The tour was great. We had wonderful weather - which helps a lot - however it was Julian and Shane who made this a worthwhile experience: selecting the route, trying their best to have tourists and travellers alike learn and enjoy and... Benefit. We met Humpback and Beluga and we saw ice floating after having seperated from a glacier - listening to the two as they share knowledge and relatable stories.... LOVED it!

MIND-BLOWING! Quite simply one of the best day trips I've ever been on. My mum and I took the day trip on 24th August with Better Moments to Ny Alesund - the most "northerly town in the world" and we are still talking about it now. Brilliant from start to finish. The journey was amazing (it's a long one, 4-5 hours each way by nippy boat) and the wildlife and arctic scenery we saw was out of this world (including polar bear, walrus, humpback whale, minke whale, dolphin, arctic fox, reindeer, puffin, glaciers etc the list goes on) but what truly made the trip was our guide, Marcos, and the captain, Julian. We were so lucky as they were the perfect duo! We nicknamed Marcos "Duracell" as he had endless energy, passion, knowledge and enthusiasm - even after an almost 13 hour day he and Julian were pointing out a Humpback whale and ensuring we all got a chance to stop and marvel at it. The only complaint is that everything else we did afterwards was tame by comparison - nothing could beat that day! I totally recommend booking with this operator - and maybe you'll get lucky and have Marcos and Julian to expertly look after you.
Very important to book well in advance (months) as there are only about 10-12 spaces on this trip which makes it more personal, plus there are only a few trips per week in summer months. Well worth the cost. Oh and Marcos is also a fantastic photographer - so any camera buffs are in good hands (check out his website: www.marcossobral.com) . Thanks gents for making some really special memories for me and mum!

We had an entertaining, educational and wonderful trip with Marcos as our guide on a walrus safari. I don’t know when I have enjoyed a guide more on a tour. We saw walrus, arctic terns and calving glaciers, heard stories of life in Longyearbyen and thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon.

My wife and I went on a day trip to Ny Alesund with Better Moments. Our guide Marcos picked us up at the accommodation. He and our captain Matts are really nice guys! It was a full-day trip of more than 10 hours with a warm lunch (tasted very good). The boat was cozy, and we saw a lot of wild animals on the way to Ny Alesund, especially dolphins, a lot of dolphins, just surrounding our boat. The nature views at Ny Alesund are amazing, 100% recommend this trip! :-) Last thing: we engaged at Ny Alesund, the northernmost human settlement!

Excellent time in Svalbard!
We did the wild life safari boat tour and it was excellent. We saw a walrus, minke whales, beluga whales & numerous bird species. Bjorn our Captain and Marcos was amazing! They made an effort to make sure we could see as much as possible. Marcos was very thorough and knowledgeable about the area and the animals. He answered all our questions and was excellent. I highly recommend taking a tour with Marcos and Bjorn!

We did two tours with Better Moments. The captains choice and the walrus tour. Both were fabulous. We saw lots of wildlife, spectacular glaciers and amazing scenery. Svalbard lived up to our expectations and more. Can’t wait to go back! No polar bears but otherwise perfect.

Really amazing time on two tours with better moments. We did Icebreaker:kayak in the glaciers with Matt and Ny-Alesund with Sean. Really amazing tours. And both tour guides were super informative and helpful. Food was amazing and they serve the best brownies on boat. The trip is incomplete without their bubbly and beer on board !
Kayak in the glacier: super tour, super amazing experience! We spent 2-3 hours really paddling up and close to the glaciers. Matt was super helpful and took us along despite being the slowest paddlers in the group!
Ny-Alesund: long tour. 4-5 hours boat ride one way! But its a bucket list thing! You are visiting the northern most settlement in the whole world! We saw amazing wildlife - humpback, fin whales, minke whales, dolphins, arctic fox! Super amazing trip
They have an amazing boat

Hello together.. I will be in Svalbard end February/beg March next year. At the moment we are looking for a day trip. Our wish is to see wild animals (especially polar bears). There are so many offers/trips and for me its very difficult to consider which is the best offer. As we are talking about quite a lot of money it shall be worth it. Its clear that nobody can guarantee that, but the chances are maybe different. Thats why i would like to ask you for your advice/experience and hints. Can you pls support me? Many thanks in advance.

Hello. First of all, I am not a Svalbard local, just someone who visited last March, so probably other people can offer you better advice. Still, here it goes. I did a trip to the East Coast, to Spitsbergen, with the company called Better Moments As. Apparently, the chances of seeing a polar bear are higher there. I was unlucky and did not see any, but I had a super commited guide and a great experience that day. I totally left with the feeling that I had done my best to see polar bears. I have to add that, even if I did not see them, the landscape that I encountered was the most spectacular thing I have ever seen. I also saw that day the only bird that you can apparently encounter in Svalbard, rare as well. Alternatively, there seems to be chances if you take a boat to Pyramiden, on a glacier that you encounter on the way. I took the other typical boat trip, to Barentsburg, but I could not come close to its correspondent glacier due to strong winds that day, which made navigation tough. Concerning more fauna, even if there are specific trips to see Arctic fox, for example, you can also see them if you are lucky on other trips (motorbike, sledging...). And about summer animals no idea, but I believe you may be able to see other birds, walrus and maybe whales. Best of luck on your trip and enjoy the breathtaking islands!
Hi, has anyone been on a trip to the arctic in July/August? If so, can anyone give me tips on footwear, having great difficulty in this area. Also, having conflicting information on depth of water when stepping into water from the zodiacs. If anyone can help, it would be much apricated. Many thanks

Dear Carol. From us we generally recommend tall mountainering shoes - they should be able to withstand a few seconds dip of a few centimeters of water.
Our goal is to transfer from the zodiac and onto the beach completely dry, but there may of course be some waves/swells that wash up during this operation.
Planning a trip to Svalbard in July this year, just wondering is this the best time to go for optimum chance of seeing bears (knowing this can not be guaranteed. Has anyone been during the months of June/July?

Hey Carol! As you say, we can never guarantee wildlife, but we do see polar bears among other wildlife quite regularly throughout the summer. I would highly recommend our Catch of the Day for this :)
Feel free to drop us an e-mail at info@bettermoments.no for help with planning your adventure,

Hi,
Having read all these positive comments, I feel super enthusiastic about the idea of being able to book with you!
Allow me to contact you, my name is Mélanie and I will be going to Svalbard for the first time in March.
It is very complicated to organize when the diversity of tours and the multitude of tour operators to decide, especially since the budget is important I will not want to be wrong ....
I saw that you are doing the snowmobile excursion on the east coast to see the polar bears, is it recommendable?
I hesitate between the 3 day excursion on the east coast and that of 10H, is there really a difference when it comes to the distance and therefore the probability of seeing the bears? If we leave 10 hours or 3 days?
Is the East Coast or the West Coast more advisable when it comes to landscapes and wildlife?
Thank you to you and very happy celebrations for this end of the year ! =)

Dear Melanie
Thank you for reaching out to us. East coast is usually the better one for wildlife. I am not sure which trip you are referring to as a 3 day excursion so it is a bit hard for me to compare.
Drop me an e-mail at info@bettermoments.no and include your time of arrival and departure and we can look at making a nice program for you :)
All the best and a happy new year to you as well

Hej.

What type of boat does Better Moments use for the trip to Ny Alesund? Was it heated? Comfortable? Stable or very bump?

I am looking at booking both Catch of the Day and Walrus Safari. Is there enough difference between the two since you apparently may see walruses on Catch of the Day? Also regarding the snowmobile trip, is it worth doing in mid June given it is summer? Thank you for any feedback.

I did both Catch of the Day and the Walrus Safari, and I did see walrus on BOTH. The big difference was on the Walrus Safari, we were able to land on the beach and walk close to the walrus, about 15 meters away, which was a great thrill, though it took a lot of time on the boat to get there - it was a full day boat ride for 20 minutes with the walrus. It is a tough call, because you can take the Catch ride and not see any wildlife, or you can get lucky and see bears and walrus and whale, while getting close to the sea-ice and glaciers, while the Walrus safari is pretty much a sure-thing to spot walrus. If I had to choose one, I would choose the Catch of the Day, but you cant go wrong with either!

Hi we are looking to visit Longyearbyen in January 2019 and are very keen to complete a whale watching trip as we were unable to do one on our previous visit, is this a good time to see them and what are the best tours please? Many thanks

Hi Mountiem,
I am sorry to say we don't offer boat trips in the dark season. The sun does not go above the horizon in January so we only offer shorter snowmobile trips with focus on Northern lights. The whales is most common to see in Tromsø this part of the year, so I recommend to stop a day or two in Tromsø on the way to us.
Best regards

Hello,
Is there a good chance to see walruses and polar bears by end of August/ early September?
BetterMoments
Longyearbyen, Norway
Good morning,
Sorry for the late answer.
Walruses leave Svalbard by the beginning of August so you won't see them or the chances are tiny.
It's also not the best time to spot Polar Bears, even if it's always hard to see them, this time of the year you'll have to be really lucky :)
But it happens that we spot them on our boat trips. It really depends.
Let me know if you need anything else.
