Avoid the "coastal ranger" or whatever they call themselves. I wish I would have read this page before going in. People will try to convince you that there's an area which is free to swim and the area outside is federal area where you need to pay a tour guide to visit. This is completely FALSE! Do not pay for... More

We drove in and parked across from the dive shop. Walked in with tour groups at the dive shop. The beach was hot but the water was cool and refreshing. We started seeing turtles right away. Very easy activity and well worth the time.

We were advised by our NEXUS agent that this would be a great tour for our family (parents, kids age 3,5,8). They said that the depths are only 4 ft. They describe this as a conservation areas, and instructed us to not use sunscreen, and there are shirts you can purchase to protect your skin if needed. This was a... More

They will all approach you as you enter the beach, listen to what they say about the regulations but do not be conned into paying $50usd pp for a guide. If you walk a minute or so further along the beach (towards right side) in front of the hotels, you are free to swim at your own will. We hired... More

We made our own way here by taxi and it was well worth it! We had a private guide who took three of us to see turtles... we all had our own snorkelling stuff but they would've kitted us out otherwise...they just provided us with a life vest We saw about 5 turtles a stingray and many fish and took... I decided to swim with the turtles without renting a guide or going on a tour. It's right there in the bay, you can see the groups out there. They made me go rent a life jacket, OK. Then I had my face in the water watching 2 big beautiful turtle eating grass and some guide taps me on the... More

We saw so many turtles and got some fantastic photos - definitely take an underwater camera/gopro if you've got one, there's so much to see! Would do again if I could. Akumal is a beautiful town as well. The guides were incredibly informative, I learnt heaps while having the best time.

It was REALLY WORTHY to do! It was my first experience with snorkeling, but no problems at all. The territory for swimming alone is limited and there are no turtles. So book a guide, they provide life vest and snorkeling equipment. It took a bit more than 1 hour, we saw any turtles (they are amazing!!!), reef with corals and... More
