About
Green Dog separates from other commercial dog kennels at Svalbard, since our dogs are a mix between the Greenland dog and husky – and also, since our family, consisting of 2 adults and 4 children – and our guides – are living at the kennel, year round. We put dog welfare above all, so it was a natural choice to live at the kennel, to be present with our 4 legged friends, at all times. When our dogs retire, we put great effort in finding new families for them and this has resulted in many happy relationships. You can read about some of our pensioners at the blog at www.greendog.no. We offer tours with our dogs year around - on dog sledges in winter and on carts or by foot, accompanied by a happy Green Dog, in summer. To give you the best experience, our sled tours are for maximum 8 guests and everybody gets the chance to steer the dog sled. All of our tours includes coffee & biscuits and we offer a 50% discount for children up to 12 years. We look forward seeing you!

Daniel was an excellent and experienced guide, he knew what he was doing and was very professional. Although we were experiencing some strong snowstorm during the sled ride, he made the group feel very safe and turned it into a magical Arctic experience, something you can only get in Svalbard I guess. We were fully equipped, and all the suits and gears were enough to protect us from the harsh weather. After a one-hour ride (about 10km) we were invited into a warm and cozy house and had some delicious cookies and hot drinks. I strongly recommend Green Dog to anyone who wants an authentic yet safe dog sled ride in Svalbard!

In February 2020 we booked a 4hr trip for a family of four, including a 13yr old and 10 yr old.
Taya was our guide for the adventure, and looked after us from start to finish. The minibus picked us up on time from the hotel, and it is a short 10 minute drive from the town centre out to the dog yards.
We were provided with all the shoes and extra clothing we needed - but we recommend bringing the heated feet pads which you can buy in town. It's worth having an extra pair of thin gloves under the mittens you get from Green Dog.
For us, it was an added benefit of the tour that you are fully involved with fetching and harnessing the dogs before the trip, and of course returning them to their pens after the trip. All in all, on a 4 hour trip we were probably moving on the sleds for 2 hours, and the other 2 hours was for travel, dressing, sorting the dogs, and of course visiting the puppies at the end.
We fully recommend Green Dog. We booked via Hurtigruten Svalbard.

While I wasn't expecting much in the dark winter from this dog sledding, It turns out completely opposite:
Actual experience starts with prompt pick up from your stay itself, where our Guide - Daniel, welcomes greatly and immediately creates a well relatedness letting you feel being with a friend and at the same managing professionally.
On arrival, after putting-on provided warm suitable cloths, we get to see and hands-On for sled preparations.
Instructions, briefing and Guidances is excellent and during the sledding, I got the chance to lead on my own and also by Daniel.
He was patient and generous to take pictures following regulations.
Overall Sledding experiance with Green dog
Is excellent and very fun!
I would highly recommend, also especially Greenland Dogs are unique in there pwn way which also I understand during this tour itself.
In the end, we had a great Closure with warm drinks and waffles and nice discussions.
Please go ahead with Green Dog Svalbard!
You get infact more than what Actually promised on website :)

We wish to thank Green Dog and the fantastic guide Jan Hvizdal for three incredible days together with 20+ polar dogs which we came to love. From the moment we were picked up at our hotel in Longyearbyen on a Monday morning and until we returned at the hotel Wednesday afternoon, we enjoyed Jan’s inexhaustible well of knowledge on dog sledding, polar dogs and the Arctic. With no previous experience in dog sledding, we were quite excited to see how we would manage the sledge and the dogs. No need to worry, as Jan gave detailed and understandable instructions upon start and with more details revealed during the trip. It was really fun to learn how to control the sledge and how to put on harnesses and connect and disconnect the dogs to the gangline, tugline and neckline.
As a former Svalbard guide, I also noticed and appreciated his concern for safety and our comfort and well being as the no. 1 priority all the time. Bringing tourists into the Arctic puts a lot of responsibility on the operators and their guides. This starts with information and preparing the tourists on what they will meet, what they need to bring, clothing, how they are expected to interact with the group and the dogs, how to behave in case of polar bear encounters and so on. All this was excellent taken care of by Green Dog in advance and by Jan before start and when we were underway.
We will also like to give credit for the composition of the trip, the route with different terrain, the visit to Scott Turner glacier and the ice cave, the cozy hut in Foxdalen, the wide Sassendalen, the narrow canyon entrance to Eskerfossen (frozen waterfall) with challenging passages, and finally the last night in the luxurious Juvahytta, with electricity, comfortable beds and even sauna (which we enjoyed!).
Last, and not to forget was the ability to get in contact with the dogs, experience their different personalities, feed them and cuddle them. Fantastic aninmals!
This trip was The Experience of our lifetime, and we already miss the dogs and our group. Thanks again Jan and Green Dog - please bring hugs to Curry, Rain, Long John, Texas, Vida, Twitch(?), Shark, Garlic, Hazel, Moron and the rest of the bunch.

It was our first time at Svalbard and diffently not the last time! Green Dog Svalbard made our trip unforgettable, exciting and fun.
We can highly recommend a visit to Green Dog, as they act professionally and take good care of you and give you an experience you will never forget.
If you want to support a place where it is really clear that the dogs are well and living in good conditions with lots of love from the staff, you should choose to go on a trip with Green Dog Svalbard.
Especially 4 guides made our days special because we were allowed to help look after the dogs and experience a daily life with them and we felt very comfortable and safe in their custody.
Many thanks to Daniel, Issi, Mikkel and Mads!

If you love dogs, nature and the arctic landscape, you must try this experience. It’s a life changer and definitely worth it! First you meet up with the guide and the rest of your group for the day, then you dress up and meet the dogs (every single one of them is extremely friendly and loves to be petted: you instantly fall in love with them).
Our guide was extremely professional, proficient and visibly in love with her job: she briefed us on everything we needed to know to drive our own sled and then we attached the dogs to the sled. You could see how happy they were to go for a ride!
The trip was gorgeous and the visit in the ice caves was spectacular.
I would recommend having extra socks for when you return to the base camp just in case it rains/snows and you get a bit wet (I have to say though that the suits, boots and gloves provided by Green Dog are excellent in keeping you warm and dry).
Definitely worth the journey up here, it’s been an experience that I’ll remember for life and I’ll be forever grateful to Green Dog for their excellent job and the love and respect they have both for the dogs and for nature in general.

Just returned to Denmark after 5 amazing days on Svalbard.
We were a big family of 13 people (grandparents, children and grandchildren aged from 76yrs to 12yrs) who visited Green Dog 20th October.
Kudos to Green Dog Svalbard for an amazing experience riding a dog sleigh on wheels.
Everyone in the group felt secure and confident and the ride were well organised all the way from pick up at the Hotel in Longyearbyn to the camp were we got equipped with good quality clothing (boots, gloves and clothes) and back to the hotel again.
Before the ride we helped putting the dogs (they were very friendly and eager to get out running) in line, after a good instruction on how to steer the sleigh off we took on an amazing trip. We stayed mainly on the road due to lack of snow at this time of the year, this however didn’t change the fact that we all enjoyed the experience. After the ride and after putting the dogs back to their "house" we drove the the camp where hot drinks and waffles were prepared for us. Here we got the chance to say hi to some of the puppies. All together a great experience from finish to the end.
Once again kudos to Green Dog Svalbard for making this trip possible and for delivering a high quality experience with happy healthy dogs in a difficult (I imagine) post COVID-19 period.

We booked the 3-day mini expedition into the Adventdalen, with two overnight stays in cabins, plus a visit to the ice cave in the glacier. Our guide, Didi, was absolutely superb. She was a real expert in every respect and worked so hard to deliver a truly wonderful customer experience. The weather conditions were mixed, with some poor weather, but that didn't detract in any way. The dogs were beautiful and I was awestruck at how hard they worked. The Foxdalen cabin was really cosy and quite 'rustic', while the larger lodge near Eskerdalen was quite luxurious and very relaxing. Brandy and waffles, plus a chance to meet the sled dog puppies back at base in Bolterdalen was a magical way to end. Sincere thanks again to Didi, our sled dogs and the whole team at Green Dog for delivering a magical experience.

This was my second time having a dog sledding trip with Green Dog and I can't say anything but good about this company and their dogs.
Both times the tours were absolutely amazing, and you can feel the enthusiasm of the guides and of the people who run the company. It's a way of life that really go beyond their job.
Jan was my guide today and two years ago as well, and he is an incredibly passionate guide with a lot of experience in many wild places. You will never feel unsafe with him.
The dogs are sweet, well behaved and happy. Used to spend time with people and super excited to pull the sledges, which is part of their instinct!
It's nice to see them in the wild, not forced to be "humanized" and living as this kind of animals should actually live.
In the briefing you will be taught how to drive the sledge, as well as how to behave and co-work with the dogs. Also, you will have time to interact with them, which makes the trip not something that you just buy and participate in as an outside observer.
Moreover, all this happens in an absolutely breathtaking landscape!
There would be a lot more to say, but the best suggestion is.. just try it! You won't be disappointed:)

We went on a two day trip to the Foxdal cabin with Daniel as our guide. From the very beginning it was a very good and safe experience. We went two sleds, and he always had an eye on the sled behind his, and he made sure that everybody had a great trip.
We started out with a tour to the glacier, where we went into an ice cave. He guided us through, with storytelling about some interesting facts about the glacier.
Afterwards we drove to the cabin, where we stayed overnight. Very chill, and Daniel really made an effort to make sure that we all enjoyed our selves and had a good time.
The morning after he included us in the preparation of the dogs and getting everything ready. On the way home from the cabin to the yard, we took a trip around a mountain, which was a beautiful way to finish off the adventure.
Our trip started and ended at Green Dog Svalbard, which we could not have been happier about.
They are very professional in the way they handle everything, and it was obvious that the dogs were very happy, and got treated in the best manner possible!

I am looking for dog sled trips anywhere from March 21 till March 27, 2024. I am traveling solo, so it would be better if I could sign up for a tour that already has met the minimum number of people. Do you have a list of available tours and prices? I will be staying at Haugen Pensjonat Svalbard hotel.
Thank you,

Hi,
I'm going on this tour tomorrow morning, and was wondering how physically exerting it is. I have wheezing, and was not able to go for one of my ice cave tours today because it involved a lot of climbing uphill. I was wondering if the same thing happens in this tour.
I read that you need to push the dog sled uphill, and I was wondering how long this usually takes.
Any information would be appreciated.
Thank you !

I am interested in joining a 3 day Green Dog Tour in February 2018, what part of the month is the better date to join a tour? I have just read that in Feb the tour was in total darkness a lot of the time. I am interested in experiencing the Blue Light. How far ahead do you need to book a tour?
Written 23 April 2017
Hei there
If you wish to experience blue light , then February is definently the best month for visiting. We get 40 mins more light pr day, so theres a big difference in start/end of February. However, the Blue light is best in the beginning of February. We have Maximum 5 guests pr multiday trip and we already start getting bookings now, so its a good idea to book early.
Best Greetings,
