This is well worth a visit! We took the steam train from Alston to Slaggyford and then walked back. Beautiful scenery and amazing wildlife. We saw lapwings with chicks, curlew and a roe buck all alongside the railway. The Little Buffet Car cafe at Slaggyford is great. The railway, stations and halts and all of the information boards are really impressive. We will come again I’m sure!…

Free parking is available at Alston station. The facilities at Alston are first class with very friendly and helpful staff showing us where all the exhibits were. It is obvious that the railway has thought well about putting Covid safe practices in place which made the visit even more pleasurable. Very enjoyable train journey to Slaggyford which on the day of our visit was steam hauled. A very good afternoon out for anyone who has a passing interest in steam trains and credit to all concerned for what they have achieved in developing the line and facilities oveer the tyears…

Had a lovely time with my mum and dog on the train. We travelled down to Slaggyford and then did a nice walk around the many local footpaths (you definitely need a map) then travelled back on the train. Amenities at Alston station are good and the staff were very friendly, welcoming and helpful.…

Lovely couple of hours in a scenic route with some streams along the way and rush greenery in summer. Stops at station on the end of the line when the engine changes ends. Book in advance if you want to sit in a completely closes compartments. Else you will be seated in a more open but covered part of the train…
