How can an Elizabethan manor house still exist in Barking. Absolutely Amazing! Well eorth a visit. And a cafe as well. Catch the guided tour if you can. Free and really interesting.

Eastbury is a surprising gem set in the middle of a housing estate that surprises with both the quality of its architecture and the warmth of welcome from the volunteers and staff. From the excellent, informative tour to the relaxing atmosphere of the cafe and orchard garden seating, this is well worth a visit. Whilst a National Trust property, the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham have made good use of the well maintained space, including exhibitions and good historical explanations of the origins of the house and Tudor life generally. This includes Shakespearean re-enactments and the chance to try historical clothing, school tours and a wide range of other community engagement activities.

The exterior is wonderful Elizabethan architecture & well restored. The interior is also well restored and interesting though somewhat small , with original fireplaces & beams etc. What I couldn't escape was the surrounding area. It's surrounded by a big council estate literally 20 paces from the front door. The area would of been wonderful but it's been ruined & this house only reminds one how ugly housing looks like .

On a beautiful day, we visited the house and were given a guided tour by a very knowledgeable member of staff/volunteer. The highlight of the day, was the food. My partner has Coeliacs disease, so can only eat gluten free. The Chef ensures that there is plenty of suitable food for her, and he does cater for all other of the varied dietary requirements. For such a relatively small concern it really punches its weight, putting many larger places to shame!
