    The highlight of Valladolid!
Wow!!! What a blessing to be able to visit La Casa de los Venados! The collection of folk art here is incredible to view, especially in the context of someone’s private home decor! Massive thanks to our awesome guide for the tour - friendly, knowledgeable and patient with all our questions and constant stopping for photos!! We could have spent hours exploring every piece on display, absolutely our highlight in Valladolid!

Quirky, interesting tour of private art
The Casa is free to enter and tour (donation requested at the end of the tour). It is packed with objects and paintings from a variety of Mexican folk art traditions. Tours are available in Spanish or English. A tour leaves the front door on each hour from 10am to 4pm and lasts an hour. Well worth a visit.

    A must see in Valladolid
Totally unexpected tour. Had no expectations prior. Folk art.... Ok. Not really my thing but it was the best surprise for our 4 days in Valladolid. Not a business. All by donation, going to great causes. The owners story, his journey of collecting all these pieces, over 3000! Actually mind blowing. We walked past this place quite a few times and you would never know it's there unless you're looking for it. Highly recommend. David, our guide was awesome and John the owner was so gracious in letting people tour his house. Yes this is his personal house and we got to see alot of it along with the art, history and stories. If you visit Valladolid you must see this place. Centrally located right near the town square.

    Best kept secret in Vallodolid
A surprising and fascinating find at the heart of Valladolid. This private house had previously been the mayor’s house but was bought in a derelict state about 20 years ago by the current owner and wife, and restored for his retirement and to house an immense lifetime collection of Mexican folk art, much of exceptional quality. It is still a private home so entry is by joining one of the small guided tours which run five or six times a day. Our guide Miguel was very knowledgable and spoke very good English. We were lucky to arrive on a Sunday when one can see a part of the private section of the house where some of the best works are displayed. No fee, just donations which go to charity. Amazing.

Restored grand home in the center of town
Guided English or Spanish tour of this private home, a restored 16th century Villa, on the central Plaza. 100 pesos suggested donation to local charities, this visit is highly worthwhile. There is a collection of over 3000 pieces from native Mexican art and crafts. The home is still occupied by the 80 year year-old American owner. Tours size is limited with the first tour at 10 AM. Arrive about 10 minutes early.

    DON’T MISS THIS TOUR!
Really a must see for anyone visiting Valladolid. Right close to the central square and they only ask for a $5 US or $100 mxn donation at the end of the tour. The most incredible collection of Mayan folk art in the Yucatan if not the world!

This is a house owned by a couple of old retired Americans who charge people for looking around.
The principle is pretty messed up. They call it a donation which in essence it implies that people aren’t obligated to give.
Just try going without paying... You’ll get a door slamming if you’re lucky...

Not worth the time...

I left Cancun ahead of hurricane Delta and spent 4 days in Valladolid. Thankfully, Casa de los Venados had reopened and I had the opportunity to visit on October 10, 2020. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but boy oh boy will you'll love it once you get inside. It's a beautiful home/museum and well worth your time. My guide told me that they offer tours at 10am, 11:30am and 1pm daily. If you have a large group and want to visit outside of these hours, you can call to see if a guide would be available. The guides are volunteers and tips are appreciated. The admission price to tour the casa is a $100 pesos / $5 US donation (at the time of this post). The collection is mind blowing. FYI, you are on a guided tour and don't just get to roam the collection on your own. It's an impressive collection and I would definitely visit again, there is so much to see.

What a surprise to find such a fabulous collection of art in Valladolid. We first visited in July 2020, and have returned for a second visit this week. The art and the house of Dorianne and John Venator take you to a different time and place in Mexico. It’s the art of the people, albeit done by some of the finest Mexican artists, from whom the works were purchased. The guides were very good. You can get tours in English as well as Spanish. Go early. It was open only from 10am-1pm.

Owners have opened up their home to the public and have on display hundreds of pieces of Mexican folk art that are just wonderful.
Small donation is required to tour the home and proceeds go for their continued efforts of helping the community and other young artists pursuing their passion. The local guides are full of great history and do a great job in explaining the concept of Casa de Los Venados.
Unassuming front door of the building leads into a beautiful home with a gorgeous open air patio and also a beautiful pool.

Great house museum, recently re-opened (Dec. 2020) for very small guided tours of up to 4 people. Covid precautions are in place so everyone stays safe. Amazing collection of Mexican folk art, the owners have great taste and it's really awesome they use their passion (collecting) to raise money for local charities. Donation (not optional) of minimum 100 pesos. Our guide, David, was excellent – took his time with us (1.5 hours) and was an extreme pleasure. Go visit!

Today I visited this beautiful house in Valladolid. It has been one of the highlights of my visit to Mexico this time around. The house/gallery is filled with beautiful, mostly contemporary Mexican art, in a magical setting. The generous owners, an American couple, who have clearly a passion for Mexico, allow visitors to explore their house and collection. The guide who showed us the house today, December 28th at 13:00, was clearly proud of his job and took time to explain and ensure that we enjoy the visit. A 100 Mexican pesos donation is encouraged that is used for community support.

You will find this hidden gem jus a few blocks off the central plaza. We rang the bell and were greeted by a very knowledgeable guide who sanitized us and took our temperature. Then he made sure we understood that there was no admission charge but that we would be requested to make a charitible donation of 100 pesos at the end of the tour.

We quickly agreed feeling that It is very generous of the owners to share their collection with the public and happy to support their chosen charity. That was a good decision. Our guide seemed to know the life story of every artist and art piece represented!

This os a beautiful collection that will truly open your eyes to see the beauty and diversity of the mexican people, their lives and their art. Don’t miss it!

Terrific venue, but the organisation of tours could do with improvement. There's no info anywhere online telling you that there are several tours a day. Why don't the guides even put a sign on the door showing tour times?? As a result people try to get there for 10 a.m. which is the advsertised time. Once the tour starts, the guides close the doors then every time a late arrival rings and rings the bell they stop, go to let them in, explain tour times and sometimes bring them in.

When we started one guide explained the basics of the place then split us into two groups. I was with his colleague David who had stood beside him throughout. Once we split David proceeded to tell us EXACTLY what his pal had just said. What a waste of good touring time.

This was our second visit to this wonderful home / exhibition. We took friends with us and they were also enthralled.

A family home filled with the most impressive collection of traditional Mexican folk-art - one of the largest and best in Mexico. Every square inch features something that will amaze.

The bonus is that it is owned by a Rotarian who donates funds collected from the small entry fee to local charities. A wonderful experience while helping those in need.

Wow! Casa de los Venados is a treasure house of Mexican art — a private home that explodes with the colors and traditions of Mexico. Do not miss this gem. It’s crammed with art — exquisite examples of the "trees of life" and playful skeletons found in Mexican art markets, plus paintings, murals, textiles, ceramics, a room dedicated to Frida Kahlo, and much more. The owners are incredibly generous in allowing you to tour the entire house (at appointed times, with a guide, so be sure to check ahead for hours), and are very active in local charities. Don’t miss the dining room, with chairs featuring the faces of Mexican heroes. Located right off the main square in Valladolid, you could easily visit Casa de los Venados on a day trip to nearby Chichen Itza or the ruins of Ek Balam. The owners say they want to foster a better appreciation of Mexican traditional art. They have certainly done so!
