About
Built to a design by Mark Cooper Day as the Royal Arcade, the Charters Towers Stock Exchange operated here from 1890 until 1916. The building houses many local Charters Towers businesses and the National Trust of Queensland Don Roderick Art Gallery. A rare example of an arcade in Queensland, one with architecture adapted to climate and well-liked for its scale and barrel-vault entrance, the Stock Exchange Arcade is indicative of the rise and fall of fortune on the nineteenth century goldfield.

Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Interesting to have a look at and discover the history of the place. Not a huge amount to tell you the history of the place but visit the info centre next door and pick up the brochure that will give you a history of the place. Take some time in the bookshop a great assortment of interesting books on the area.

Loved the architecture and history in Charters Towers especially the arcade. Walk through and check out the floors to the ceiling.

Charters Towers must have been quite a town in its heyday and this historical building and other substantial old stone banks and other buildings nearby are interesting relics of its colourful past. The Arcade was smaller than I expected but is well maintained and evocative although now predominantly used as a cafe with seating in the old stock exchange floor.

From the original iron fretwork, stained glass, imposing metal gates, beautiful tiles, high closed in ceilings - what's not to love.

The fact there is a gift shop, second hand book shop and a cafe in the arcade are real bonuses!

What a beautiful venue for an evening event. I was in town for a convention and had a night function. We arrived on dusk and was beautiful. Had great catering and good service.

The building actually has quite a few shops to look at as well. It's a great old building to visit. Good local operator as well.

We had a nice half hour or so strolling round the shops of the stock exchange and looking at the interactive displays. Quirky small mining museum at the rear was interesting. Charters Towers is taking full advantage of its unique past to position itself as a town to check out for a day or so.

Home to a cafe, book shop, gift shop and other businesses, the old Charters Towers Stock Exchange Building is a fantastic example of gold rush era architecture. Beautifully renovated, it looks almost brand new. A great stop for the history buffs, or anyone in search of a quiet place to contemplate a good book, over a good coffee.

Lovely old building.

There's no shortage of classic Victorian architecture in the Towers, much of it beautifully preserved, but this one deserves a few extra moments of your attention. Australian history oozes out of every square foot of this city, it's not to be overlooked by anyone with an appreciation thereof.
