Was given a good 2 hours tour of a prison facility that demonstrated the medical understanding of mental illness of the time - frightening. Combined with the tour of the Aradale mental hospital a great day.

My wife and i were travelling from Dunkeld back to Melbourne but we detoured - on the advice of a number of friends- to Ararat to visit the J Ward Museum (former Mental Asylum for the criminally insane and which closed in 2001) .
Ian our tour guide was fantastic and very informative! I highly recommend everyone to visit and take a tour of this beautiful old gaol! The history and the stories behind the prisoners are fascinating! 10/10

Hey Ozee, They are about 10m drive from one another. You should allow about 1-2 hrs for J Ward and 3-4 hours for Aradale. you can get tickets from the Information Center in town and they will provide a map.
