About
Woodchester Mansion is a 19th Century Victorian Gothic masterpiece mysteriously abandoned mid-construction in 1873. Hidden in a secluded Cotswold Valley, it is untouched by time and the modern world. This unique Grade 1 Listed Building has been saved from dereliction but it will never be completed, enabling visitors to view the secret building techniques of medieval Gothic builders. Special events are held throughout the year, but do check our open days and times before visiting.

    Stunning location and amazing house.
Today seemed like a good day to go and visit somewhere I'd been wanting to visit since I moved to Gloucestershire over a year ago. Woodchester Mansion did not disappoint.. Stunning location and amazing to get an idea of how this was constructed (although not finished of course) over 200 years ago.. I walked down the path from the car park, which was lovely, but I was happy that there is a minibus that takes you back at a quarter to the hour. I wandered round the house first on my own, went into the cellar which was all decorated for Halloween which was popular with the children. I then joined the tour which went deeper into the history of the house and the building techniques of the era. The bathroom was certainly ahead of its time. A enjoyable afternoon and would thoroughly recommend, but I understand the mansion will be closing for the winter months soon. Finally, the volunteers deserve a mention; they were all very inviting and welcoming too.

    A wonderful day out.
What a wonderful discovery - beautiful, and so atmospheric! Supposedly extremely haunted but we felt nothing but good vibes here, which is probably down to its idyllic location and its wonderful, extremely knowledgeable and dedicated guides. It's well worth taking the tour because the history of the place is fascinating. It's a bit of a walk from the nearest car park - but very lovely. It's downhill to get there from the car park and, luckily, they were running a minibus back up the hill when we visited (which was at Halloween.)

    Bats about Woodchester
Having lived in the area for a number of years, this was one of the local almost hidden spots we hadn’t visited. Leaving the car in the car park we walked downhill for almost a mile through beautiful woods to the unusual mock-Gothic unfinished mansion. The product of one man’s obsession with living a lonesome life amidst splendour and isolation of a 4,000 acre purchase, the mansion was never finished and remains an aberration in the countryside. But it’s definitely worth a visit. Fascinating architecture remains - don’t expect to see anything inside the house, it’s technically a ruin, but one of the more fascinating aspects is that bats have chosen it for their place of refuge too! Hundreds of them; not that you’ll see them except on live video in the daytime. The criticism I have for Woodchester is the café or “Servery”. Sadly this is not up to standard. Prices are OK but the quality of the food and the service were not. We waited for over twenty minutes (the place wasn’t busy) and then food was brought out the pasty barely warm, no coleslaw and the cutlery dirty. Not good enough… But the mansion is very interesting and the volunteers extremely helpful. This is a place with a difference - go and visit!

Well worth the walk, it is amazing.
This place is truly amazing. I feel rather sad at the couple of negative reviews as they obviously didn't do enough research before visiting and the whole point of the building is that it was, sadly, left unfinished due to the death of the owner in 1870. To see the skill of the craftsmen, carpenters and stonemasons up close is incredible. This is all usually hidden behind plaster and paint. To think of the hard work and tenacity of those involved is humbling. It is a long walk from the car park but it is down hill and wearing sensible shoes it is like walking in another time. Thankfully they now run a volunteer minibus from the car park for those unable to do the walk. Check the website for days when they don't have volunteers and the bus isn't running. I was really pleased to see the cafe inside since my last visit. Sadly I have to echo the other review that the service was very slow, we were given wooden cutlery, that is impossible to use for eating a baked potato, when other diners had steel cutlery. We were not offered any water and we missed the start of the tour because it came so late despite telling the lady when we ordered at 2 that we were booked on the 2.30 tour. When our food arrived at 2.25 there was only a few minutes to eat. The food was tasty and good quality which is a bonus and I would eat there again on my next visit. It is a really good idea to go when one of the free tours is available. The volunteer guides are a mine of information and bring the place alive. We will be back.

A highly recommended site to visit.
We went in through the Tinkley gate entrance to the National Trust property for a Pizza lunch with the grandsons, only to find on arrival that the Pizza oven and kitchen were closed for refurbishment. So had to make do with sandwiches. The site gives lovely walks and views. Lots of children's activities going on. From this entrance its a long walk to the Mansion.

Well worth a visit and very reasonably priced
Well worth a visit. It is unusual to see a building of this era in such a condition. It looks like the work only stopped recently, and not back in 1873. The interior is fascinating, seeing it in its unfinished condition.

I love walking my dog here after school drop off, and if you have a National Trust membership parking is free and if you scan your member card the property gets £2 each time you visit. Lovely woodland and house to view from outside.....and lakes, which are wonderful to swim in during the summer on warm days!

I'm glad you enjoy walking your dog in the Park. However, I'd like to gently remind you that this is really the place to review visits to the historic Woodchester Mansion, which is managed by the Woodchester Mansion Trust, and is separate from the National Trust owned Woodchester Park. It's also very important to note that the National Trust do NOT allow swimming in the lakes in summer. There are dangers - at least six people are on record as drowning there. Swimmers also damage the eco-system in the lakes.

The house remains closed due to Covid 19, but a take away cafe was open for light refreshments and snacks. Woodchester is a great place for walks and if you haven't been before there are three different trails to choose from depending on how much time you have. There are beautiful lakes to see, the whole place is family friendly.

I can’t recommend highly enough day in the presence of STEPHEN the master stonemason. He subtly guided us all in a way that allowed all of us be absorbed for 5 hours tap tapping away to go home with really rather wonderful masterpieces of our own. At the same time he subtly informed us about the history of stonemasonry and it’s influences on life today.
In these days of instant fame I truly was honoured to be guided by a master ( it takes 30 years to earn that title !)

What a surprise it was to find this sitting in the depths of a NT Park. The house itself does not belong to the National Trust but is run by a small charity, there is a charge to enter. The architecture is really interesting and the bat viewing facilities are the best I have ever seen. Well worth the admission fee and we will definitely go back. The food is provided by another charity and is tasty and great value. Worth a visit.

If you are a National trust member the parking is free. It is quite a long down hill walk to the house. However there is a free shuttle bus to and from the house. Donations for the bus are welcome.

The staff are very friendly and welcoming and have a real love for the building. There are tours or you can explore by yourself. Only one room is fully finished. it is very interesting to be able to see how the house was constructed.

There is also a room where you can watch live web cam feed of the bats in the roof.

There is a cafe and small shop.
There are picnic tables to eat at on the grass.

This is certainly a house that is well wort visiting and exploring.

Only found out about here as we're members of Historic Houses which is just a few minutes from my Fiancé flat. Still can't understand why the National Trust are charging for parking when house is independently owned. It's 3/4 of a mile walk downhill through woodland to the house. The volunteers are very friendly and knowledgeable. We enjoyed strolling around on a beautiful summer day. The house is as described unfinished but very interesting and would recommend. The property is being improved to stop this beauty decaying. The land and woodland is vast be prepared with proper walking shoes

Glad you found the Mansion interesting & enjoyed the day, thanks for your review. To explain about parking in the National Trust car park. While not an NT property, the Mansion is surrounded by NT land and their car park is the nearest for our visitors.

Enjoyed by all the family. Visited shortly after the estate reopened after the C19 lockdown. The car park had an attendant who pointed out a parking space for us and all felt very organised. The narrower part of the path near the carpark had been marked into a one way system for pedestrians which was helpful. Although the mansion is currently closed, the grounds are still well worth a visit and take a fair while to explore. The children enjoyed the play trail and all the dogs being walked seemed to be in their element. We will be back again soon.

The tour guide, called Frances was absolutely brilliant, not only informative but a great laugh and very jovial.
This isn't the first time I've been but definitely the best.
If your lucky enough to have Frances as your tour guide you will be very lucky. Many thanks to a wonderful finish to a fantastic birthday.
