About
Pensthorpe is the ultimate destination for discovery. Our staggering 700-acre site includes four fabulous gardens and a species-rich nature reserve. Take a trail through wetlands and hedgerows, woodland and riverbanks, and farmland and water meadows. And duck into a bird hide along the way to get up close with feathered friends. There are awesome activities for little nature lovers too. From our impressive outdoor eco-friendly play area, WildRootz, to rope bridges and snaking slides inside Hootz House. Enjoy a ride off-road on the Pensthorpe Explorer and check out fascinating fossils in the Discovery Centre. Finally, don’t forget to wet your beak at our café and stop in our shop for wildlife books, toys, bird feeders, and local produce. Ideally located, close to Fakenham, Pensthorpe makes for an action-packed outing for the whole family. It’s where little adventures happen every day, and every visit helps Pensthorpe Conservation Trust save declining bird species.

More like a crèche than a nature reserve!
Yet another visit that felt like being in a children’s playground! When are management going to realise that this is first and foremost a nature reserve and that by always trying to attract families and children they are spoiling the place for nature lovers and losing sight of what this place is about. I have been visiting for years and over the last year or so I’ve seen many changes which I feel are for the worse. I used to be able to spend all day here but slowly my favourite elements of the park have been taken away and it doesn’t feel the same anymore, meaning that my visits now are no more than 2 or 3 hours. There used to be a tv in the waiting area of the shop which played a nature video, there also used to be quite an interesting display of how the area would have looked when there was a settlement there thousands of years ago. This has all rather disappointingly been taken away. I don’t think I’ll be renewing my membership next year.
Hi Emma, Thank you for your support in visiting and subsequent review. Sorry to hear you feel we are steering away from our roots. Sharing and nurturing nature is and always has been at the core of everything we do, hopefully we find the balance and part of that is inspiring the next generation at the reserve to love nature as much as we do, so we can bring the next generation of enthusiasts through. We are always reviewing our offering, and hope with 700 acres of reserve to explore there's still plenty of areas to explore and enjoy. We're currently working on opening up some new seasonal routes on the reserve which haven't been walked before, which we're really excited to share with our members and visitors. Thanks again, and I hope we will see you again soon Best Wishes,

    Disappointing
I have been visiting Pensthorpe for over 20 years and the last few years it has slowly become less attractive for Birds Watchers and Photography. Every year it has always been a must go back and every year the amount of birds seems to have reduced. There are always plenty of walks and wild birds to see, but the enclosures where it has been possible to get up close to many wild species have reduced in numbers over the years, again making it less attractive, and unfortunately due to the current bird flu risk, the main enclosure is also closed, which I wasn't aware of until I had paid and entered the park. Disappointing visit this year
Hello, Thank you for taking the time to write a review for Pensthorpe. We are sorry to hear you were disappointed with your recent visit to the reserve. Over the past few years, with 2022 being one of the worse in the UK to date, we have lost a number of birds to avian influenza, which has also affected many reserves across the UK (and the world). This has meant that during certain periods of the year, our collection birds have been off from public viewing/visiting/feeding due to the restrictions put in place by the governing body DEFRA, you can read the complete information on our website including information about the closure of our wader aviary, flamingo updates and feeding the wildlife. These restrictions have been in place across the UK since November 2022 and have now lifted on April 18th 2023, which means we are able to reopen those enclosures which have been closed and hopefully welcome you back for another visit to us soon. Best Wishes,

    Excellent wild life centre.
We had a very great day out here. The park is well laid out and the trails are easy to follow with good information beside them. The bird watching areas have well presented hides and are quite spacious with useful information on the walls. Information on recent bird and dragon flies is kept up to date. There are a variety of activities going on all day for children ranging from climbing areas, shelter making , pond dipping. The cafe had a range of both hot and cold food at very reasonable prices and was kept spotlessly clean. Would strongly recommend this park.
Hello, Thank you for your lovely review, so pleased you had a nice time and it's lovely to hear all our teams hard work is recognised, so thank you! We hope to see you again soon! Best Wishes,

    Great day out.
Still great value for money, we had two great days at Pensthorpe during our weeks holiday in September. The café was a little unorganised this time, but who cares when there are so birds that need photographing. We see something new here each time over our four visits, even with our restricted mobility.
Hello, Thank you for your feedback, I am pleased you enjoyed your day and were able to utilise our electric mobility scooters, that's great news! Best Wishes

Excellent full day out for bird enthusiasts and for beautiful walks
Went with my partner and 9 year old daughter who is a bird enthusiast. We had a great time , shame it rained for about hour but timed it well with pumpkin carving just made the outdoor play area too slippery buy can't be helped. We went for the birds and views and walks and had rain gear on so we were fine! Great food in cafe and lovely gift shop. Excellent full day out for us thank you!
Hello, Thank you for your kind feedback, so pleased to hear you all had a nice day out with us, that's certainly our aim. We look forward to welcoming you back again soon

Great day out. Rain or shine!!
We visited on a very blustery day with our two children. It's was very quiet, we felt we had many areas mainly to ourselves. Cafe was great, lots of choice and Vegi options. Loads of cool birds. While away the hours with a hot drink while the children enjoy the indoor and outdoor play areas. Every staff member we spoke to was friendly. Nice gift shop. It's a bit on the pricey side. Tickets for two adults and two children came to £58. But then again we were easily there for three hours and didn't get round to the sculpture garden as the kids were tired! Well worth a visit

    North Norfolk Pole a Disappointment
We visited Pensthorpe for their North Norfolk Pole Santa experience. Unfortunately we found it overall quite disappointing. I have visited before to go to the nature reserve which is brilliant, the tickets for the Santa experience do not include this but you can “top up” on the day to also visit the reserve. We didn’t do this as the weather was extremely foggy, so wouldn’t have been worth it for us. Good aspects include children getting to pick a gift from the workshop, rather than being given a wrapped gift they may not be interested in. Not too big a group, so it wasn’t overwhelming. It starts with everyone sitting on tables in a marquee and a “show” between Santa and his elves, which was full of bad jokes and chat and went on for too long. Additionally my children couldn’t see the stage, it would’ve been much better to bring all the children to the front so they could feel more involved/actually see what was going on. The show was like bad panto, a little cringe worthy in places, I wasn’t convinced anyone was having a really good time. Then came the crafts, while some families had their turn to see Santa, the children made tree decorations out of wooden plaques, pens, feathers etc. then iced gingerbread men. That was good! I was under the impression they would be making “reindeer food” too, but instead they were just handed pre made bags which are actually the feed they sell on entry to the reserve, so that was a shame. It felt like then we were in limbo for a little while waiting for our turn to be called up to the stage, and when we did get up there it was a quick “do you want a photo?” And move on. No basic questions like “what would you like for Christmas? Have you been naughty or nice so far this year?” However, Santa was a convincing one looks-wise, so that was something. As mentioned, being lead through to the workshop to pick the gift was good. The elves were very friendly and chatty, they periodically came around to tell jokes, have a chat with the children, although maybe too often. It would’ve been nice to offer refreshments as part of the ticket price, we have done other experiences that have mulled wine/mince pies/hot chocolate etc available, it just didn’t feel as festive as we’d hoped! Hopefully next year some improvements can be made. Sadly this will be our first and last visit to the North Norfolk Pole. We’ll be back for the nature reserve at least.

Visited the North Norfolk Pole on Sunday and had a great time, the children and us enjoyed the slap stick story, then a lovely natural craft and gingerbread to decorate. The marquee was nice and warm. Overall a great time had and lovely to see the smiles on the children’s faces l. Thank you Pensthorpe.

Had a great time at the North Norfolk Pole, our children really enjoyed the activities and choosing their own toy in the shop! Santa and his elves were very engaging and fantastic Santa knew a fact about the children. All in all a wholesome family day, thank you!

We came to visit Santa in December 2022 and it was a wonderful experience. So when we saw this North Pole experience advertised we were very keen to get tickets. However, the experience this year was nothing but a disappointment and one that I wouldn’t buy again nor suggest others doing. It all started with having to find some room round a table to even be able to sit as a family. It then when on to the story time with Santa - which was actually a very bad panto. It was full of bad jokes - of which our children had no idea what was going on. I was under the impression it was going to be a story told by Santa himself - getting the children immersed in the idea of Christmas, sitting closer around Santa to get them involved. But instead we were sat around like school children struggling to understand what was going on and to hear anything and with the children not seeing anything. We were then handed a craft bag of a wooden plaque and some feathers to decorate - it wasn’t really what I was expecting with it being a woodland decoration we were supposed to be making. The gingerbread decorating was okay.. but again our bag didn’t contain everything we needed so we had to ask for icing. Then we were handed a bag of “reindeer” food - which was actually just a bag of duck feed you can buy from the shop - we were told we would be making the “food”. THEN! It was time for out “personal encounter” with Santa - which actually didn’t feel like that at all. We were just called to the front - after the elves had NO IDEA where each family were sat, so we’re going around shouting family names at each table - it really took the magic away - where’s last year you arrived and it felt magical - they knew exactly who you were, the children and their likes and favourite toy. Santa didn’t ask any traditional questions.. and we were rushed on after a photo was taken. By this point we had enough and wanted to go get the children their gift and go home. We were told we HAD to wait! We waited ages for everyone to finish with Santa - THEN we were one of the last to leave. Waited in line for people to go in and choose their gifts, but when it came to our turn, we were in their with 2 other families so the children were unable to really look around at all the toys on offer, so it was a quick grab and go. Over all a very disappointing visit and event. Came away feeling very deflated and that we had just been to school instead of a lovely family event.

We brought out 2 grandchildren aged 5 and 2 to see santa and do the experience. They enjoyed the story told by jingles and jangles and loved meeting santa. They got to do crafting (made Christmas baubles, decorated ginger bread men which had the option of being dairy free/vegan so our little 2 year old could do one too with the help from grandad) . They also were given reindeer food to bring home too. It was lovely that the elves and santa were fully interactive with everyone there . It was lovely to here them telling mummy and daddy all about it 😍

North norfolk pole experience was energised and engaging. Children aged 9 and 8 loved it. Enjoyed the cafe with good range of options for dietary requirements.

Good, clean toilets. Well signposted. Lots to see. I would be happy to recommend.
