- pollyd2Winmalee, Australia23 contributionsLovely Afternoon TastingHad a lovely time at Chateau Tanunda. Vickie was a wealth of knowledge - not only related to the wine but also the history of this beautiful estate. We were very taken with her enthusiasm and love for Chateau Tanunda. All the staff were helpful and welcoming, and we particularly loved that cash was an accepted form of payment. Thank you for a wonderful experience.Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 24 November 2023
- DSwetnamLexington, Kentucky11 contributionsCan’t miss!If you’re only going to go to one winery in Barrosa, this is the one! They don’t call it Icon of the Barrosa for nothing. I’ve been to wineries throughout Napa and the central coast in California and in other states. I’d rank Chateau Tanunda right alongside the best of those. The grounds are beautiful and the wines were all very enjoyable. Larry took care of us during our tasting and did an exceptional job. He was personable and full of relevant information. Don’t miss this one!Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 3 March 2024
- ArghONaughtMelbourne, Australia144 contributionsExcellent!A marvellous building and complex with a very luxe tasting room. Our hostess Sharon was totally engaging and while wine preferences are personal their shiraz hit our mark with solid bulls eyes. The basic tasting fee was more than just value for money. Parking can be confusing - there is a cellar door lot with stairs down to the entry on each end, and also space behind the building on the 'cellar door floor level'. I would call it one of if not the best of the barossa cellar doors. Ticked every box for this wine junky who normally prefers McLaren Vale.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 March 2024
- Jessie_192Bateau Bay, Australia69 contributionsPlease include this in your visit!!Please include Chateau Tanunda on your visit to the Barossa! We popped in and were fortunate to be seated for a tasting, after a wander through the cellar door. Larry was a wonderful host, informative and professional, very friendly. The wines were incredible, we could have purchased most of them but the Grenache in particular was gorgeous. Make time for a wander through the grounds, it’s very special.Hi Jessie_192, Such kind words, we love it! Larry was chuffed and great to hear we have gained another member of our Grenache fan club!. We thank you and hope to see you back again soon here or at our Sydney Cellar Door in the Rocks. Don’t take your 97 year old aunt to wine tasting at Chateau Tanunda. We observed how difficult the many steps and cobblestones are to negotiate. Geared towards fit international tourists, the set up for paid wine-tasting is elaborate and expensive: those having free wine tasting get short shrift.

We are very consistent consumers of the Grand Barossa Riesling. A beautiful property but a disappointing experience. While lovely wine, the service was extremely lacklustre & lacking any sort of energy & enthusiasm. The cost of tasting was $20 each and like most wineries the cost didn’t come off your end wine purchase. As a result we left disappointed and empty handed. The experience wasn’t worth the $20. While we’ll continue to purchase the wine we won’t at cellar door prices nor would we recommend anyone doing the tasting experience. Visit the property to ‘tick the box’ as it really is a lovely property and the birthplace of the Barossa wine industry….but that’s it.

We walked to Chateau Tanunda today from our accommodation in the hope of a tasting then a bottle of wine and a platter in the beautiful sunshine. When we walked in the man behind the counter looked up and then totally ignored us. A few seconds later some other people walked in and past us and he proceeded to serve them! Finally he came over to us and I asked if we could do the $10 tasting. He said they were far too busy to do tastings (even though it was a Monday and very quiet). I then asked if we could order a glass of wine. He said that we could but then walked away to serve someone else. We were totally taken aback and ended up leaving a few minutes later when he didn’t return. We had read such great reviews for this winery but will not be returning and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. So disappointing!

Dear lmalouf,
Unfortunately we had a very large group booking that day and technically we are closed to private tastings. However, we will always try and accommodate and do our best but, without an appointment especially on a busy day we may not be able to always accommodate everyone. To avoid disappointment it is best to book online, call or send us an email. We are looking forward to welcoming you again in the future
Cheers,

Very impressed with the stunning winery and beautiful gardens BUT we were extremely disappointed with the wine tasting experience. We (a couple) decided to try the wine tasting and we were told it was $10. If we decided to purchase any wine the $10 would not be charged. It was a sit at table tasting. The staff were friendly but it took forever to get through our wine tasting as the staff were also serving other wine tasting customers plus serving at the counter. The wines were good so decided to purchase a bottle for $25. But it was going to cost us $35 due to the fact that it was $10 each to taste. ($20 for a couple). So we purchased 2 bottles for $50. Due to taking so long to finish the tasting, we missed out on visiting other wineries in the Barossa Valley before they shut for the day. If only I had read some of the other negative reviews, we would not have bothered to do the wine tasting. It is highly recommended to see the stunning historic buildings, gardens and beautiful views of the surrounding vineyards and Barossa ranges. BUT not recommending the wine tasting.

My daughter booked us in for this activity and we sat at a tasting counter and tasted numerous wines and aperitifs. It was well managed by a lady with a sound knowledge of wines, good value for money and a pleasant way to spend an hour or two.
Another couple from interstate joined us and added to the session with great humour and conversation.

Being inclement weather, we parked in the visitors carpark and made a dash to the cellar door. Once inside, we were pleased to look around the large tasting room at the historic photographs, the barrels and end up seated beneath a heater, ready for a tasting.
The cellar room staff were friendly, knowledgeable, able to answer any query and happy to find other wines which they thought we might enjoy (and we did). At no time did we feel rushed and it quite likely we could have spent several hours in wine tasting but fortunately purchasing decisions were finally made and, during a break in the rain, we carefully carried our purchases back to the car.
On another visit, when the weather is warmer and not raining, we'd like to return to go on a tour of the establishment.

My sister and I dropped in to have a look and ended up having a fantastic time. After exploring the grounds, we entered the Chateau and was greeted by Bec. She explained a brief history of the chateau and then showed us where to view the history via wall art. Afterwards we decided to do some wine tasting and she was excellent! She answered all our questions (on the history of the chateau, about the wine making process, wine questions in general etc.). She was truly wonderful - laughing with us and providing absolutely outstanding customer service. Thank you Chateau Tanunda, we will be back.

Decided to do their $10 tasting as their grounds are amazing! Terrible service, told us nothing about the wines, never asked us what we thought or gave us better suggestions. Wine was disgusting, we threw a lot of it out!
Wine club looks like a complete rip off!
Even as we paid, still no one asked us what we thought or did we want to buy any! I’ve bought at least a doz bottles at every winery this week we have visited. They judged us before we even sat down! Completely disappointed!

Visited Chateau Tanunda on a Saturday afternoon for the Rare & Fine Wines Tasting Flight (private tasting) and it was fantastic! We were looked after by Sharon, who gave us a great overview of the wines and the differences between them. She also offered a very interesting history of the building, the grounds and the region in general, on top of an insight into the owner, the industry and the locals. She was wonderful as a host! Afterwards, we bought a couple of bottles and drank one by the fireplace. Probably the best wine tasting and winery visit I've ever done and will definitely be coming back one day.

Wonderful old building steeped in history and with beautiful gardens. From the moment we walked in it was welcoming. We were encouraged to walk around and look at the old pictures, the wine barrels and the set up. We did the discovery tasting with Mitch who was awesome, knowledgeable and friendly. Took a couple of bottles home with us!
Great to see a family run business keeping the tradition going.

Do you charge more for large groups? If there are 15-20 persons, how much would you charge per person for such a group?
Written 6 August 2019
Hi. When we went it was a set price but there was only 3 of us. I am sure you could get a better price if you contacted them. The wine tasting was free for a few wines but the winery is beautiful if you just wanted to wander
