Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Went in on a passing visit on the way home, staff were welcoming and pleasant. The tour guide knew the answer to every question he was asked, even thought me new facts about my town where the museum is located (Workington). An interesting place to visit especially for local people.

There's lots of artifacts and information on them

Also great place for a venue of any sort, decor on tables and around the venue room is great (seen the pre set up room for the next day)

Admissions free but I donated £5 as I see it as a town treasure

Held my fathers funeral tea here and I have to say that the location, function room and food was excellent. At the worst time for our family Trish and the team could not have been more helpful and supportive. The room was presented beautifully and food was amazing and we could have had anything we liked off their menu. Guests were very well looked after and the hot and cold buffet scrumptious. Highly recommend for any function. A number of the guests also had a look round the museum as they had never visited Workington before and found it really interesting. Thanks so much to all the staff at Helena Thompson, lovely job in difficult circumstances.

What a wonderful find!
The Helena Thompson`museum was gifted to the town by a lady who was ahead of her times. It contains many local treasures and the man who showed us round was interesting, knowledgeable and passionate about Workington. We had previously visited the ruins of Workington Hall, ancestral home of the Curwen family, which is opposite the museum. So we were interested to find a scale model and many information boards about its building and the family's history. The Luck of Workington, a cup given to the family by Mary Queen of Scots, is displayed well. Every facet of Workington's history is displayed...Percy Kelly the artist, The story of the Steel Works and the Bessemer Converter, costumes, furniture, paintings, ship building, local industries...all most interesting!
Our guide brought the house alive and we intend to return in the near future!
There is the opportunity to have a hot drink and the museum has a diary of special events which involve afternoon tea. They also cater for weddings and special birthdays.

What really sets this place apart is the staff. We had a wonderfully warm welcome and nothing was too much trouble for staff who evidently really care about the place, they are very knowledgeable and only too happy to answer any questions that you might have. The museum itself is an interesting mix of social and industrial history and the function rooms and gardens are lovely. The cafe served up a nice cuppa and a lovely sandwich, so if you are in Workington would reccomend a visit. Looking forward to returning in the near future.
Thank you, David & Hayley

Great local museum. Not over-curated or over-designed as so many museums are. Thanks to Steve for the interesting information delivered with genuine passion. Topics include Mary Queen of Scots, Workington Hall, Curwen family, local Rugby League and Football, mining, industry, social history. Relies on donations so do give generously! Loved the "Onion" (Symphonion), only one four thought to still be in existence.

Just what a local museum should be, enthusiastic, knowledgeable, voluntary staff. Slightly untidy, but, amazingly comprehensive cover of the history of what I always regarded as a 'depressed' area. Spent almost the whole afternoon and will have to go back to explore the rest.

My grandson loves History, we've been going for weeks but finally got today. We went to see the Harrington room as my son made something for it. We were shown round by Mr Jones he was brilliant with my grandson. Jacob loves the story of Mary Queen of Scots, we went last time to an exabition. He can't wait to go again. Thanks so much for the tour.

The company that I worked for has recently been closed down and I was fortunate enough to acquire one or two things, including an immaculate, and rather old, catalogue of their products!
I donated everything that I had been given to the museum because I firmly believe that it's a part of Workington's heritage that should not be forgotten!
Whilst I was their I was given a quick tour of some of the items on display!
For anyone with an interest in the past life of Workington the Helena Thompson Museum is a "must do" place to visit!
