A good sight seeing experience for people and children interested in bird watching.
Close to Chennai ,so easy for Chennaites.
Parking, tea shops with biscuits and cold drinks , binoculars ,paid rest rooms available
Place can be better maintained.
Make sure you visit the preview room for 10 to 15 min ,next to ticket counter before entering the sanctuary to make it a more meaningful experience .
You can spend one to one half hr there.
Apart from Lake side view, don't forget to watch to the other side on trees ,u can spot lot of rare species.( Binoculars must)
Make less noise as you walk.
Avoiding eats inside helps to maintain the sanctuary clean and does not attract monkeys which are common there ,though seem harmless.
The tower time is restricted, find out at the ticket counter.( Best view with guide and preadjusted binoculars)
Best to visit during November to March to see migratory birds.
8 am to 10.30 am is what we visited and really got see lot of species

It was on my bucket list for a while and decided to visit on a Saturday early morning.
As summer is approaching, the last lap of fog and mist around the place invited me to the lush green with the mangrove background. I was lucky to witness the sun rise and the sounds of the birds was amazing. Some Alarm calls , few begging calls , contact calls , flight calls and some singing. I fully enjoyed and would recommend people arounf chennai to check this place before the birds go back to thier homes.

Nice place to visit with family where you can see different types of migratory birds. Last year during our visit the guide was very well in explaining. This year this has become too commercial and they have put extra 5 binoculars and there is a separate ticket to view using binoculars. The persons standing there don't know what type of birds they are showing. Only one binocular that is installed by government can be moved to see the full view, all others cannot be moved, what they show you have to view.
They need to put one more tower for the bird watchers with their own binoculars.

I had been to this sanctuary on Feb13 and I could see lot of migratory birds. The whole sanctaury is full of painted storks,Asian open bill storks,Darters,Pelicans,Coromorants,Gre herons, Blackheaded ibis, sandpipers etc.I observed a pair of cute owls on top of the tree. There is another sanctuary near to this called kalikiri bird sanctuary and you can see different varieties of ducks which are resting on top of tree.Overall this time both the sanctuaries are excellent

Great bird sanctuary. MANY birds. Certainly bring binoculars, even though the birds are relatively close. The staff can be quite helpful in pointing out birds but leave a small tip. There is a path around the perimeter which is flat and easily traversable. I loved the Painted Wood Storks. There were also owls in the trees along the path, as pointed out by the staff.

Visited on 11.02.2023 early in the morning. To my surprise, not just sanctuary even the 20km car trip from the NH to bird sancturary was pleasant in the morning.
First you will like it, if you are bird lover or someone who wish to sit in silence and enjoy the nature. Before 9 not many visit and you can comfortably sit in the chairs and enjoy birding/nature.
If you are neither a bird watcher or someone who is coming in search of peace, it won't entertain you much, except few photo/selfie opportunities

Vedantangal Sanctuary provided us with a very good view of thousands of birds on trees and bushes in the lake. A very good location for a day trip from Chennai, Kanchipuram and Mahabalipuram.

A recent interest in bird photography took me to this place and it was truly wonderful.
Myself and my friend drove from Chennai and reached this place around 4PM. We were there until 6PM and then returned back. A lot of birds, and few decent clicks made this visit a good experience.

For those who need some tips on reaching this place -
From Chennai, drive on NH45 towards Trichy. This would be on the GST road in the direction of Tambaram.
Continue all the way till Chengelpet and a little more than that.
About 13 Km after Chengelpet, you will reach a crossroads, in a place called Padalam.
Turn right here and proceed 12 Km, you will reach Vedanthangal.
Keep an eye on the green-colored signboards.

You have to buy tickets for yourself, camera/videocamera and car-parking. There are a few small shops that sell some softdrinks, tea and biscuits and mineral water bottles. So you dont have to necessarily stock them.

In my opinion, this place needs just a couple of hours. So dont plan an all-day trip with kids. They will probably feel bored after an hour of excitement.
Birds will be active at dawn and dusk. So in the middle of the day, you may not see many birds active. I would recommend to visit in the evenings around 3 or 4PM.

Between November and March, you can see a variety of birds. Thats the season when you should visit.

Definitely recommended !!!
