Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Breathtaking tomb, fascinating amounts of detail, all in homage to one of the great minds of Mexican music and culture. The vibrantly coloured tiles leading to the great sombrero nearly sing to you, each color band being inscribed with the name of a song from this artist’s extensive catalogue. The cross-shaped tiling at the top of the sombrero, the space for the artist’s mother, and the curvature of the monument—designed to resemble the road from Guanajuato to Dolores Hidalgo—all make this a picturesque and worthwhile stop.

This is a little bit out of the way from the town centre of Dolores Hidalgo—don’t expect to walk, and do arrange transportation. But do make a point of venturing over, whether by taxi or tour, because it is worth the short trip.

Stopped at cemetery before Delores Hidalgo to visit the grave and monument to Jose Alfredo Jimenez, 1926-1973, a great composer and famous signer. This is another tourist attraction. Monument made to look like mouth and tongue. Saying inscribed La Vida no vale nada means Life is Worthless or Life Means Nothing. Part of our tour through Transportes Turisticos de Guanajuato.

The mausoleum is found just outside Dolores Hidalgo in the Panteón Municipal to honor the life of Jose Alfredo Jimenez, known as the ‘Father of modern mariachi’ and sometimes said to be the Bob Dylan of Mexico (not sure I agree with that later connection).

The mausoleum is in its fifth iteration, getting larger and more intricate each time. A very colorful mosaic band, a bit like a snake with a tail but, in actuality, a representation of a colorful Mexican ‘serape’ shawl with fringes, leads you to the mouth of this famous singer. Inside the mouth, covered by a large sombrero, are bubbles, each representing one of the many songs (up to 1,000 rancheras = rural folk songs) written by Jimenez. Also inside the mouth, are the words: ‘La vida no vale nada (‘Life is worth nothing), this song written as a lament on the state of life and death in Guanajuato, just before the death of his brother. The size of the bubbles matches how famous each song was. The largest bubble is for his song ‘El Rey’ (The King).

The mosaic is inlaid with titles of his most well-known songs. A lot of thoughts went into creating this very large curvy mausoleum. Even though you may not know much about this singer (like me), you have to appreciate the dedication, love, and passion Mexicans have for this singer/writer who died at the tender age of 47 of cirrhosis (or complications) of the liver! So many travelers are ego-centric as they think the subject seen/visited as to pertain to them/their knowledge? Mysteries and novelties are part of life. Embrace them…

Known as the Mexican Elvis, the mausoleo for Jose is a uniquely colourful and brash celebration of his life.
Don’t miss all the engravings of the various song names.
Essential if you are visiting Dolores Hidalgo.

I had no idea who this person was, and thought that his gravesite memorial was not only extremely tacky, but boring to boot.

This small museum to a legendary Mexican performer is just off the plaza. Wonderfully done, the display takes you from start to finish, describing the extraordinary life of a cherished musician and the rapid extinction of a white hot flame. We see his family and his professional time and the interplay between them. It was really quite interesting and well worth your time.

This is the burial spot for one of Mexico's most revered and prolific singer/songwriters. Having written more than 1,000 songs, his work is still in demand today. Current celebrities have produced many of his songs including the talented Selena. Unfortunately Jimenez liked the "juice of the agave" too much and succumbed at an early age (in his forties) to schirrosis of the liver. He is interred here in his birthplace of Dolores Hidalgo.

A must visit if you visit Dolores Hidalgo, this mausoleum stands out in the pantheon at first glance, it is enormous, it is shaped like a hat with a zarape and it is made of colored mosaics, where each segment has a color and has each of the songs of José Alfredo Jiménez. Entering the pantheon there are people who offer you hats and serapes for rent so that you can take a photo. It is worth having a guide explain everything related to the tomb and the history of José Alfredo, this in exchange for a tip at the end. the explanation.
