We took bus #8 to Veyrier-Douane where we walked over to France, passing the customs control who didn’t even look at us or check passport. At the base of Mont Salève, we realized that the “sporty” trail was more like climbing the face of a mountain and required time, energy and water, none of which we had much of at the time. So we went up on the cable car which took us to an altitude of 3690 feet in less than 5 minutes. At the top, we hiked the less intense “family” trail through woodlands, paragliding slope, monastery, observation area, cows, and were wowed by the panoramic sweep of the Valley of the Arve, with Geneva and Mont Blanc in the background. After 2 hours breathing in the fresh French-Switzerland air and taking in the awesome views, we headed back down in the cable car to bus back to Geneva. Worth the hike.

I went on a Sunday and the cable car wasn't available. It's openingtimes are very limited. Google on: telepherique-du-saleve. Their website gives you a monthly calendar. Climbing the mountain by foot is also impossible since it is under construction for 30 years. They started in 2003 and lasts till 2033 by their prediction.

Cable car is closed for refurbishment. Just for information and to save a wasted trip as there was nothing shown on the website to say this. Will have to come back in the new year!

With clear skies you'll have a great view over the Geneva region. In the winter, you will most likely only be able to see a sea of clouds (being above that in the sun is great too). You can walk up the mountain if you're in good shape. Be sure to use proper footwear, this remains a mountain! Free walking tours take place every Sunday at 10am from Veyrier douane (at the terminus of bus 8).

Visited here as a training telepherique with kids. For this it is small enough but for seeing over Geneva this little mt. is just big enough. A little hard to find a way to get there without a car from Geneva (Mont Saleve is in France...)
