We booked our trip to The Skelligs with John O’Shea based on a strong recommendation from my wife’s sister. John’s boat departs from Bealtra pier vs. Port Magee making it closer to Caherdaniel. His is the only boat to depart from here. We left at 7:15am an early start but it meant we were the first boat to land at Skellig Michael - important given the number of boat trips that come from Port Magee, a shorter trip. It was a wonderful experience. John and first mate are very capable seamen and we felt completely at ease with them. The crossing lasts approx. 2 hours. The weather was perfect and we spent just over 2 hours on Skellig Michael. Highly recommend visiting Skellig Michael. Go with John and you will not be disappointed!

The crossing became an unexpected dolphin showing when the skipper and his merry dogs went after them as happy boys. Still nicely on time at Skellig Michael for the guides. Great experience. Im a Dutch person myself and this was the first time I naturally felt the urge to leave a decent tip 😁

Recently had a great time on a boat trip with this tour.

The boat in easy to board with individual seating. Once out to sea you are free to walk around the deck to ensure the best chance of a sighting. For those who are fit enough there is an option to climb up top for a more panoramic view.

We were lucky enough to see loads of dolphins. A truly beautiful sight.

The two crew were courteous and kind enough to answer any questions.

However they were somewhat upstaged by their canine crew who did an excellent job as lookouts.

I would recommend this tour for a strong possibility of seeing dolphins, great views of the Caherdaniel coastline and a chance to see the best two dog canine crew in action.

I had a wonderful trip out to Skellig with John, his co-pilot, and his two dogs last week. John stopped along the way to make sure we could all see a pod of Dolphins. And when the crossing got a little rougher out passed the headland, Watson - the elder doggie, made sure I was safe and warm by choosing me as his seat :) - A true honour.

Skellig itself is wonderful and well worth the trip.

Yesterday, the 15th of August 2023, was a most perfect day spent on the L'Oursin, ably navigated with John at the helm. Exceptional sights were seen, on a most comfortable well-maintained boat, as it coursed through the sundrenched south kerry seas, passing by the bull rock, the cow and the calf islands before heading into Dursey Sound, with a stop off, for a comfort break to stretch the legs and to sample the delicious local fish and chips, with some breezy cool tunes playing in the background. The Bull island was absolutely fabulous, a sight to behold, and John gave history of the island and took great care navigating through it and around this unique gem of a destination. A boat trip with John should never be missed if staying in south kerry or seeking a day to getaway from it all. Luna and Watson, loyal companions of the seafaring crew, barked to alert passengers to the many dolphins swimming alongside the boat during the trip. John carefully steered the L'Oursin, giving ample time to everybody on board to catch a glimpse of the dolphins, enjoy the rich varied coastline and crystal waters and take in the sea air, as well as capture memories to last a lifetime. Fantastic day out. I did both the longer trip landing on Great Skellig and the shorter trip around both Skelligs afterwards with my mother. Both were wonderful. The Skelligs themselves have to be seen to be believed : amazing otherworldly islands. Fabulous views of seabirds, seals, and dolphins who came and played alongside the boat. The skipper cooked us up some fresh fish on the way back which I think was the best fish I’ve ever had. The skipper’s friendly dog came along as well and was very good at spotting dolphins 🙂

While the sea looked calm to us, the trip out was choppy, there was a fairly heavy sea spray, most passengers were under cover, but we were at the back, John offered me a rain jacket, but I declined... if I had my time over again I'd have taken the jacket! I was soaked... but dried up very quickly afterwards. There was a swell at the rock and it took a little while to get us ashore, but we always felt safe in John's hands. I would highly recommend the trip and would certainly travel with John again.

We had a wonderful trip out to the Skelligs with John, his assistant skipper and the two lovely dolphin-spotting dogs. It was quite rough on the way out, but we felt we were in good hands. It was a memorable trip, and everything was great. I would highly recommend taking a boat trip with John. He and his assistant are very helpful and knowledgeable. Apart from landing on the Skelligs, the dogs' excitement when they thought they spotted a dolphin was the highlight. Thanks for a great trip!

Great way to spend 5 plus hours, 90 min each way and 2plus hours on the island. Rough seas going out so be aware the Atlantic is rough but John knows his stuff. His two dogs are great.
