We visited Þjórsárdalur after getting sick of dealing with the crowds mobbing the more we’ll known bits of the Golden Circle. There seem to be several ways to get to Gjáin. We came in via short hike from Stöng (a worthwhile visit by itself). We...More

One of my favorite stops on our tour around Iceland. To get there you have to drive down a bumpy road that is pretty much nothing but empty rock and old lava fields. Then you reach this place and its a beautiful oasis to greet...More

Loved this place! We had a gorgeous day and I know that certainly helped with its presentation. As we parked and peaked over the edge - it really was a magical feeling! It is like a haven in and among the cliffs. Water flowing from...More

Easy to find but bumpy to get to. Beautiful little valley and very easy hike. We had the place to ourselves most morning. Don't rush, bring some sandwiches and enjoy the moment!

It's quite a bumpy drive down a dirt track that barely qualifies as a road. As a result, it is not recommended to attempt this in a vehicle without 4x4. The reward for making it to the end is a really lovely small valley with...More

Have you ever been to Rivendell from Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings? I did! Gjáin is a magical place, not yet well known, so you can wander without trouble. I never belived so harsh Icelandic weather can allow such beautiful valley to emerge. Do...More

Wow, this is reallly a stunnig place! Beautiful. You have to drive a gravel road (must have a 4x4) to get here. When you arrive and look down, you wil understand the drive was really worth it. It is as from a fairy tail, magical....More

The road to Gjain is extremely rough. We had a lighter 4x4 vehicle and even we had a hard time. Probably one of the worst non-F roads we encountered. That being said, it's not illegal to try to take a 2 wheel drive vehicle... More

There aren't any 4x4 signs for the road to Haifoss but there are for Gjain. In my opinion, a 4x4 would be a good idea for both drives. The road to haifoss has a ton of very large potholes and large rocks to clear. If its... More
