- CaroleB58Leicester, United Kingdom55 contributionsWorth the visitGreat informative tour through the working of the bobbin mill. Amazing insight into a bygone tradition. Mill is well preserved & the guides are excellent, very impressed in seeing the process of bobbins being made. Highly recommend if in the area visitVisited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 October 2023
- culkeinEdinburgh, United Kingdom164 contributionsGreat visitThis was an excellent visit. The mill is very well preserved and the static displays give a vivid picture of its operation and the hard times experienced by the workforce. The guided tour, during which some of the machines are switched on, was very clearly presented and full of interesting information. It took around 40 minutes and was well pitched for the general visitor. The staff were extremely welcoming and ready to field questionsVisited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 October 2023
- Penny OLeek, United Kingdom21 contributionsAn unexpected and fascinating journey into the history and culture of bobbin manufacture. This English Heritage bobbin mill is a fascinating place. Preserved as it was when it finally closed in 1971, the original machinery, tools, oak swill baskets and artifacts were described with interest and enthusiasm by our excellent tour guide, Ann. Practical demonstrations of how bobbins were made added to the experience and offered an insight into the difficult and demanding working conditions of the period.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 October 2023

- Cavegirl1980Westhoughton, United Kingdom187 contributionsExceeded expectationsExceeded expectations. If I'm honest, we were on holiday and it was raining so we were looking for indoor things to do. This was really interesting! Amazing social history and a really informative demonstration of the mill. Our guide, Harriet, was very knowledgeable and engaging, including for the kids. The lady on the reception was also very enthusiastic and engaging. Would like to return in better weather to explore the woodland.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 11 April 2024
- Nellybrown0Martinborough, New Zealand17 contributionsRecommended for all agesFantastic museum - very informative. Our tour guide walked us through the whole process of making bobbins, crucial components for the cotton industry during the Industrial Revolution. Steam engine was working on the day we visited as an added bonus.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 July 2024
- ABC622014Shrewsbury, United Kingdom272 contributionsBrilliantwe are EH members and after looking where there were any EH places to visit in the area we were staying the Bobbin Mill came up. We had no idea what to expect but it was brilliant. The guide was knowledgeable and pleasant, we got to see how the bobbin is made and the huge array of different bobbins.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 18 July 2024

We have driven past many times then a friend recommended so booked on line as you need to during these strange times. Covid safe as they have reduced the amount allowed in at one time.
First room needs description on exhibits or someone to give information.
Caroline gave a detailed description of how machinery worked and it's purpose before switching it all on. Description of everything was geared to two young children who were visiting. Outside barn turned into information centre very informative. Well worth a visit.

A lovely little experience that could be easily missed if you didn’t know about it. Parking on site (free with English Heritage membership and a 15 min walk down to Lakeside if you have membership and want to avoid parking costs at Lakeside). Nice outdoor areas to explore if you have a dog (dogs can’t come inside though) as well as a little woodland area over the stream. If you book a visit (again, free with English Heritage membership) you get a fantastic demonstration of how the wood bobbins were made using the actual original machines. I’ve never seen somewhere where the whole system still works and is a great experience. The demonstration/tour takes about 20 minutes. Some lovely outdoor picnic tables and seating if you want to take some lunch. Staff very knowledgeable and obviously have expertise in using the traditional machinery. Great for all the family.

Visited the Bobbin Mill on a recommendation. We were the only visitors at the time so had a personal demonstration of the machinery. Nowdays, we think of the Lakes as a holiday destination but after this visit and a visit to a mining museum it comes as a bit of a surprise to find out how industrialised the area was in the past. The lady who demonstrated the machinery is very knowledgeable on the history of the mill and its workers. It was a very hard life but one that put bread on the table.

This was indeed a very rainy day in the Lakes, and with a lot of local flooding. We had previously booked in advance .
This is for people who have an interest in social and local history, and if you are, you will not be disappointed. This was until 1970 a working Mill producing bobbins of various shapes and sizes for the local Linen Mills. The history goes way back to the mid 1800.s. It is a fascinating place of old workshops, tools and machinery. Our tour was within a small group ( of equally wet people ) and was conducted by an amazing lady who sadly I cannot name . She demonstrated the process of making a bobbin from start to finish using the machinery appropriate at each stage. Truly amazing !
The Mill has walks and wooded areas to explore, but sadly the weather made exploration impossible. A must for those who enjoy woodland, water, walks and wildlife. We will certainly go back, but in better weather.
(English Heritage and with a very small gift shop ? ( No Cafe )

Firstly good point, fantastic staff, the 2 ladies were very nice , chatty and a real credit to the mill.
The issue is cost, 3 pound to park car 11 pound to visit , the 20 min tour was great very informative but that's it, that's what my £14 got, 20 min tour , English heritage have a look at this, drop your prices , worth no more than £5 for visit.
Honestly Do not waste money visiting here. Too expensive.

A new low in customer service - I pre booked and prepaid for tickets for the weekend of 30/31 July some time ago. Despite having all the relevant contact details, they did not bother to contact me to let me know that the mill would be closed due to “operational reasons”. We are understandably not impressed to visit at the appointed time and find it closed. Amazing that three days later, they have finally let us know they were closed and will refund the payment in 10 days time!! I would give a minus rating if I could and please don’t bother to reply, there is absolutely no justification for such shoddy behaviour.

Headed here on a rainy trip to the Lake District and so glad we did. The setting is beautiful and plenty to walk around (or take a picnic if the weather is nicer!). Covid measures meant that the groups were kept to a small size and given plenty of time to look around. The staff were very knowledgeable and it was amazing to see the machines working and how the bobbins were made.
Only thing I would say is don't walk from Lakeside village - it's a bit dicey along the roads! But that was down to our poor planning!

Scott Park is an absolute gem, providing a wonderful insight into an industry that disappeared over 50 years ago. We had a fascinating guided tour and demonstration from the enthusiastic and knowledgeable team. Well worth a visit and the entrance fee, if like us, you are not members of English Heritage.

We are members of English Heritage & came across the Bobbin Mill by accident & thought a place with a difference. There was a guided tour which we only had to wait about 20 mins for no problems. The guide was very informative & gave us demonstrations on how the bobbins were made & the history of the mill. It was all very interesting & a visit with a difference, we would recommend

We were in the area and decided to pay a visit. You only need an hour here but it is well worth a visit. The tour and demonstration only takes about 20 minutes but the guide is very knowledgeable and you get a real feel for what it must have been like to have worked here.

Hi, is the walk to High Dam accessible for an electric wheelchair, please? Any recommendations for a dog & wheelchair friendly eatery nearby, please? Thanks for any help.
Written 1 September 2018
Sorry I can’t help with this. Have you tried contacting the Mill or Tourist Board? We had a lovely meal at the Swan at Newby Bridge. We ate outside as big area by the river that would certainly be dog friendly. It was quite narrow but there were plenty of pushchairs so I should think wheelchairs would be okay. Food was good but price was quite high but not extortionate.

I’m not sure that you can take them around the factory but I do remember seeing a dog there so it’s worth giving them a ring

Do they sell the Stott Park Bobbin Mill guidebook ,which has a red spine, at the mill itself?
Written 8 July 2018
Yes we sell the Stott Park Bobbin Mill guidebook with the red spine in our gift shop. We also have various sizes of original bobbins for sale and you can find some unique items made out of bobbins. We have kitchen roll bobbins, egg timer bobbins and bobbin stringholders with scissors to name a few items

You're better off checking the English Heritage site for those details.
I would post the link to the relevant webpage but Tripadvisor doesn't allow it.
