- Neil D149 contributionsReally good art museum - and free!I was impressed with art collections and curation. Most pieces had an information placard to help you understand the artist and piece. Spacious, well-presented displays. The atrium is spacious, but a bit like an airport check in area- needs more art in it. Basic admission is free - this is how all museums and art galleries should be, so that everyone is welcome to view great works of art. Definitely worth a visit.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 27 September 2023
- imrico413 contributionsFREE and a decent sizeI had this rated at 4 stars, but I changed it to 5. The museum is a good size with some very nice pieces, but the fact that its FREE for all, that puts it to a 5 for me. Now if I were comparing against the Met or the Louvre it would rank probably a 3, but once again, free art is amazing. Good for you CLE!Visited October 2023Written 17 October 2023
- jmch491Washington DC, District of Columbia117 contributionsWorth the trip! One of the best, varied collections among museums worldwide. I spent two days here, and thoroughly enjoyed visiting the permanent collection -- and the special exhibits of Degas and Suzhou (China). I took the docent tour both days, and each volunteer docent was friendly, knowledgeable, and a pleasure to tour with.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 22 October 2023
- Coastrunner10138 contributionsCleveland Must SeeThis is ranked as one of the top art museums in the U.S. and it most definitely is. Pay parking is most convenient under the museum, and admission to the museum itself is free. It is well laid out and the permanent collection is unbelievably extensive, with virtually every famous artist in history represented. Expect to spend four to six hours to see everything. The Provenance Cafe is very nice with outdoor seating in the Atrium.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 27 October 2023
- The Michael Scott Trading Company4 contributionsA treasure trove for art aficionados and culture buffs alike! From the moment you enter, you're greeted by an awe-inspiring atrium that sets the tone for the entire visit. The variety of art, from ancient to contemporary, is staggering, and there's something for everyone. The collection of Impressionist paintings, including Monet and Van Gogh, is a highlight that left me in sheer amazement. What sets this museum apart is not just the art on display, but the way it's presented – the curations and the attention to detail are top-notch. It's not just a museum; it's an immersion into the world of art, history, and human creativity. The Cleveland Museum of Art is a must-visit for anyone looking to be inspired and moved by the beauty of human expression.Visited January 2023Travelled with familyWritten 31 October 2023
- MidwestKathMDetroit, Michigan1,084 contributionsThe Cleveland Museum of Art never disappoints! Great art! Fun experience!!The Cleveland Museum of Art is such a wonderful museum that we keep an eye on their special exhibitions looking for opportunities to drive 3 hours from our home to see them. In the past several years, we've seen the The Tudors, Giacometti, and Tiffany exhibitions as well as going through the galleries, checking out the sculptures displayed outdoors and the building architecture from the original classical to Breuer and Venoly modern. Most recently we met up with another couple (who drove in 2+ hours from the opposite direction) to see the Degas Laundresses exhibition. And it was worth the drive!! This exhibition gave us the opportunity to see many Degas works on loan from museums in Europe and around the U.S. and elsewhere. Plus works by Degas' contemporaries, including Berthe Morisot, Gustave Caillebotte, Renoir, and Picasso. Truly an eye-opening show providing insights into Degas' body of work beyond his beloved Dancers and Horse Racing works. We also took in some of the small temporary gallery exhibits as well as walked through the European and Modern galleries to see favorite pieces like Monet's Water Lilies and the Abstract Expressionism works and the Art Nouveau pieces. We enjoyed lunch from the museum cafe. Museum admission is free (special exhibitions are ticketed). Parking is available for a fee in the museum garage or free on the street nearby.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 December 2023
- Teri MQ49 contributionsSurprisingly Stunning MuseumSuch an impressive museum! We found meter parking on the street and felt save. The enclosed courtyard reminded me of Europe. The cafe was affordable and offered options for various types of eaters. The gift shop was beautiful. We enjoyed the various exhibits, especially the Austrian armory. Appreciated the free entrance.Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 4 February 2024
- Tom O65 contributionsExcellent MuseumExcellent museum. Appears to be very well funded, superb public spaces and displays. Lots of attentive staff. The building alone is worth visiting. Art displays are well lit, displayed with lots of open space. World-class.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 May 2024
- Gordon S238 contributionsBest Ohio Art MuseumCleveland Museum of Art is an immersive artistic experience with astounding works on display. Their American collection has great works by Bohm, Cox, Wyeth, Wood and Hopper. There’s more with Sloan, Prendergast, Tarbell, Sargent and Chase. German works by Perchstein, Kirchner are solid but they have a fantastic work by Gabrielle Munter (titled Future). French works go beyond the standard Impressionism and have Bonnard, Vuillard and lesser-known masters on display. A giant Rousseau is great. 7 Picasso works hang in chronologic order, spanning more than 40 years and let you really see how the Spaniard evolved. Madame Lerolle is featured in two paintings, both fantastic. I enjoyed the brightest Odilon Redon flower painting here. Not a typical fan of Georgian-era art, they have a Thomas Lawrence double portrait that is the most beautiful thing you’ll see. Older work by El Greco and Zubaran are large and excellent. Knowing lots of artists, I was still happy to find someone I’d not known before: Gitane Endormie who’s “Sleeping Gypsy” is among the loveliest painting they have. I wish the gift shop had more postcards of all this art. I would have bought them all. This is the best museum in the state (and they have some awesome ones with Cincinnati, Columbus, Dayton and Toledo).Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 18 May 2024
- kleicSan Antonio, Texas1,085 contributionsExceeded ExpectationsI love art museums and had high expectations for this one ... and it far, far exceeded them. The architecture is astonishing and worth a visit alone; the glass enclosed space is so light-filled and the newer galleries are beautifully designed. The collection is diverse and not too overwhelming, the curation is thoughtful, and the special exhibitions were really engaging. If I lived in Cleveland, I'd visit often!Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 31 May 2024

Other than a parking fee ($6) this museum is free to your and is HUGE. Definitely would take more than one trip to see everything. Extensive collections of paintings from the renaissance to present day, also a ton of sculptures and pottery from different parts of the world. There is a cafe inside and a beautiful courtyard to sit in. Only thing I didn't like was that you are not allowed to bring in a water bottle.

My wife and I visited during the height of the pandemic. Things had just begun to open up again and we snagged tickets to the Museum. Temperatures taken on the way in, admissions spread out to keep the numbers low, and limits to the number of people allowed in each gallery. Very impressed and felt safe.
All that aside, the Museum's regular collection is amazing: the sculptures, armor, etc. We also caught some great special exhibits: Korean embroidery, contact sheets, Tiffany.
The place just never disappoints.

We visited the Michelangelo exhibit, which was very good. The tickets were available online for $14.00 each. The permanent exhibits cost nothing and are exceptionally well done. There is so much to see that we weren't able to take it all in during the time we had allotted.

One of our reasons for stopping in Cleveland while on vacation was to visit this fine museum. It was a good decision. It reminds me very much of the Art Institute of Chicago in its breadth and scope and is definitely a world-class institution. We arrived right when the museum opened and spent several hours wandering through the galleries, which were nearly empty. So much art and so little time. Our feet gave out before we had a chance to see everything. I must compliment the curators who thoughtfully provided information about each work and also some context or interesting tidbit of information. My favorite painting was "The Pink Cloud" by Henri-Edmond Cross and included that he was an anarchist, which was an interesting detail. We had lunch at the Provenance Cafe which offered a good selection of food at a decent price. If I get back to Cleveland, I will definitely visit this wonderful museum again.

I visited the CMA with my boyfriend and his dad, a former museum curator himself. We explored the museum over the course of two full day visits. We felt we got a good survey of the collection and we were particularly impressed with the contemporary and modern art, the Japan/Korea gallery, and the Greek and Roman/Byzantine collections. All of the galleries were beautifully designed and overall the captions are informative but not over-interpretive. The special exhibition (Michelangelo studies and drawings) was reasonably priced and lovely. Will definitely return on future trips to Cleveland.

The Cleveland Art Museum always has interesting exhibits which are well attended (frequently sell out) and appeal to varied tastes in the art world. We attended the Tiffany Glass Exhibit which was spectacular. Admission to the regular art museum exhibits is free. There is a charge for some of the rotating collections.

I was very impressed with the entire Museum and the newer aspects of the property.
It has 15 years since I last visited here. We spent 4 hours going through the entire museum starting from the early BC ages to modern times. Could spend more time depending how much you read and study.
Spacious rooms, nothing is crowded. There are Museum workers in every section. Some have knowledge of the displays, others are there for security.
You will be impressed. This is a gem for Cleveland.
Take the time to visit here.

This is an incredible art museum that offers an extensive collection of art from all periods and lands. Admission to the museum is free. There is a paid parking lot and some on street parking with meters.
Their temporary exhibits are some of the finest in the country. Some are free and some charge an entrance fee.

One of the country's best art museums, although art people will tell you that the Museum lacks a significant modern collection. If you like Egyptian, Greek and Roman, Renaissance, and other world art, it's a must-see attraction. Asian, African, and Islamic art are there too. It's a beautiful building, with a recent expansion that has added to its appeal. They have special exhibitions, a good (and pricey) gift shop, and restaurant.

CMA is outstanding and well worth the visit. The collections are superb and building architecture outstanding. For those not from Cleveland, the museum is located in beautiful park like museum campus adjacent to Case Western Reserve University. The museum docents we’re very polite and helpful. While not as large as the Met or Art Institute of Chicago, I highly recommend. The collection is robust without being overwhelming and perfect for a several hour visit (or longer). This is a highly desirable alternative to its larger, less friendly and more crowded bigger city comparable museums.

We are wondering which hotels are closest.
Written 25 July 2019
If you’re just planning on going to museum, Intercontinental and Tudor Arms are the closest. But there’s absolutely nothing around there except Cleveland Clinic. Downtown hotels would give you the opportunity to walk to many other sights and restaurants. It just depends on what you’re planning on doing in Cleveland

I would like to know if the Faberge Red Cross with Triptych will be in display May 21, 2019? I have talked to an employee by phone who said it absolutely would be. However, when I used your email address to ask the question I received a response that it would not be available any time before the end of the month. Could you please, please check this out and let me know before our visit.

I am a frequent visitor to the museum. But this question would be better directed to the museum staff. I don't walk around the whole museum everything I visit, I enjoy going often so i take my time sometimes drawing in the galleries.

I’m visiting the Infinity Mirrors exhibit September 28. Any advice on how to get the most out of our visit? Thank you.

Just seeing your post and hope you had a good time! The Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) in Toronto is going to buy one of the Infinity Mirrors exhibits so maybe that will be one of your future trips to look forward to!

Whats the food like in the cafe? Prices? My husband and I and three kids 14,13, and 3. All picky. We are coming from Detroit area and doing the Christmas Story House then going to the to the Museum of Art. I thought we could eat there or would anyone know of a family friendly lunch place nearby.
Written 28 June 2018
Thanks everyone for answering. We went and there was something for all my picky eaters. It took a little for some of the items to be made but everything tasted good. It did cost about $70 for the 5 of us to eat.

How much time should I allow for the museum?
Written 29 May 2017
If it is adults only take at least a half day and plan on lunch there. If you are bringing kids do many visits at about two hours each. If you are taking boys start with the armor court, that was my first visit in 1955. We have continued to go ever since and had a membership for decades. The museum is always free, however, there are sometimes special exhibits that require a fee and or a reservation time to see the event. The Asian and pre-Columbian sections are very interesting as well.
Written 30 May 2017
We almost always park on Martin Luther King, down the hill from CMA. Along MLK parking is free. This is not a good choice if snowy or rainy, but beautiful because you can walk by or look back at the Wade lagoon.

I am assuming that you are kidding! Cleveland Museum OF ART is a museum known around the world as having some of the finest collections of art. The Museum also features what is called "The Collection Wall" which is a 40-foot interactive digital wall which displays in real time all works of art from the permanent collection currently on view in the galleries—which is between 4,200 and 4,500 pieces of artworks at any given time. It also has digital images of art that is in storage. You might enjoy that as well as enjoying the pieces of art in the galleries.
