Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Ararat is a prosperous country town with a rich history based on the Great Australian Gold Rush and its contribution to social institutions. Ararat is a station for The Overland which has been a valued contribution to the railway link between Melbourne and Adelaide for many years. One of the most interesting institutions is the former mental hospital for the criminally insane. The former hospital is open for the historic institutional inspection and is quite fascinating. The Visitor Information Center is a valued organization for the historic town and the Grampians, a rugged mountainous region.

Art and information, a great combination to find out places of interest and local.art. One of the staff wven explained the difficulty of dressing a manikin, needing to pad up in some areas to replicate the changing figures.

We find it helpful to talk to local people who staff these places, They are always very knowledgeable about the area and offer good suggestions about what to see and do while in the area.

The Ararat Visitors Info Centre is at the railway station, super convenient for train travellers (me, on a day trip from Melbourne) and motorists (carpark right in front).
The staff member was helpful although I only needed a town map, having done all my other homework online.
However, having enjoyed my few hours in Ararat, as I waited for the train I popped back for info on what else is in the region for a possible longer future visit. All the booklets, pamphlets, etc, and the souvenir items, were well laid out and not squished together so that browsing was very comfortable.
There are toilets there, nice and clean, for use before you board the train again (or get back to your car).
The availability of coffee would have been a bonus.

That many of us book online probably means fewer call in at visitor information centres.

Not sure why TA has as its main picture the Ararat town hall as the centre is at the railway station.

It's very well organised with a wealth of maps and brochures.

I like Ararat, as it has (depending on direction) up to five V/Line trains a day plus V/Line coach connections to Warrnambool (three days a week), Horsham and Nhill (better than daily) and Ouyen (six days a week.) There are quite a few attractions within walking distance of the station such as J Ward and various other museums plus the centre of prayer, historic Immaculate Conception Church.

Well done to the staff at the visitor info centre.

We stopped here with a few questions and left with a mine of information. Grant, the volunteer was amazing. We learned about the area and more. Ask him about why neighbouring Moyston claims to be the original inspiration for footy. Or about the lovely free camp outside of town. Worth stopping here.

We arrived in Ararat from Halls Gap not knowing much about the place as the chap at Halls Gap was not very helpful. It was a different story here the young lady was extremely helpful not just about Ararat but gave us some ideas for day drives in the area. We have been to many Information Centres all over Australia but this would have to be one of the best.

When you're on the road, the towns information centre is usually your 1st port of call to get low down on the town.... Symbolised by a giant blue 'i', hence why we call the The Big 'I'. The Ararat info centre is one of the most helpful ones in Australia. What an awesome team... Thanks for all your help.
