What a special, unique phenomenon! Approximately 5:30 pm to 6 pm Mid-October to early November you can watch the Shadow of the Bear grow from a mouse to a cat to a bear. You need a clear night without clouds blocking the setting sun.

Shadow of the bear is unique. Please read the other reviews for months and times. I did not have the detour when I went. Timing is key, so is parking. There is a pull off that is not marked, just about 5 miles from Cashiers...More

Stopped at this overlook while driving in Cashiers and it is beautiful! There is not any signs but you can't miss it! The mountains and sky meet like a painting, be sure and stop for pictures!

There are no signs for this location. there is a marking but it is 10 meters down the hill and only seen if you stop. There is a pull off ramp to enjoy the view and well worth the stop

We were thrilled to be visiting in late October and be able to drive to this overlook around 5:30 pm EST and see the Shadow of the Bear! Watch for traffic!

We were afraid we might be a bit early (October 16) but I noticed there had been a frost in the area. The brown kudzu and hosta gave it away. The view was absolutely stunning, one of the best I have seen in the Smokies....More

Great place to stop and take pictures from the side of the road. Gotta be very careful as it is on a curve and the road is busy. Really have to look and listen for the traffic. Stopped by here two separate times, once when...More
