Ignore the people yelling at you on the road and the people in the dive shop that say you have to pay a tour operator. We snorkeled twice and didn't use one either time. Early or late in the day is best for less people. Enjoyed seeing turtles and a sting ray in the grassy areas and lots of fish... More

We took a taxi from the resort to the beach. Don't bother to pay someone to snorkel with the turtles because you can do it for free. The beach is public. We saw huge turtles. The kids had a blast. It was quite the experience.

We've stayed here about 5 times and the other 3 all since 2005. We are never disappointed and it feels like we return "home"! Great staff including the cleaning ladies who work hard! Great resort, food, room, etc. I would like the front desk of these 4 resorts be able to identify return customers when we check in for a... More

I felt a very long review with pics under this heading. Great for couples, middle aged adults, those seeking a quiet relaxed Mexican holiday. 7th visit there Nov 2016

Drive all the way into the Akumal dive shop to park and rent your snorkel gear and then get in the water and find the sea turtles!

The beach itself is nice, but it seems the beach has been discovered. When we arrived at 9am we had the beach to ourselves. By 1:00 we were surrounded by hundreds of people. Blanket to blanket. People stepping over us to get to the water. Was not relaxing at all. If you want to relax not the place. If you... More

The beaches in Akumal are weedy and very rocky. I wouldn't come back for this reason. Having said that and only 30 minutes away in Playa del Carmen I loved the beaches.

Yes the guides are very friendly and do inform you of the regulations. However they tell you that you must always wear a life vest and pay $50usd pp for a tour guide to swim out to where the turtles are. If you walk further along the beach (right side) where the resorts are, you are free to snorkel at... More
