I would highly recommend John and Lake District Bikes ,
John's knowledge of the local area
is fantastic making planning a ride out so easy and to suit all abilities.
The bikes themselves are of the highest quality and back up service
is second to none.
We tried out two e bikes , and what a difference they made
getting up the hills around the lake district , they made the journey
so much more enjoyable.

2020 must be the year that E-bikes have really taken off. The addition of three Trek Powerfly Electric bikes have really extended the range available for hire. All the Electric bikes have excellent battery length to enable a full days cycling in the LakeDistrict either on or off road.

Great quality bikes for all the family - super friendly service and really helpful in ensuring we understood the gears before setting off. Would highly recommend this place - the ride to Coniston lake from the start point is fairly short and easy to find some beautiful spots to stop, swim and picnic around the lakeside.
Large yellow bike denotes the bike hire location and is easy to find after a long day of fun at Coniston.

We try really hard to keep the bikes in pristine condition, with a full clean and polish between hires. We are annually increasing the range of bikes on offer to ensure everybody old and young and in-between has the opportunity to cycle in the Lake District.

We highly recommend hiring bikes from John. We rented 2 x hardtail e-bikes that were great to ride and in excellent condition (brand new). We are fairly amateur bikers and John was kind enough to talk us through the most suitable type of bikes prior to our booking, after which he explained everything in detail on our arrival so as to ensure we were confident before heading off on our day’s adventure! He gave us a great route to follow, while being sure to highlight key viewpoints and landmarks.
In short, we received an outstanding level of service that felt both professional and personal, plus it was great to have an experienced professional who has plenty of knowledge of the local area!

Thanks, its so good to be open again after being closed for 4 months. Its been a challenge to get back up to speed as the spring bank holiday has been very busy with bike hire especially all the E-bikes. Im delighted you enjoyed you days cycling in the Lake District and enjoyed the route I suggested. There is so much to see and experience on bikes here in the quiet south Lake District.

Sadly I had a very different experience to other reviewers. Fine if everything goes to plan. For me it did not.
I booked through Grizedale MTB website having reviewed the T&C's. This hire service is now provided by John's business. This transfer not immediately clear when you select the option to book a bike. Neither is the fact that John's business has very different T&C's to Grizedale MTB.
When the order confirmation came through I noted the pick up point was an 8 mile drive from where I expected. Initially John refused a request to cancel (Grizedale includes option to cancel for no charge). After further discussion he cancelled the order but keeping 29% of the £140 cost.
This is unreasonable in my view. I know he has his own T&C's but these are not the ones presented to me when I hired the bike. I don't expect John to be out of pocket but given processing a cancellation is likely a 5 minute job then this equates to £800 an hour for admin.
IMHO there are other local bike shops more deserving of my business. I hope you agree and go elsewhere.

You know not everyone takes the time to address all the information on the web site www.lakedistrictbikes.com where every link from Grizedale Mtn Bikes [now no longer hiring bikes from the original premises in the forest] states clearly that our hire base is south of Grizedale Forest.
Clearly this review failed to take notice of all this information, and even admitted so.
Every effort is made to ensure that potential clients are not mislead in any way as the last thing needed is hassle at these very busy times.
A discretionary refund has been made less an administration fee to cover the cost of admin/and relisting the bikes on the web site by my professional web company ... all of which costs.
Had this reviewer taken the time to call me or read the information on the web site www.lakedistrictbikes.com or read the terms of conditions of hire to which he agreed to on completing the on line booking this situation would not have occurred
It is impossible to hire bikes with Grizedale Mountain Bikes in Grizedale Forest, therefore any comments appertaining to this organisations T&C are totally irrelevant.
The link to www.lakedistrictbikes.com from Grizedale mountain bikes web site is an attempt to continue to offer bike hire in the beauty of quiet south Lake District national Park.
At our base in Lowick we offer free on site parking to cyclists hiring bikes as well as discussing routes and supplying maps to ensure a great days cycling on or off road. We have established a comprehensive fleet of hire bikes from top end road bikes through hybrid leisure bikes with over 27 E-bikes of different types available for hire. These are complimented by a range of trailers for children or pets.
All our clients who hire bikes are very happy with every aspect of the bike hire as the reviews on Google ,Tripadvisor and on the web site testify.

I found it easier to book and choose bikes over the phone to get the correct size of bikes for 6 of us. They were ready when we arrived and John was very helpful with adjustment of bikes and supply of helmet and maps for routes etc.
My electric mountain bike was very powerful which made the hill climbs doable for me and managed to keep up with more experienced friends on peddle bikes.
The cafe and pub we stopped on the way were welcome breaks as we were out nearly 5 hours and the long route we chose was 28miles mainly on tracks and roads. Going through the forest more would have been great but may have cut the day a bit short.
The rain didn't spoil the trip although what mudguards we had were pretty small so we got pretty splattered up the back but it was a great day which finished in sunshine.

Mudguards vary from bike to bike , and clearly with the Autumnal rains bringing the dry summer to an end, are becoming more pertinent.
The majority of the E-bikes to hire have comprehensive mudguards, with the hybrid E-bikes having factory fitted mudguards. The Hard tail E-bikes have a variety of mudguards and the full suspension E-bikes less so.
We get clients for off road E-bikes who want the mudguards removed, but this is not possible as they are firmly fixed to the bike.
Anyone venturing off road in Grizedale Forest in the Autumn/Winter/Spring will expect to get splattered regardless of the fitting of mudguards to the type of bike hired, so its important to dress appropriately.
For clients traveling up for a days bike hire we do offer the opportunity to shower before climbing into the car to return home. This is free as long a you bring your own towel.
Im delighted you had a great day out with the rest of the party on normal bikes as you enjoyed the E-bike.

Hired 2 electric (for the non-cyclists) + 1 titanium Enigma road bike & followed John's suggested route around Coniston, Esthwaite & Windermere. Around 40 miles and greatly enjoyed by everyone - especially the uphill sections by the electric riders! Lots of places to stop for coffee, lunch + views & an all round great day out.
John's place is easy to find & you are on the back roads very quickly. Bikes all worked perfectly. I will hire again from John for a different route next time we are in the Lakes & can definitely recommend Lake District Bikes.

Thanks Shaun, when you come to the Lake District you expect to see the Lakes! We are very fortunate here in the south of the Lake District National Park to have quiet country lanes which run alongside Coniston Water , Windermere and Esthwaite Water. This 30 mile round trip also takes in a number of pubs and cafes so there are lots of opportunities for stopping , eating and drinking! A fun day out on the hire bikes for everyone.

We had never ridden E-bikes before and we were so glad we hired them through Lake District Bikes, as the bikes were an absolute delight to ride. They gave that extra boost needed for difficult ascents, a little bit like having a large number of mushrooms at your disposal on MarioKart ;). John was super friendly and extremely helpful in picking the appropriate bikes for our needs, as having a 5footer and a 6foot8er in our group we didn’t really know what to choose. One of the group hadn’t ridden a bike in over 15 years and quickly picked up confidence as they were so simple to use. John even provided us with maps and gave us advice on where to go to make the most out of our day. We cycled up the side of Coniston Water taking in some breathtaking views, down through Grizedale Forest attempting some more difficult terrain, and then travelled back to base on some beautiful quiet country roads. The only thing that made me sad was when the day came to end and it left me wanting my own E-bike!
Thanks for a fabulous day out John, we will back!

Thanks, I look forward to your return to further explore this quieter part of the Lake District National Park. From Lowick Green our hire base there are great rides in every direction . South into the Furness Peninsular,East towards Grange Over Sands,North towards Coniston and West towards Broughton in Furness.

I hired three E-bikes for myself and my two teenage sons. It was a fantastic experience and the bikes were amazing. John gave brilliant guidance on where to go, and after a brief but helpful tutorial we were able to set off with a couple of miles on the road getting us used to how the bikes worked. Then we set off up the hill for some fabulous views on the way up to Grizedale. A few hours exploring the Grizedale trails before a spectacular ride back for my most memorable circular bike tour ever!
Although we are all pretty fit, the hills are steep and technically difficult so I would thoroughly recommend the E-bikes to everyone. It makes the terrain more accessible and means you can really cover some ground without exhaustion on the uphill trails taking away from the excitement of the downhill sections. It’s not cheating, it just means you can do more!
The bikes themselves were well maintained and fantastic to ride. I would thoroughly recommend this place as easily accessible, simple parking and perfect access to wonderful trails. Can’t wait to come back!

The most fantastic experience and huge thanks to John for accommodating us and ensuring we had everything we needed for a perfect day! We accidentally booked the wrong day on the website and John was so helpful and allowed us to rearrange our booking which put our mind at ease. The bikes were great too and easy to use. John provided us with helmets, repair kits and hi-vis gear so we felt safe and at ease knowing we had everything we needed once we'd set off. We collected the bikes around 10am and got back by 5pm so it really was a full on day of exploring. John gave us a great route and map to follow and the views biking back through Bethercar Moor overlooking Coniston Water were incredible. We would highly recommend Lake District Bikes for anyone planning a visit to the Lakes!

A day out cycling in the south Lake District is a joy! We even have some really dry sunny days regardless of the Lake District's reputation for damp days. Here in the south Lake District we have our own micro climate being very close to sea level, and sheltered from the north and east by mountains.
I so glad you had such a blast on the bikes, thanks for you review and recommendations.

We hired 4 ebikes for the day and were hugely surprised at how good they were and how much fun we had. John recommended a route along the edge of Coniston water and then down Windermere, about 40 miles. We had an amazing ride through stunning countryside. We would highly recommend Lake District Bikes

Yes this route which takes in country lanes along the shores of Coniston Water and Windermere, is clearly marked out on the maps I provide. This includes cafes and pubs which I recommend. The E-Bikes on hire are perfect for this route which does include a few sharp steep climbs.
