The White Horse is adjacent to the most spectacular views that take your breath away, park at the visitor centre at the top of Sutton Bank, (lovely cafe and gift shop) and you will be rewarded with views for miles and miles, stay on the top path and return the same way if you struggle with hills or take the circular walk if you are reasonably fit. Very pleasant afternoon trip. (Look out for astronomy evenings at the visitor centre.)
These kind of chalk attractions were always designed to be viewed from a distance, of course they'll be a bit weird close up

A great day out with wonderful countryside with an opportunity to marvel at simple but iconic Yorkshire feature. Originally sculptured by a school master and his pupils the horse is now maintained by volunteers.
If you are expecting an ancient monument with gift shop, cafe, toilets and slot machines then this isn't the place for you so if that is you then don't cross the Yorkshire border, stay at home in front of your chimney breast mounted 60" tv soaking up culture from reality tv....

Great day out and if you park at the car park at the bottom of the white horse it's free! The steps from the car park are very steep but worth it for the views at the top. We then walked along the flat path to Sutton bank visitor centre which is about 1 1/2 miles. You can't watch the gliders take off and land on the way which was interesting. Plenty of seats along the way for a rest of needed. A great few hours out

Nice walk from the car park to the top of the horse. There are quite a lot of steps but there’s a hand rail if you need it. The horse is on a steep slope and from the top you can imagine what hard work it must have been to create it.
The weather wasn’t great so we couldn’t really see the view but it should be good on a clear day.
You can keep walking along the top of the horse and eventually come back round through the trees to the car park according to the sign at the bottom but we missed that!

We went to see the white horse rather than walk up to it where we knew we wouldn't get such a good view.
After a quick google, we discovered that the best view is just past the village sign as you enter Kilburn from Thirsk. There are 2 benches next to each other and a tiny laybay to pull into. It is right ahead of you enahancing an already beautiful landscape.
Definitely worth a stop in you are nearby.

You have two options: either park at the Visitor Centre (which is a decent little place to loose an hour) and walk just over a mile to the foot of the horse, or park at the foot of the horse itself. Whichever option you choose (we walked around the Visitor centre and then drove to the horse) be prepared for incredibly steep roads to drive up; to the actual horse itself, add a road that is scarily narrow aswell as steep and not big enough for two cars to pass into the mix and it becomes quite a hellraising experience even for a seasoned driver like myself. Luckily, we visited towards the end of quite a miserable day and therefore did not pass any other cars going up or back down.
It is worth a visit and I am glad I have seen it close up, but I have to say it looks better from a distance because close up you cannot see the head and it looks in a poor state of repair.

Well, I’m genuinely surprised this has good reviews. I rarely leave bad reviews, but I have to be honest. We visited this place whilst on holiday as we were at something else in the area and had a bit of time to kill. I wish we hadn’t bothered. We drove to the car park that google told us to go to. Upon entering the car park we immediately saw it was around £3 to park. (I can’t recall the exact amount). Luckily we have Forestry membership so didn’t have to pay. We did see several cars drive in, see the “horse” and drive straight back out. Can’t blame them! The “horse” was basically a long white area with 4 legs. It could have been anything from a dog to a deer. You can no longer see a head or tail due to all the trees and undergrowth. We walked to different areas of the car park but couldn’t get a better view. We decided to take the walk to the top of the cliff in case it looked good from up there, albeit upside down, but I could have rotated the picture! We started the steep climb up the 500 million steps. After stopping and gasping for breath several times, we eventually reached the top. As a bonus, you get many nettle stings for free as they are all poking through as you approach the top. When we finally reached the top of ‘heart attack hill’ we were greeted by a bench. Thank goodness, we thought. We can sit and recover and take in the views. What views? We sat down and slap bang in front of us was a huge oak tree so we saw nothing. After getting our breath we continued walking, hopeful that we would finally see the magnificent white horse. As we came within several metres of it, we saw where B&Q dump their surplus white gravel. That’s basically what it was. An area on a cliff where some white gravel has been chucked in a vague animal shape. Over the years, much of it has been blown away and the trees and undergrowth has gone mad around it so you can’t really see what it’s supposed to be. A huge disappointment. I’ve given it 2 stars due to the circular walk on top of the cliff and the views further along, together with seeing local gliders take off. Maybe this looks good if viewed further away, but don’t bother going to the car park.

We were staying in Thirsk and decided to visit ‘the white horse’. We arrived at car park about 11am and being a nice day there were no car parking spaces left! We went further down the road and managed to park and walk back up the road. You can see most of the horse except it’s head from the car park. We walked up the steep stairs to the top, and followed the paths. It is a lovely walk with great views over the country side.

Parked at Sutton Bank, paid for parking in the shop. Short walk to see the “best view in England” and then walked towards the white horse, down the steep steps. Hard to see the view from the bottom as the bushes need a trim! We walked back up through the woods. A nice walk. Worth seeing and keep your eyes peeled when driving across the moors to see it from a distance.

Walked from the visitor centre at Sutton Bank. Gentle walk with great views! Gliders flying past overhead which are great to see.
Best place to view the horse is from a distance in the village of Kilburn on the way to it.
Nice little ice cream van at the bottom of the horse to refresh yourself after the walk.
Iconic site to see which I remember as a child so took my daughter to view it.
Great little walk too with the dog.

There are steps (with no hand rail) and it is a steep incline so would only recommend for those who are physically fit and able to complete a moderately difficult walk.
It is not suitable for those in a wheelchair or with a pushchair. The paths from the North Yorkshire Moors Centre at Sutton Bank however are paved and less steep and it also has some great views.
There are two walks recommended from the car park at 1 hour and 3 hours long.
