About
Welcome to your new-look Curlew. We've been fully redesigned and refurbished. The interior is spacious and beautiful. Looking more like a traditional pub, we have captured the heritage and charm of a traditional pub but with a modern colour scheme and heritage lighting. We now offer more seating, a multi use restaurant, a wider range of drinks and pool table. We are now a family run, family friendly, community pub. Positioned in the centre of a community, we aim to be the beating heart. We welcome everyone. Alongside our famous Shepherd Neame beers, we have international lagers, traditional cider, a wide selection of wines and spirits. New to The Curlew is our range of coffees and teas. These are served all day with a choice of tempting biscuits, cakes and muffins. Our coffee is Rainforest Alliance certified and roasted in East Anglia. It tastes great and travels a short distance so you can enjoy it knowing that it's fresh and rewarding for everyone in the production cycle. We will be providing food very soon, so like us and you will be the first to know when our menu is released. As we have been redesigned, we welcome the addition of a function suite. This can be hired free (T's & C's apply) for any event. Full details available upon request 01245 690470.

I should, perhaps, begin by declaring an interest.
'The Curlew' is my 'local', it lies a ten minute walk from home (although maybe fifteen minutes back). I attended on the night it opened (back in October 1988) and, as a firm believer in 'use it or lose it', I have drunk in 'The Curlew' at least once a week (vacations excepted) since 1988.
I used to run - with my mate Jon - General Knowledge quizzes on Thursday evenings for over ten years.
Over the past nearly thirty years 'The Curlew' has had what could be described as a 'patchy' history, probably ten different sets of hosts have stood behind the bar, and while it's never been a bustling pub, somehow it's survived until now.
The future now looks bright, Shepherd Neame undertook a major refurbishment late in 2016 and the newly refurbished interior is more welcoming with 'heritage' lighting and new dark wood furniture.
Part of the bar can now be isolated, and is available for parties and functions. It’s used by local groups for meetings, providing a much-needed ‘community hub’ in the south-west of the Town.
Different hosts have tried different food offerings over the years, ranging from cheesey chips, burgers, and 'East End Pie & Mash', through full roast dinners.
The new hosts (Russ & Louise) announced recently that a new chef (Lee) was joining the team - from a well respected Essex restaurant - and that they would be offering quality, locally sourced food, with provenance.
I took my daughter and her husband down a few weeks ago to try lunch, and we enjoyed wonderful burgers, all with triple cooked chips, my beef-burger topped with bacon and locally smoked cheese (I know the guy who smokes the cheese for them), with a delicious homemade chilli jam.
I’ve also taken the opportunity to try the Sunday Roast dinners, the pub is getting increasingly busy; for the first time in nearly thirty years it’s becoming necessary to book.
My Falafel starter was tasty, with a roast tomato dip, my main course of Roast Beef with all the trimmings was delicious.
The Beef was tender and tasty, the roast potatoes crispy on the outside but fluffy on the inside, and the side vegetables fresh and well-cooked.
The dessert - Honeycomb & Chocolate cheesecake? Well as I’ve written here on many occasions, I don’t ‘do’ desserts, but I enjoyed a taster a few weeks ago and it was little short of amazing. My lunchtime companion - who’d also ordered the cheesecake simply said “Wow!”.
So, a true local pub with welcoming hosts, a good selection of beer and exotic spirits and excellent food.

We have lived in Woodham Ferrers for many years, more than 30 in fact. Years ago, we used to occasionally look in at the Curlew with our young boys. They did food some time ago.
But the pub stopped doing meals and became more of a drinkers pub. It was tied to a brewery too limiting its choice of beers. It became a bit run down and tired in its decor.
A while back, it changed hands again but this time it is no longer tied as far as I know. The interior has been completely redecorated and it now looks quite contemporary. They have also recently started serving food again and there have been good revues locally on Facebook.
My wife and I decided to give it a visit and try the food.
There is a seperate small restaurant area that is away from the bar, seperated by two glass doors. But here's a problem. The doors are permanently open and all that happens in the bar area is easily heard from the restaurant. It is still a drinkers bar and some of the clients used loud bad language. I'm not a prude but eating with my wife was a bit embarrassing. I would not want to be there with young family or friends.
The food we ordered was however delicious. Freshly cooked to order. Prices are about what you would pay elswhere. Liver and bacon with mash and seasonal vegetables was £12. Total bill for two main meals and two coffees was £26.
Service was a bit slow however. It took 30 minutes from ordering to being served. Thee was only one other couple in the restaurant area. Out table was not set properly until our food arrived.
They have only recently started serving food, so perhaps they are still learning the ropes. The staff are very friendly and pleasant. There is a woodburning stove in the restaurant area which in winter is really nice.
They need to find some way of cutting off the drinking bar area to the restaurant I think to make this work well. Trying to eat a quiet meal as a couple within earshot of drinkers swearing spoilt the experience for us.
We would go back again but unless it changed in that way, not frequently.
But the food was really quite nice. It could be a very good place to eat.

I was looking forward to eating at the Curlew but our meal which had been booked for a month was cancelled at the last minute, not because of illness. Very poor, with not much of an apology. Doesn't give you confidence to book again.

Hi Rosemary
Can you please let us know what day and when your booking was for?
We have no bookings in your name and as we had a period of holiday absence in the kitchen, no meals have been booked for this period.
Please feel free to email us at info@curlew.pub and we'll do our very best to resolve this issue.
Kind regards, Russ

I am still cross with the Curlew and felt we were treated very shabby indeed.

Had a very enjoyable meal here, my husband and I popped in for a drink and saw they had just started a food menu so decided to have some lunch and was really impressed.
I had the pie of the week and my husband had the hunters chicken, both dishes were piping hot we didn’t wait very long and the service was spot on. For a place that has just started serving food I think they are doing really well, would definitely recommend and looking forward to going back on a Sunday and trying their roast dinner :)

This pub is in the town where we live and has recently been refurbished. I have never been in this pub prior to lat Sunday as it always looked a bit run down. Well now, it is absolutely lovely and the staff are very friendly and helpful. We went for Sunday Roast and both had beef which came with Yorkshire, stuffing, cabbage, broccoli and carrots with love goose fat roast potatoes, plus extra gravy. It was cooked to perfection as well and we both really enjoyed our meal. We will definitely be going back for more. Plus bonus is that they allow dogs in too which means we will have to end up in there after a few doggy walks I think :-)
