- TandTSwitzerlandZurich, Switzerland1,179 contributionsMagical placeLast time I was in Uxmal there were still restrictions due to Covid, so there were very few tourists and the place was magical due to this quiet environment. This time I was afraid of seeing too many people, but I was completely wrong because there were also very few people and the place was very quiet. You can walk in peace and take your time to enjoy the ruins. It is a magical pace, very mystic. For me one of the best ruins and definitely a highlight.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 3 November 2023

- akatsnelsonBrooklyn, New York10 contributionsBus info for those who want to take a bus to uxmalBeautiful archeological site, very few tourists. As amazing as chichen itza. Kids loved our tour guide Juan, the tour cost 1000 pesos and lasted 1.5-2 hours. We took the Sur bus from Campeche, it runs 5 times a day from Sur station we took the 2 pm bus got into uxmal at 5.45. There is no town so bring snacks and alcohol as you will be eating at the hotel. Hotel resort maya uxmal was wonderful, cheap, huge balconies with a beautiful view of the jungle, a wonderful pool, a good not overpriced restaurant, and in the morning you can walk straight to archeological site through a path through the jungle. Afterwards swam and caught the same sur bus to Merida at 5.45.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 7 January 2024
- HappyTrailsCharlottesville, Virginia108 contributionsA Very Full DayIf you are ardently interested in the archaeological sites near Merida, you won’t want to miss all that the Uxmal area offers. We made arrangements with Tour like a Local out of Merida. Andrej vasko was perfect. A gentleman, an excellent driver, knowledgeable to win praise from my husband, picked us up early so we could see all in one day, and a trained archaeologist.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 February 2024
- BerthakiArequipa, Peru265 contributionsThe best of Yucatán archaeologyBy far the best archaeological complex in Yucatán. The reception area has several facilities like inexpensive shops with books and handicrafts, clean restrooms, and good food kiosks. The archaeological site begins with the beautiful great pyramid with it's characteristic oval shape that makes it different from other sites. The style you see here is purely Puuc. Other monuments like the nunnery square, the governor's palace with it's cute double headed jaguar throne, and the palomar are unique. When we went, the cemetery area was closed but we could observe the reconstruction of a sunken square the archaeologists are doing now. There're not so much visitors so you can enjoy the site without crowds.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 26 February 2024
- vagabond_dreamsAlberta, Canada367 contributionsWorth the drive from Merida! We enjoyed our visit to Uxmal - it's well worth the drive from Merida. We arrived at about 9 am and the tour groups started arriving at about 10:30; definitely try to get there before the tours as it's a much nicer visit when there are fewer people around. We spent about 2 hours there in total. We did not hire a guide, as I had printed off a map and detailed information from the internet - recommend either doing this or hiring a guide as the English signage on site is quite brief. Costs at the time we visited in February 2024 were 116 mxn for parking, 95 mxn entry fee, and 465 mxn government fee. Afterwards we drove 10 minutes down the road to the town of Santa Elena and had a nice lunch at the Pickled Onion (which is also a B&B if you're looking for overnight accommodations).Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 March 2024
- vanherbruggen36 contributionsA great experience in Uxmal with the best guide ever...My visit to the Uxmal archaeological site was spectacular. This ancient Mayan city, with its well-preserved structures and stunning architecture, truly offers a glimpse into a fascinating past. The intricate details of the Pyramid of the Magician left me in awe of the craftsmanship and ingenuity of the Mayan civilization. A significant added value of the tour was our guide. His extensive knowledge and passion for Mayan history brought the ruins to life. He provided detailed explanations of the various structures and their historical significance, which greatly enriched our experience. His enthusiasm was contagious, making the tour both educational and enjoyable... 80 years with over 50 years of experience and the dynamics of never ending youth... Fantastic! Uxmal is a must-see for anyone interested in history and ancient civilizations.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 9 July 2024

Different to other Mayan sites, but some design features similar. So much of the site yet to be uncovered. We travelled to these amazing Mayan ruins on the public bus from Mérida. It was a straightforward experience, but you need to either allow plenty time, or *buy your bus ticket the day before*. Normally you can buy your ticket aboard a second class bus, but because the first and second class terminals at Mérida are merged at the moment, you have to buy in advance - and that can easily mean a 30 minute queue.
We rocked up at 8.45 for the nine o'clock bus, joined the queue, then went away after not moving for ten minutes. We came back the next day at 8.20, queue was only ten mins, but the 9 o'clock bus was sold out so we had to wait until 10.40.
The morale of the story is try to buy the day before, I think. Coming back, it's queue and hope. We joined a queue of about 20 people waiting for the 3pm bus, and there were no seats when it arrived. The driver let everybody on, but we were filling the aisle and entranceway! Better than waiting two hours for the next bus though.
As for the ruins - they are amazing. Worth every moment of frustration with busses!

We hired an eco-tourism vendor for this trip. We based ourselves in Merida and met with a close friend to take a city tour. We then used Ecoturismo Yucatan to take a few trips outside of Merida - just day trips. This tour company is great, and you can contact them at info@ecoyuc.com.
We had Hugo and Juan as guide and driver respectively. They both spoke English fluently. Hugo was an encyclopedia of knowledge of Mayan culture and particularly this area.
This Mayan ruin is amazing, and we've seen Tulum and Chichen Itza and we think this one is more impressive. The sheer size of the place and ability to get close to the artifacts was amazing.
Both Tulum and Chichen Itza are becoming over commercialized and Uxmal is not widely known but much more impressive.
We spent two hours walking the grounds, taking pictures and listening to Hugo explain what we were seeing. It's a fabulous tour but you do need a tour guide.
There is an admission cost of $880 pesos for two of us which is about $45USD or so. It's well worth it and the funds go into the preservation and restoration.
Quite impressive.

The site is huge and well conserved meaning you can see lot of details. I visited Uxmal first time in 2018. At that time the entrance was around 230 pesos. Now we are in 2020 and entrence is around 430 pesos and some parts of the zone are closed. You cant climb the great pyramid anymore, you cant even get close to it,
neither to another zone behind it as its closed. But of course, they dont indicate it at the entrance. I remember in 2018 I spent walking around almost three hours and now we were done in one hour, as it offers limited circuit "due to covid", which doesnt make any sense as its huge open air zone and the concentration of people is not very high. If you are coming by car be ready to pay another 80 pesos for parking. The people offering the services in Uxmal are deformed by tourism as they see you just as a walking wallet. I recommend visiting less known archeological zones (Mayapan is opened, sites on Ruta Puuc were closed). They are more magical, you will be there almost alone, entrence is 40-60 pesos, no parking fee and people are not screwing you just because you are a foreigner. I wonder what would Mexicans said if prices of historical sites were doubled for them in Europe just for being a third country national.

We were a group of four, and hired Pedro at their front desk for a private tour of about 90 minutes. We then got to roam free. The upcharge was about $40 for the group, and it added to our experience immensely. Pedro is partly of Mayan descent, he knew the site, the history and architecture, the symbols and culture, and the natural setting. We had limited Spanish in our group, so we appreciated that his English was quite good. The site itself is great. Not only do you get to see the one large temple, but then (spoiler alert) you go around/behind and find more...and then more. Bring the usual hat, sunscreen and water especially if its hot, and a snack if you'll be taking your time. Bummer that the indoor museum happened to be closed for lunch (really?) right when we returned to the lobby area. So we missed out on whatever it had to offer. Our next day was at Gran Museo del Mundo Maya, so we got plenty on our trip...but would have liked to see inside this one at Uxmal too. We had a nice lunch several minutes back towards Merida at Ppapp Hol Chac de Uxmal.

This is a lovely Mayan ruin site. It costs about $25 and is well worth it. No line to get in. I took a ADO bus from Merida, about 1.15 hours, and they drop you off close to the entrance of the ruins. The archaeologists have done an excellent job; these ruins are beautiful. There are a few people, and I don't recall any vendors. Just walk in and around the ruins, which is encouraged. You really get a feel for the size of the Mayan people. Tourists here are happy, relaxed; this is a delightful way to spend 2 or 3 hours.

On the recommendation of others I decided to visit here rather than Chichen Itza. I'm very pleased I did. I got an ADO here from Merida which was easy and convenient (I arrived at 8:30 but the 9 bus was sold out so had to go for 10:30). The salesperson wrote down the return times for me without asking and there lots of others doing the same so it was hard to miss. That said, the ruins were really quite quiet, even in peak January times. The sun beat down on me but I was able to thoroughly enjoy the ruins. The Puuc architecture is really amazing with a lot of the fine stucco preserved (presumably having been stuck back up). The signage is good and with my guide book I was able to guide myself around and take it all in. It's the most expensive place I visited but absolutely worth it.

With so many sites to choose from, it might be easy to skip Uxmal....but please don’t. It is a wonderful site and you can STILL climb some of the pyramids, although not the main one. It is large, with lots to see. The architecture is extraordinary. We returned for the sound and light show and although we didn’t understand the Spanish, we understood the story and loved seeing the site at night.

Uxmal is located 80km from Merida.
Although one can get here independently often it is seen as part of a larger tour visiting a Hacienda, Uxmal and a cenote/chocolate museum.
I initially wondered whether Uxmal was worth visiting given the nearby Chichen Itza. At the time of writing I have visited both and to be honest I’m not sure which one I liked more. Although Chichen Itza is a larger site with more quantity, I actual feel Uxmal probably had better quality. It’s Casa Del Adivino for example is actually 10m taller than Chichens Itza El Castillo. The Palacio del Gobernador has 100m of facade. It’s all very impressive. However, the most enjoyable element of Uxmal is the fact it sees a fraction of the tourists of Chichen Itza and they don’t allow vendors onto the site so you can really enjoy it without being harassed.
The entry fee was 496 mexican peso. I felt this was a bit steep. At the time of writing you navigate it in a one way direction through a designated roped of path. You cannot climb on the ruins. It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. As with most archeological sites, adding an guide can help contextualise the ruins and improve the experience.
It was very hot when we visited so bring plenty of water and sunscreen. Consider stopping at a cenote on your way back to Merida.
Overall a great site to visit even for those who may have already seen a lot of ruins in mexico.

A more peaceful must visit archaeological site, about an hour bus ride from Merida. It has many trees offering shades if visiting during summertime. Nice friendly people. There are stores at the entrance that sell souvenirs etc but none of those pushy vendors. You need about 1-2 hours to see the whole site. Across there is a chocolate house factory which you can visit while waiting for the bus.
They did not allow backpacks inside the site, not even a medium sized bag. They can keep it for you at no fee. Just be aware. Wear comfortable shoes. The steps are tricky -narrow and steep.

A beeeeautiful site with a lot of nature and so natural shade from the heating sun. Early in the morning there were very few people so we had the place almost exclusively to ourselves. Possible to do the tour in many different languages! If I had to choose between Uxmal and Chichen Itzá, I would choose Uxmal.

Buenas estimados, Espero anden bien.
Diego O.

Hi, is there a way to reserve an English tour at the Archaeological Zone of Uxmal?
Written 5 October 2020
Really not sure about advanced booking. there were English speaking guides at the entrance, but I haven't got a clue as to how good they are. We just strolled around and soaked it up. They gave us a bit of a map at the entrance.
If you can manage the climb up to one of the higher points, look out into the jungle. You can see other ziggurats that they haven't cleared yet.
its a truly impressive set of ruins
