Every hour, a guide will demonstrate the firing of a musket. It was fun to see but I don't know if it's necessarily worth it to wait any length of time. Check it out if you are in the area! As a fan of history it is easy to see it come alive at Old Fort Niagara.

Great stop for a look back in history, leisurely walk about the grounds, wonderful view across the lake, don't forget to check out the lighthouse.

Besides Old Fort Niagara itself the state park is a nice place to relax. The views of Toronto across Lake Ontario are beautiful. Always a cooling breeze coming off the lake...perfect for the hot, humid days. Picnic areas, shelters, a playground, swimming pool and nature center in a small but wooded park. Plenty of shade or sun. There isn't much beach but enough to walk and find some beach glass, shells or driftwood. It's at the end of a nice bicycle path from Lewiston around 6 miles south that goes along the Niagara River. The sunsets are spectacular too.
It is free to enter but there is a parking charge. Pool use has a fee.

After taking in Niagara Falls and the beautiful area hiking, we wanted something a little different. We found a brochure at the aquarium and thought a quick trip here would be interesting. I’m so glad we did, but I wish we’d known there was so much more than what we expected. I’d recommend coming earlier in the day rather than later so you can have time to enjoy the movie, the re-enactments, the small museum, and a guided tour, which we all missed (we rushed to see the site thinking it would rain, and not knowing the schedule of offerings given the area itself was open until 7pm this time of year). The area was quite scenic and made for some wonderful photography opportunities. Most areas were open to explore at our own pace, with rooms in the “castle” had period furniture/items inside. At least two areas had audio description in English and French. Written information scattered about was interesting and gave a good reflection of the differing occupants and life/history of the period. The visitors came from all over the world and everyone appeared to get along nicely and cooperatively. The staff was friendly and informative, and common areas such as the bathrooms were clean and adequately stocked. The little gift shop had a nice variety of wares. Military discounts were available. The little lighthouse did not appear to be open during our visit.

I don't know why there are 2 Old Fort Niagara attractions listed on Trip Advisor. This attraction is the same as the #1 attraction, Old Fort Niagara. They are the same place.
Old Fort Niagara is a bit north of Niagara Falls. It is a great piece of history on the shore of Lake Ontario.
It is best to start in the small museum and view the short film before wandering down to the fort. It helps you understand what went on at the fort so much better.
The fort has many buildings to explore and wander through. Our kids loved it!
We loved the reenactors that roamed the fort. We even got a private rifle demonstration.
Outside the fort is a state park that has ball fields, a pool, playgrounds, and picnic tables. It is a great place to spend the day.
There are no restaurants or shopping nearby. There is a free shuttle bus that runs from the fort to Niagara Falls (and other stops).

This is a well maintained for rich in history of the region from around 1800 for at least 60 years. The buildings are in good repair and well marked; a plus is beautiful views of the Niagara River and Lake Ontario. Those interested in the many conflicts between the US and British Canada will find the fort fascinating, and probably want to visit the Canadian fort on the opposite side of the river
