Destination Janitzio is in need of a facelift to take advantage of this great location, the boats that take you there could also use some renovation. Janitzio offers many shops , restaurants that share the same basic menu, it is inexpensive, the boat ride is about $3.00 USD per person the restaurant most are in the low end. It does... More

The launch to the island costs approximately $3.25 (depending on exchange rate) - takes about 30 minutes & as you approach the island, the Butterfly Net fisherman will paddle out & put on a display for you. Tip is expected!! The island has few flat surfaces - you are almost always climbing or descending stairs - wear comfy shoes. Climb... More

The town is located atop a hill and have a great view. Janitzio can only be reached by boats which run regularly back and forth from about 7:30 am to 6 pm, accessible from Pátzcuaro's pier. You have local boats that you can hire to take visitors and tourist to different parts of the lake. Also this town is know... More

Janitzio is an island off of Patzcuaro in the estate of Michoacán. It's a quaint and very "Mexican" place filled with local merchants whose main income is fishing and tourism. Very friendly and welcoming natives live there. May seem dirty (littered) but one must keep in mind that it is a very popular national and international destination - still an... More

Beautiful place with good food, a lot of commerce with cheap and beautiful artesanias, and an astonishing view of the surroundings. Cemetery visit is a must, especially at the Night of The Dead. A "tirolesa" ride takes amazing 90 seconds to take you to another island, from where you go back to Janitzio in a boat, safe and quick. Totally... More

Has anyone traveled to this island on the Day of the dead celebration? Any advice? tips? I would really like to hear anyone's input. Also, safety of the area during that time.

We went by collectivo from Patzcuaro to the muelle (dock) and took a public boat to the island. We went on a Saturday and the boat was full of locals and Mexican tourists, with a band of 4 musicians, creating a fun atmosphere. On the trip over we passed the local fishermen with their butterfly Nets, who approach the boat... More

So my family is from near this area and when I went to visit them, I visited this place and it is so pretty and the monument it so large. However the stairs going the whole way up are very tiring. It is worth every step. Such beauty and excellence is rarely found in nature. When I went here I... More

With easy access from Patzcuaro, this island is an enchanting day trip. Lots of shops and eateries, interesting church usually bedecked with lots of flowers, and huge statue of Morelos.
