Soar above a breathtaking landscape, sculpted over time, decorated by nature and enjoyed by generations.Stand on top of Dunstable Downs for a view that will simply take your breath away. These Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) are designated for the quality of their chalk grasslands. As well as two Scheduled Ancient Monuments (Five Knolls and Medieval Rabbit Warrens) there are many other historical features and the site has much to offer you.The chalk grasslands of the Downs have miles of footpaths and several circular walks, a fascinating history and an abundance of plants and wildlife.Dunstable Downs is within the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and the highest point in Bedfordshire. The wind-swept ridge provides ideal conditions for a variety of air sports, especially kite flying. On calmer days it's the ideal site to enjoy the view and a picnic. Please note: Chilterns Gateway Centre is owned by Central Bedfordshire Council and managed by the National Trust.

I needed to get out of the city for a day and this was perfect. I took a long walk on the top of the hills, had some Mr Whippy and just enjoyed the views. Lots of people fly a kite there as well and have proper picnics and it's great if you have kids as well.

Stopped here a couple of weeks ago and had a great walk with my wife down to the Whipsnade Tree Cathedral and around Whipsnade although the pub was shut. The NT centre is good to visit and you can pick up leaflets for various walks. A coffee and pasty there was also very nice. For a cyclist it's best to... More

Love to take the dogs. Especially when the sun is setting. Always an ice cream van up there too for a cheeky treat in the summer till sun down!

I had never heard of Dunstable Downs and visited the centre with an open mind. The centre is located such that it gaives great views across the valley. There are good walks pretty much along the contours so easy going. There also loads of seats at the centre and along the walks. Whilst we were there many picnicers and cyclists... More

Nice, relaxing picnic spot, not much to do but best for kite flying, gliders spotting, drone flying, bring your own picnic, bikes, or just sit and relax/enjoy.

Come here all the time to walk the dog. We both love it! Fantastic views and great for kite flying. Cafe isn't too bad either, although we prefer to picnic. Great way to spend a sunny Sunday.

My first visit to Dunstable Downs was over fifty years ago when a friend’s father brought us over in his Farina Cambridge. Not much has changed; gliders still hover, kites are still flown, people walk their dogs, etc. The only changes are that there are many more people and I can no longer run up and down the hills. Visit... More

Lovely place to visit with beautiful rural views, including a vista over the gliding club. A great place to fly kites and drink a cappuccino. The cafe is actually really good.
