A very long day, which becomes very tedious after the initial excitement and novelty of seeing the steam engine.
The route was changed by Saphos from the one we initially booked.. Instead, the return journey gave a beautiful view of the slums, mosques and littered streets of Blackburn..
The steam engine broke down at Carlisle, so we had to return back 6.5 hours by a diesel engine.
They ran out of bacon after the first half an hour.
Its pot luck who you get sitting next to, or nearby, if you end up sitting next to someone who is very loud and annoying, then you cant get away for about 14 hours.
The return journey was very cold as the staff kept opening the windows.
However, the staff in general are very helpful and friendly.
It's an amazing way to see lots of sheep and some pretty views of the Lake District, but the rest of the journey highlighted the decline of British towns and cities.
In the end I we were desperate for it to end and get the hell off the train.

Thanks to everyone at Saphos Trains for a most memorable Easter Saturday trip to Canterbury on the Golden Arrow, a beautifully restored train.
The whole day was well organised, the food was excellent and all the staff were welcoming and friendly, particularly the young people who looked after us in coach C and made the day so enjoyable. They were smart, professional and cheerful, explained everything clearly and worked well as a team with service of a high standard throughout a long day.
This was a new experience for us, but certainly not the last…

A day trip to Canterbury from Brockenhurst ,7 hours there 7 hours back, too long and too far.Service on the train excellent, very expensive snack boxes and cheap bucks fizz and wine.
We were attracted by the romance of voyaging on a steam trainee never got close the train being off the end of the platform. This not the way to manage a day on a steam train, the organisers need to look at how the west highland railway is run, we spent a wonderful day journeying to Malliag, the engine being up front and centre at all times,a real character.Sadly we never got close to the Royal Scot,it might as well have been a tractor.
Won't be using this company again .Very expensive no attempt to associate passengers with the 'Royal Scott'

A day trip to Canterbury from Brockenhurst. The service was good but the snacks were unhealthy and there was no choice of tea available ie fruit or herbal . The journey was far too long 7 hours each way and there was no opportunity in coach J (at the back )to see the engine which in my mind was the whole point of going otherwise it could well have been pulled by a diesel. I have been on many journeys under steam which were far more exciting at a fraction of the cost of £495.00
Very disappointing.

Booked a day trip on Saphos trains- on Royal Scot Steam Train. Went from Brockenhurst to Canterbury and then back round through Dover, London and back to Brock, Bournemouth & Poole. Great day, beautiful train and excellent staff. We booked window seats for 2 with table, we had unlimited tea & coffee and a huge snack box in morning for outward trip and another each in afternoon for homeward journey ! Bought bacon roll £3.50 for breakfast on train at 7am- alcoholic drinks and breakfast rolls were great value. Could not fault the staff who were fantastic- especially Kevin and his wife Jill - great service ! Long day but well worth it, even if you are not a train boff, which we are not. Great experience.

Day trip to Canterbury from Brockenhurst. The experience from start to finish was truly amazing. All the staff were friendly and attentive. Shout out to Alistair and his team in Carriage E. The best! What we had feared would be a long day - 6.30am to 11.30pm - sped by. Even at the end of the day, the staff were all smiling and nothing was too much trouble. Would definitely experience this again.

We enjoyed a round trip from Basingstoke. There was a class 47 pulling the train for the first leg, before the Royal Scot took over for the run around Kent. We went for the first class option, which was well worth the extra for the wide seats, lots of snacks and of course teas and coffees. Cannot recommend this type of day out highly enough.

We’ve just returned from the most amazing and memorable day trip to Canterbury. The train was beautiful, very luxurious and comfortable.
What really made the trip for us was the staff. We were so well taken care of from the moment we stepped foot on the train. Every member of staff we dealt with were wonderful but must pay special thanks to the staff from our carriage - Mark, Josh and Lauren. They were so smart, professional, attentive and worked really well as a team. They also had a great sense of humour and kept us all laughing.

The food was constant and of a very high standard. We really enjoyed everything that we ate and have great admiration for the chef, Molly, who made sure we were so well fed! It can’t be easy cooking such delicious food for so many people, on a moving train!

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this experience but we have had a brilliant day out that we will remember forever.

Thank you Saphos Trains, and thank you Mark, Josh, Lauren and Molly!

Took my wife on the Cotswold Explorer last week. We were in the well appointed Pullman dining car and had fantastic service from the very wonderful staff. The food was great and was accompanied by copious drinks. The tea kept coming all day!

We were steam hauled for most of the journey but other than the sound and the clouds of smoke and steam past the windows there is little sense of this. Sadly there was little opportunity to see or photograph the loco on the trip or at the turn around.

The heritage carriages are beautifully restored and presented but there are the characteristics of the time, no air conditioning etc. So bear that in mind.
