About
St Mary's is an active church in the center of Thirsk. The building has been described as a fine example of a medieval church. We love the building and want to allow others to enjoy it as well, either to meet with God, enjoy the architecture or soak up the history. Our team of volunteers look forward to welcoming you! Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I like looking around old churches and this one was full of interest.
Many thanks to the two lady volunteers who spent time with us telling stories and explaining the history of the church. Lovely to seek out the mice and the beavers!
Well worth a visit.

We originally were just taking pictures of the outside and then saw the church was open .
There was an older couple there who were volunteers to show visitors the church . What a great idea ! There was also a pamphlet with numbers to follow as you walk around explaining so much about the church ( another great idea ! )
We loved having a chat with people so willing to give of their time for their community and their church .

Easter service. Shame the old traditions have gone. We missed the prayer and hymn books and sad the clergy wore everyday clothes for this great occasion in the churches calender. Disappointed

Having been to Thirsk many times, must have been with my eyes closed as never noticed this beautiful church, only came across it by accident when we parked near by, such a wonderful building in a beautiful setting, maybe next time I’ll spend more time exploring it!

Gothic with dark wooden interior fittings. One of the bells is said to have come from Fountain Abbey dating from 1410. Interesting plaques detailing former incumbents and notable locals. The nice lady guide was very helpful.

The church was closed when we visited but a stroll round the ancient grave yard is a history lesson. Impressive building and a shame we couldn’t go in.

This church has to be in my top ten. I called in here when I was visiting Thirsk back in August. The grounds are well cared for, the church itself inside and out is truly magnificent.
Worth a visit.

We came here for a quick visit and stayed for communion. Very welcoming parishioners (the lady in particular who welcomed us as we entered) and a charming vicar.
