About
A visit to Thirsk Birds of Prey Centre is inspiring and uplifting. TBOPC has one of the largest collections of flying birds in the North. The centre is home to around 100 birds from 50 different species from around the world which enables us to fly an amazing variety of birds in each of our daily free flight displays. All set in in our beautiful Yorkshire countryside. We fly a selection of owls, vultures, eagles and kites to name but a few of the different species that call the centre their home. Our passionate and knowledgeable bird staff will provide a light-hearted and informative commentary throughout the flying display. In-between displays you can take a walk around the aviaries to view our very impressive collection of birds in their rest areas. If you share our passion for birds of prey and would like to get much closer and learn more about them, we offer experience days in small groups. Experiences start from £60 pp.

    Worth a visit
A group of us visited here over the weekend for something to do, and we were pleasantly surprised. I thought it was only going to be small, but they have an impressive array of birds. The live shows was really enjoyable, lasting about 35 minutes, and the staff were knowledgeable. They even brought the birds round the edge of the area so everyone could have a good look/get photos.

    Excellent afternoon or morning out
Excellent value for money. We arrived just after lunch and the lady explained that due to the heat the last display was cancelled but took us straight through to see the display. Highly recommend a afternoon or morning here everything is clean, the birds are well looked after and seem happy. You can get ice creams, sandwiches and drinks. Well worth the 9.00 each admission. Enjoy we did.

    Wonderful Experience - Excellent Centre!
This was a wonderful experience. Great handlers who clearly cared about the birds and were extremely knowledgeable. Terrific with participants. This was very safe and very hands on - under supervision (which was what made it an excellent experience). We did the half day - and it was packed. Highly recommend this and would love to come back.

    Fantastic place
This place is absolutely brilliant it seems as though its not just a job to all the people here it is what they live for. The displays are amazing they do some fantastic work with all the birds in their care from hand rearing to training them out of hours for the displays. We arrived for the 11.30 display & ended up staying for all 3 displays of the day. Each display is different & very informative & sometimes funny when the birds don't do what they are supposed to but its not a problem & they aren't made to do what they don't want to do. If we lived closer we would definitely be here a lot more . Fantastic place . We'll done to all involved 👏

Brilliant and excellent value for money….do go!
We are fans of birds of prey so when on a UK holiday as we are now (residents of West Sussex…staying near Leyburn) we spotted this on an internet search. We were not disappointed. Obviously a family run business, they and the staff were clearly very proud of their birds and so they should be. We went to x2 displays, both excellent. It was fantastic value for money at £9 per adult….other attractions cost much more and are not as satisfying. Cannot recommend highly enough. Well done to Kerry, Dave and Colin and who we think was Mrs Colin in the shop.

    Simply wonderful
We stopped here on the way to Northumberland not knowing anything about it, only the name. What a great start to our holidays. The owls and birds were great and the display 'African Birds of Prey' was simply fantastic. Not seen Storks fly before and it was wonderful to see. The staff clearly look after the birds and we felt privileged to visit. We will be recommending this place to all our friends.

Superb visit with granddaughters today. Good price for the family .Watched 2 brilliant flying displays and fell in love with the kookabura. The staff are brilliant and will answer questions you may have. There are tables for picnics and very clean toilets.Would recommend like we did to arrive about 11am and see the 11.30 display .Then have picnic and wander around birds before 1.30 show.

Visit to Thirsk Birds of Prey Centre
We are avid fans of birds of prey and made a return visit to the centre. Staff were very welcoming and easily approachable. There are a great variety of birds to see and all look o good and well cared for. We watched the 11.30 display and the 1.30 African Adventure its easy to become so immersed in the display and found the knowledgable commentarys full of information. Having Richard Attenbourough speaking during the African Adventure was excellent and highlighted the plight of these wonderful creatures in the wild at the hand of poachers. A great visit and thoroughly recommend making the time to go there

Went to watch the displays, ended up staying and watching the 11.30 and 1.30 displays. Different birds in each display but very good and entertaining.
Everyone should visit here and help out.

We had a great day at The Birds of Prey Sanctuary in Thirsk yesterday. My wife and I saw some of the (sadly) rarest birds on the planet. The staff were very knowledgeable and professional and explained how each bird had been acquired, or indeed bred. It was heartening to see how much pride they had in their profession and their relationships with each of the birds. We were allowed to handle some whilst we saw others flying freely around the arena.
I would highly recommend visiting these guys, and spending some time on one of their experience days.

This venue houses 148 birds of prey which are on display and many fly every day. I knew roughly what to expect but my experience far exceeded anything I imagined. I was booked on the full day experience which allows you very close experience with many birds as you get to hand feed them as they land on your outstreched arm after flying. I had 15 different bird encounters during the day which is between 10:30am and 3:00pm and these included Bald Eagle, European White-tailed Eagle, Chilean Blue Eagle etc. The staff clearly care deeply for the birds and are super friendly and knowledgeable.
If you do not want the personal experience, you can visit on a day ticket and see the demonstrations at 11:30am and 1:30pm. Seeing the Stellar's Sea Eagle fly freely is an amazing sight as this is the largest Eagle in the world.

Bought this for my husband (BOP day experience ), I had spectator ticket and it was an EXCELLENT day, well worth the money. Staff were extremely knowledgeable and made the day informative and enjoyable. Great to see their enthusiasm and how they put the birds first in every thing they do. Conservation at its VERY best . Thoroughly recommend this and encourage others to support this important work. Thank you

We visited on a soggy Bank Holiday Monday. We knew before arriving that the flying displays could be called off due to the weather but decided to take the risk, travelling over from Skipton. We had Tesco club card vouchers to use and this was no problem to the lady on reception. She was friendly and concise with her information and informing us that the 11.30am display was taking place but could not guarantee the others. This was frustrating to them as well as any guests. The area has suffered so much rain this winter that conditions are very soggy.
We were invited to the 11.30am flying session and given poly bags to sit on to save having a soggy bottom, great idea. Display was fantastic, great stories of the birds history and explaining that the birds are fresh from winter break so not flying as they will in a few weeks. After the display we went into the shop to have a warm coffee and look round whilst drying off. There are no seats inside but you're welcome to stay there and shelter a while. We then went and looked round all the lovely enclosures for the birds. All birds lookef happy, have immaculate enclosures and great information boards on each. We loved that they all have names.
We decided to go back to the car and eat lunch (not a problem) and come back for the 1.30pm display. This again was brilliant.
We will come back in the summer holidays and hopefully better weather. A lovely place.

A windy and chilly March day only a few days after reopening. We got there at 11 and looked round all the birds first. There were interesting information boards such as what the colours of owls eyes mean. Our 7yo niece loved this and inspected all the owls eyes and has told everyone who will listen about owl eyes since we got home! We watched both displays and also paid £10 pp for ‘meet the minnies’ which was well worth it to have the experience of a close up experience with owls (great photo opportunity)

The two displays used a variety of birds from all over the world and the staff were very informative telling us about the birds in general and also the individual bird’s history, how they have trained them etc. This was absolutely fascinating and their passion was evident towards making a difference to the world of birds of prey such as explaining the plight of vultures from poaching. We will definitely be returning later this year to hear more about the birds. Thank you for a really informative day.

This is one of the worst value tourist attraction I have ever been to. We were told the bird flights were not happening due to the weather, which was fine, but we were then stopped from accessing the rest of the park due to filming (where they were filming the birds flying(!)) We had to leave after about 15mins as we were not able to access anything. To make matters worse, the staff then accused us of slamming the door on the way out (we hadn't). We paid £29 for 10 mins entertainment and to be insulted on our way out just too much. This place is probably great when the weather is great, and you can access the actual park; however if events are curtailed so much that you cannot do anything, you need to significantly reduce your entrance price. Moreover, showing consideration towards your guests would go a long way. Really disappointed.

Thank you for your review, all our spooktaculer flying display advertising which is held at 1.30 clearly states "Weather Dependant" so choosing to visit in heavy rain was a little optimistic on your part. We feel this review is a little unfair when you have chosen to visit an outdoor attraction on the last day of the season in poor weather conditions. You did not have to leave after 15 minutes that was purely your choice, we have reviewed the cctv and can confirm that the door was slammed, and a member of staff did enquire if everything was alright to with the reply was "yes I would tell you if it wasn't". When we are unable to fly our displays due to the weather, we do offer to sign the receipt so that you can revisit on a better day if holidaying in the area or live local. Sadly you did not give us this opportunity as you did not engage with any member of staff prior to your sudden departure. We are sorry our filming spoilt your visit, however this vital film work was arranged with very short notice due to the presenters availability and our policy is not to promote filming days. This very important project was to help promote our conservational and education work that we do at the centre, part of this filming was to fly a young owl to the presenter for the first time, so with the heavy rain, film crews and umbrellas as distractions we decided to close the gate into the flying area for 10 minutes whilst this took place, this gate closure would not warrant a full days closure, The gate was staffed at all times giving ample opportunity for you to enquire as to when access would be available again, and this would have been explained if you had actually approached the gate. We also noticed our other visitors enjoyed watching the remaining filming taking place from a distance. FYI The film clip is due to be broadcast on channel 5 on Christmas Eve. We notice that both the adult visitors from the family group have reviewed the centre in a negative manner, I can only image this is to try and reduce our 5 star review status which is achieved by the hard work and dedication of all the staff at the centre
