About
Cider Mill & Tap Room Based in Stisted, The Big Bear Cider Mill is nestled in the North Essex countryside. Making quality cider that’s modern and vibrant they are challenging the perceptions of both Essex and cider! The Big Bear has regenerated a disused gravel pit into a flourishing Orchard with over 3000 trees of 20 different varieties; their bees naturally propagate the pesticide fee Orchard. In 2020 Essex Gold Rush was launched. A clear, golden, vegan, sparkling cider with a clean apple taste. Drinking apples, sourced locally, packaged in cans makes their cider one of the most sustainable alcoholic drinks you can consume.

We visited as part of a family party that Mark hosted. The cider was so much nicer than the mainstream brands and waking with a clear head is testament to its natural products! It’s a lovely location in a beautiful part of the world too.

We had an amazing visit with friends. Our friends has bought the experience as a birthday present for my husband. What a birthday present!!

Kathryn and Mark were wonderful hosts. We were offered to take a seat and served with a glass of cider. Once everyone else had arrived, Mark took us to the orchard and gave an informative talk and then took us on a tour of the processing building. After this we were invited to go back to our seats where a sample platter was served of the different ciders they make. I was the driver for the day and they were very hospitable in catering me with soft drinks. Lunch was then served which was an amazing cheese board …. huge and delicious!! This was then followed by homemade brownies and shortbread. You certainly won’t leave hungry. A constants flow of ciders were served throughout, of which you are able to purchase from the shop to take home with you.

I highly recommend a visit.

When we drove through the gate into the orchard, it was very quiet. We parked up wondering what to expect.
The cider was offered instantly and then more people arrived. I think there was 16-20 people, and a bit of friendly chat and banter was flying around the tables. Then we had the tour of the Orchard, and cider mill, and the big bear and his wife were very knowledgeable and made it fun.
Back to the tables, tasting cider platter, more cider (the flat one was my favourite, higher %) and the most humongous cheese platter which was absolutely gorgeous. What started out as a very ordinary day turned out to be brilliant. We loved it.

When we arrived I have to admit that we were a bit concerned. Difficult to find entrance and weird car park….but then everything else was absolutely brilliant. Of course it helped to have a constant supply of great cider but our hosts Kathryn and Mark were brilliant!! We have a tour around orchard snd then into the processing building. All good. But then out to what I thought was going to be a light selection of cheeses. It was the best cheese board ever!! And that pickle!! Yum!! But the best of course was sampling all the different ciders both still and sparkling. We hope to bring a load of our friends over next time!! Thanks so much for making it an incredible day xx
