- 1sabellayap2 contributionsChina HighlightWent during the latter part of National Holiday and was pleasantly surprised that there weren't that many people at all! Leading up to the trip we were being warned by people already that we might not be able to fully enjoy because of the sheer amount of people (think 人山人海) but when we got there it wasn't crowded at all! The National Park is beautiful but it's so big it can be overwhelming at times. There are free shuttles that can take you to different parts of the park which are very easy to find and run pretty regularly, we probably waited a maximum of 10 minutes for a shuttle. We entered through the east gate and took a (free) shuttle to the 10-mile gallery then took another shuttle to yuanjiajie. Ended the day at Tianzi mountain where we took a cable car down then another shuttle back to the east gate. We were able to see everything we wanted to in 1-day! As foreigners, we were worried tickets would sell out due to National Holiday but Kelly (zjjkelly on WeChat) helped us book all our tickets and suggested which routes in the National park to take. Highly recommend the national park and kelly's services!Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 9 October 2023
- MichaelBeijing, China29 contributionsThe place we want to come back toWe spend 5 days there (first rainy day was for a short rest) and advise all the visitors to plan at least 3 days for the national park. Because the weather changes every several hours and it is difficult to predict clouds on the top. One day we spend for the Avatar mountain and Golden stream. We do not use cablecars as the stairs up the hill were in an excellent condition. The reward was a beautiful world of monkeys and a wild forest we observed around. We did not use train service on the way back as it is very slow and there is a good path nearby (without stairs this way). The second day we spent to go through the Golden steam and Oxigen square and then went up to the Village near the cablecar upper station. We think that it is the most breathtaking place in the whole park. The third and fourth days we spent also on the top of mountains near the Oxigen square but many roads and stairs were closed (not under service for a long time or under repairmen). And sometimes we were forced to turn back, having almost gone down to the plain. These days the main accent was given to the Avatar Mountain. However there are many great places, not so famous but not less beautiful. Though much more difficulty to achieve them in the park.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 28 December 2023

Rock formations, cruises down lakes, hikes, jostling with people, bus rides and must have lots of imagination to visualise the rocks formed by long term.wind erosion. Excellent place to visit. Visitors are generally friendly and helpful. But marred by very poor signage as after you enter the right track there are hardly any diatance markers nor artows pointing to the correct directions or worse no signs, totally diaappear leading to frustrating retracing climb back up many flights of steep and.narrow steps/slopes. In the bus, the recorded message in English do not make sense. There are hardly any park staff or office to seek help when we needed assistamce but only ro encounter rude and impatient workers manning the ticket machines pointing to directions and shouting at us, even when asking politely in Chinese. Since walking in the park is mostly 1-way, when we got to.the South gate and wanted to head back to the East gate we were surprised to be told there was no park bus doing that route but to exit the park and pay to use local transport to get there. - Florent HNorth Sulawesi, Indonesia204 contributionsAn absolute blast! It's all on the title:). I won't write much here as everything has been pretty much said in the thousands of reviews. One thing maybe: this is a huge area, you won't cover it all in one full day. My advice plan 2 full days to do it. Furthermore the entrance tickets is valid for 4 days. Onsite there are cable cars and elevators. You can of course hike too. Definitely a must do if you are around.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 1 June 2024

Best places to visitThe Zhangjiajie national park is an amazing scenic place , definitely highly recommended for those who are looking for nature and adventure. We had been to the national park with our teen children , they enjoyed it . Walking along the edge of the mountain was truly awesome . Very scenic and highly recommended. We were lucky to have good weather during our trip/hike. Awesome !! Will come back again 😊Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 6 June 2024

Despite the crowds, our tour company provided us with a skip -the -line experience, which was a lifesaver and made our experience 10 times better.I highly recomend visiting this place especially if you opt for the fast - track skip the line service. - Ian APenang Island, Malaysia79 contributionsAvatar-tastic!!Zhangjiajie National Park is a sprawling mass of incredible scenery and majestic rock formations that should form the basis of all trips to the area. The bus services offer easy access to all parts of the park and the numerous staff at all the car parks are always helpful when directing you on your merry way. Getting there early is the best way to avoid some of the crowds, but ultimately you have to embrace the fact that it’s an area of outstanding natural beauty, China has 1.4 billion people (plus tourists!), so at any point, at least a percentage of them are going to be in Zhangjiajie National Park! The views are amazing in any weather but the highlight for us was meandering along the “whip” in the valley of the park, with the steady flowing stream and imposing rock formations all around! One slight frustration is the limited English and plethora of different maps, which can be tricky to understand without help from a friendly local. Overall, it’s well worth a day or so to explore all corners of this amazing natural wonder!!Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 August 2024

Truly amazing experience. As westerners we were in a real minority. I think we saw about 20 others in four days. But the Chinese welcome and helpfulness made this experience even better.
There is only one tip I would give: hire a guide. We hired Chris Tan (tanjunxi@126.com). A wonderfully informative chap who knew just where to go and most importantly, when. He drove us around and we managed to avoid virtually all the queues. We saw the lot too! He was attentive to our food requirements too. We like Chinese food but he wanted to be sure that we didn’t get things we might not expect ...all that in an authentic restaurant.
His service extended to picking us up at the airport, dropping our daughter back there and giving us lifts after his guide services had ended. He made our trip very special. Add to that one of the best sightseeing experiences we have had (and we travel a lot!) and this is an unbeatable package at an affordable price...believe me ...it’s worth it!

Unlike the Hollywood blockbuster the national park was a breathtaking spectacle well worth seeing. The sandstone monoliths have more character than any of the acting performances seen in Avatar and the local monkeys provide more nuanced dialogue.
If you see one film this year, pick anything other than Avatar. If you visit one national park, make it this one.

The landscape is just amazing. Park is quite big and can get very crowded with lots of loud Chinese tour groups. Would recommend to plan ahead where you want to go. If you want to beat the crowds, go as soon as the park opens (7.30AM in our case), take the elevator and you have the first 30 minutes in peace and quiet before the tour groups arrive. Cable cars are also very nice. We tried some walks outside of the most popular places which were not that great. Trails around the grand sightseeing platform are not maintained at all, would rather recommend hiking down from Tianzi mountain after taking cable car up.

I am absolutely impressed with this place. I did a private three day tour that included Zhangjiajie National Park, Tianzi Mountain, Grand Canyon, Glass Bridge, Baofeng Lake and Tianmen Mountain, and all of it was perfect. Alisa and Kevin from China Highlights did a fantastic job, arranging everything smoothly. I highly recommend any international tourist or expat living in China to enquire with China Highlights - Alisa tour advisor.

We took bullet train from Fenghuang to Zhangjiajie ( only takes 50 minuets), the first destination we visited is Zhangjiajie National Park, this park is really really huge, our guide told us that needed 3 to 4 full days to visit all attractions inside, we just chose to pay a visit to Yuanjiajie & Tianzi Mountain. How marvelous the nature scenery, numerous sandstone pillars are standing in front of us, looks like unreal. Bailong elevator is also gorgeous, less than 2 minuets it transfers us to the top of mountain.
This is our plan inside the park: take shuttle bus to Bailong elevator — Yuanjiajie — shuttle bus again to Tianzi Mountain — Cablecar down. Wechat green healthy code and mask are required when you enter the park.

Fantastic scenery, with thousands of quartzarenite pinnacles topped by vegetation. The ticket - around 35 euros if I remember correctly, except for the cable cars - is valid for four days, but you can visit it comfortably in 2. Important turnout around the points reachable by bus (included in the price) and cable cars. Paths (mostly stairs... tiring, especially downhill for us) traveled in almost complete solitude. Unforgettable.

Without a doubt one of the most beautiful natural phenomena I have ever seen! But be aware that this park is also used as one of the largest tourist traps I have ever seen.
We had booked a 2-day tour and everything seemed to go smoothly. We drove into the park and, accompanied by a very noisy guide, we visited all the highlights of the Avatar tour. At the end of the first day, however, it became clear to us that there was much more going on than just the visit to the park... During the return drive, the guide started to show us day 2 and where we were going and that it was super important that we spent as much money there as possible, otherwise she would not earn anything from this trip and we might have problems with the local residents...
So day 2… So we did not drive to the park but to a remote hall where they sold all types of jade jewelry. To be honest, the hall was impressively constructed and everything was very professional, but you soon got the feeling that this was one big scam. After this stay (about 3 hours) we were taken to a market again and then drove back to the park after lunch... FYI, this was not only set up by our organization but by a large number of organizations. I estimate that there were about 100 buses parked at the hall/makt...
Bottom line, the park is great, but don't be talked into taking a guided tour, also check the weather forecast carefully (it can be very foggy with limited visibility) and don't go on weekends/public holidays, then there will be a lot too busy!

Hi travelers, I have few question for you. Of course I want to trip everywhere. So let's start - what do you think? When (what month or season) do the least tourists come here? which is the best time to trip to Zhangjiajie, here?
Last question is, How many dollars do we need to go with? please answer me. Thank you for your advice :)

Any time of the year is good to travel as the sceneries varies according to each season; so your experience cannot be compared with another. However I travelled in summer. This tour can be done by yourself at a very economical rate, however you can get guidance from a local tour guide. I suggest you do that, to save time and money. I got help from “Zhangjiajie Kangtai” they are really good service providers

We had a private tour at zjj, there is much to see and not enough time. There were very few western tourists, mostly chinese tourist. We got most of our information from chinahighlights looking up zjj national park. They have the best written information about zjj, what to see, how to allocate time, tips on avoiding crowds, how to get there, best time to visit where to stay and eat ( see my reviews), entry fees, attraction fees. Have a great time.

Is it possible to buy the tickets for Zhangjiajie National Forest Park - in advance - from your hotel? Do you need to provide your original passport to buy the tickets from hotel?
Written 24 August 2019
Maybe possible, but most likely not easy. It is easy at the gate to get tickets, and showing a passport is necessary for the purchase. We bought our ticket a little later on the first day, as it soon gets quieter after the first rush and there are plenty of easy destinations so as not to feel that the day is wasted.

If I have limited time, would you recommend visiting the Tianmen mountain near Zhangjiajie town OR the Avatar mountains in Wulingyuan area? Which is more spectacular?
Written 22 July 2019
Oh... I can not decide because both are fabulous! Both have different views. Avatar mountains are unique and never see any other mountains. Tianmen mountain has a glass walkway, open-air chairlift, longest cable car, Heaven's door and 99 steps. You decide!
Enjoy at Zhangjijie National Park!
