Worth visiting the museum here. All the ethnic groups of Assam are displayed appropriately. The artifact's are numbered but most of them are missing and the lighting is not adequate.
Otherwise the museum is well maintained. Garden at the campus is also properly kept. Light and Sound show are not are played everyday. Assam handicrafts can be found in the campus. Water fountain is nice.

This museum showcases the arts and crafts of Assam and given the condition of other buildings and collections in Guwahati, I was surprised at the clean, well maintained, well labelled museum here.

The Papier mache life size Raavan and the display of traditional dress of North East communities were my favourites.

The grounds next door often hold exhibitions and sales of local handicrafts and handlooms.

Poorly Maintained showcase of Cultures of Assam. It houses various aspects of the lives of Assamese people. Has a sprawling campus.

The Kalakshetra gives an insight into the art, culture and craft of North east India. The artifacts are well organised, arranged and adequately described. It is a must to visit while in Guwahati.

We visited Kalashetra on the penultimate day of our Northeast tour on 9th November 2017. In a crowded city of Guwagati, we were surprised to find such a large lush green garden interspersed with trees and sculptures of artists and animals besides several buildings housing different museums and art galleries. There was also a children park with toy train and an open air theater. By the time we reached the premises after completing our trips to Hajo temples and Umananda temple, it was about 4 PM and being very tired we could not visit all the places, which might take about 4-5 hours. However, whatever we saw here was a great insight into Assamese Culture and history and I recommend the tourists to have at least half a day for visiting all important activities. They are also supposed to have a light and sound show but it was not running on that day. No doubt, this complex has every thing for general public, tourists and particularly scholars studying the Assamese cultural heritage, art and history. However, it needs to be properly managed and better maintained. I have seen much smaller activities in USA but they have good guides and conducted tours for the tourists. Here we did not find any such arrangement. Further, for senior citizens and handicapped persons also there is no facility because the museums and other buildings have several floors and large distances are to be covered to visit all places. The Bhupen Hazarika museum (after the world renowned Assamese poet and singer) is a major attraction here for people from other states also. This museum houses Bhupen Hazarika's personal belongings, his creations, awards and complete information about his illustrious life but photography is strictly disallowed and before entering this small complex we had to also remove our footwear. The maintenance of Kalashetra is the major drawback and that is why I did not find many tourists here. The entry fee of Kalashetra at 30/- Rupees is just OK and can be increased if better facilities and conducted tours are arranged in batches. Further, photography is not allowed though I could take a few snaps here and there and this aspect is also discouraging to tourists. There is a a small restaurant selling veg snacks, tea, and cold drinks etc. On the whole it was a satisfying experience but I am giving it 4 star because of lack of guides and inadequate maintenance.

Situated a short auto ride away from the heart of Guwahati , the Shrimant Shankar Dev Kalakshetra showcases the culture of Assam in a nutshell. If you are passing through ,with no time to travel into the heartlands of Assam, the Kalakshetra is a fine place to imbibe a basic understanding of the culture of Assam and the Vaishnav traditions of religion and culture that where inspired by the Saint Shrimant Shankar deva.
The serene temple on the top of the hill is a beautiful replica of a traditional Assamese 'Naamghar' (Vaishnavite temple where the worship is mainly by chanting of Sri Krishna's name),where the holy epic 'Shrimad Bhagvath' is worshipped ,instead of any image ,in keeping with the teachings of Shri Shankar Deva. The dias is flanked by two exquisite wooden statues of Garuda and Hanuman in devout attendance.
The museum houses an amazing collection of masks and stage parapharnelia used to perform the religious dance dramas in the Vaishnav 'satras' or monasteries. Bakasur, Putana, Ravana and all other monsters of mythology are delightfully depicted and one only misses having seen a live performance.
The recreated 'Rong-ghar' and "joydol' on the grounds overlooking the statues of traditional buffalo fights bring to life the royal traditions of the Ahom kings.
If you happen to visit Guwahati around the festive seasons of Bihu, Sri Shankar Dev's Birthday or Republic or Independence days, do check out the program schedules as the large grounds often come alive with the artistes performing folk dances and theatres, and few experiences can beat watching a live performance in the open air amphithteatre on the grounds.

The Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra in the city of Guwahati is an exponent of the culture and art of the state of Assam. The Kalakshetra is a complex that displays the art of the state and also has the theater that hosts several cultural functions.
