About
Once an ordinary house in an ordinary street, Talliston has been transformed into "Britain's Most Extraordinary Home" (The Times). Behind an arched oak door set in a thicket hedge lies Talliston House & Gardens. This once ordinary house hides a magical labyrinth of rooms, each set in a different time and place. Twenty-five years in the making, the project has taken the most ordinary of English dwellings – a three-bedroomed, semi-detached, ex-council house in Essex – and painstakingly transformed it into a wonderland of inspirational locations where time truly has no power. The finished house and gardens comprises thirteen stunning locations. Each room is infused with a rich story, incorporating almost 2,000 objects sourced from 27 countries around the world – and set in a labyrinth design where guests get to leave behind the outside world and walk between the walls of reality.

Once inside in this house it comes just comes alive with pure wonderment. Without giving away too much of the surprise element the guide gives a very good narrative as you go round the house. Well worth a visit.

Enter the world of imagination and beautiful creativity!
Wow! What an imagination the lovely owner John has! We had a tour today by John himself. This house is spectacular, each room with a story to tell full of interesting items. It’s a house that not only is pleasing to look at, there are smells too. Johns passion for his house comes over in his enthusiastic talk. I felt like a child again excited and in complete wonder at all that was around me. We then sat and had tea together, strangers who all seemed to connect in conversation and laughter. The house was alive with smiles and joy. Thank you John for sharing your beautiful talent and creativity with us today. As adults may we never lose that sense of wonder, it’s there if only we look…..

    Wow! A Whole New World
Wow! If ever you fancy something special and different for a Weekend away then look no further.. Talliston House is an amazing getaway experience! You are welcomed by the owner/designer John (also a great Author) into a whole new World. So much attention to detail. You will marvel at it all. If you fancy a Souvenir I can wholeheartedly recommend his Online Shop and also his Books. The Village is lovely also. A beautiful Tudor Indian Restaurant just up the road and also a great Pub called The Angel & Harp just a stroll away through the Village. My Wife and I both had an unforgettable experience.

    Reality suspended!
“Amazing” doesn’t begin to describe this house. From the moment you enter the garden you will transported to a magical fantasy world. So much to take in throughout the house and gardens. Great guides and a lovely intimate tour! Highly recommended. It would be wrong to share too many photos as it could spoil the surprises!

Great way to spend a couple of hours
Really glad we did this tour, it's certainly something different. We thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the different rooms and how they'd been decorated/set up. Our guide Jane was informative and made the tour very interesting.

There is nothing to compare to this home. You simply have to stay there to understand how special it really is.
Intriguing, astounding, amazing, unique. Talliston House and Gardens is all of this and so much more. It was intrigue which brought us to the house in the first instance. Talliston had been mentioned to us by a friend, and so we booked an overnight stay. We arrived to a warm welcome from John, and then were left to settle into our home for the night. John’s home is astounding. His attention to detail throughout the house is wondrous. Whether you have chosen to visit because you are following the story from the books, or are just looking for a B&B for the night, you will never experience an environment like this anywhere else in the world. Talliston may have started as a humble council house, but the transformation is amazing. Staying in the house takes you on a journey from continent to continent, while also travelling through time. Not a detail has been spared as you encounter each room. A truly unique home from home, with a warm welcome, a great host and an characterful ambiance. Talliston House and Garden get 11 out of 10 in all categories from us.

When you walk through the door of this ex council house you are in for the most delightful inspiring surprise !
Nothing can prepare you for what you will see as you explore the 13 rooms plus gardens of this amazing place.
From the in incredible imagination of John Tarrow you will travel the world through different centuries.
We went on a 2 hour morning tour which was followed by tea & cake & the opportunity to meet & talk with John - a most unique & interesting man.
I can’t wait to visit again - maybe an evening tour next time.

Definitely worth a visit to this unique house. Guide was very charming. However tour is very elongated and a long time spent in each room before you are allowed to move on.
