Went as special treat for our wedding anniversary. Wow what an exceptional place.
We were made to feel very welcome, staff are amazing, food delicious.
Rooms are just beautiful, very clean and facilities best I've seen.
I can't recommend this hotel enough, we will certainly return.
Thank you everyone at Thornbury Castle Hotel for making our anniversary one to remember.

Wow factor!! Probably the best hotel I've ever staying in! Being a castle and having to climb up a spiral staircase case up the tower to your bedroom is so cool! Food was amazing, so nicely put together, with bursts of flavour. All staff outstanding, they should run an academy for other hotel staff!! OK, this was also one of the most expensive places I've stayed too, and out of most people's budget but if you were to save up for an experience of a lifetime, you won't go wrong booking here.

The rating is primarily based on the value proposition and expectations from a £650 per night (including breakfast & dinner).

The castle is stunning and if you are looking for a stay in a real castle then this is the place. We had a gorgeous room with a four poster bed and a very refurbished bathroom with furniture and surroundings very much in line with the period and the place.

The food was really excellent and some of the best food we have had in our last 3 years in the UK. Even the wine menu was pretty good.

The staff were exceptionally friendly and tried their best to remain attentive to our needs.

The problem is that there were just too many issues that were, for the most part, very likely down to poor training which ultimately eroded the value proposition. These varied from heaters that didn’t work, an evening turn down service that was so bad it was questionable if the staff had ever turned down a room before, poor cleaning and a room where you could hear the dog next door barking (who just happened to have owners that were obviously incapable of training their dog).

There were other small issues that quite frankly I wouldn’t mention in an average hotel with average rates but the problem is that this isn’t an average hotel and does not have average rates.

So yes the castle and for the most part, the food, was fabulous but the attention to detail in many respects was sorely missing which again I believe was due to poor training and lack of process.

So the last question is would I return and while I probably would not as I just don’t believe the experience was in line with the value proposition or the service was in line with expectations, I might be tempted to go back for dinner as the food was very good.

An incredible piece of living history - and an opportunity to be in the same rooms where Henry VIII and Ann Boleyn stayed 500 years ago!

Visit: beautiful flower and herb gardens, with a gorgeous church beside the property, perfect for photographs. Paintings and architecture inside the castle are incredible - sign up for the history tour and you’ll learn all about the symbolism and intrigue from that period.

Dine: If you can do the six-course tasting menu, DO IT. Absolutely incredible flavors, beautifully prepared, and served in an octagonal room in the castle.

Stay: The rooms are cozy (we visited on a cool October evening and the room was toasty warm) and sumptuous with old wooden doors and shutters and (ours had) a four-poster bed. Newly-done bathrooms and a great shower topped it off.

A fantastic addition if you’re traveling to the west of England - very close to the Cotswolds, Bristol and Bath.

Thornbury Castle is an amazing Tudor castle in Thornbury, England. King Henry VIII had his honeymoon with Anne Boleyn here in the King’s Bedchamber (a room that is available to rent) which has the largest four poster bed in the United Kingdom. The castle consists of multiple buildings that are not all joined together and has a feeling of not being fully consolidated, kind of bolted together. However it’s small enough to explore all the different areas and rooms both inside and out and the staff are all very friendly and willing to impart their knowledge of the building if you stop them and ask any questions. The gateway is magnificent and the library and restaurant are amazing. There is a staircase next to reception that allows access to some rooms upstairs and these are incredible too. I recall one being a large dining room and one perhaps being a conference room but all were period and decorated with antique pictures, ceramics and artifacts from a bygone age. The library has a suit or armour and a delightful sofa and comfy armchair set up next to the decorated Christmas tree. The restaurant is fabulous and the food we were served was exquisite. We stayed in two of the suites (we were here for a week over Christmas/New Year 2021/22 and had to move rooms halfway through due to the length of our stay which was not a problem at all in fact it was nice to experience more than just one of the rooms). Both rooms had four-poster beds. The service during our stay was exceptional from the initial checking-in to the snacks that can be served in some of the public areas, to the restaurant where the black tie service is phenomenal. We loved wandering around outside too, exploring the hidden gardens, and just generally soaking up the atmosphere of this wonderful 500 year old building. Unfortunately there’s a P.S. to this review. We used the website to book Sunday lunch for multiple Wedding Anniversaries in September 2022. They called me two weeks before to say that while they’d had the reservation for several months, they were unable to accommodate us due to the reservation stating 2 people despite the fact that I had clearly noted the reservation was for 6 people in the instructions. So words of warning - it appears they don’t read the reservation details until nearly the time of the event and no compunction about cancelling at short notice, and worse, It appears that they would rather ruin three wedding anniversaries than just push two table together so six people in the same party can dine together. So, one star removed for not caring about returning guests or being able to work outside of the box.

I stayed here with my three teen/tween children for two nights. We had booked the gatehouse but they let us know it was unavailable due to renovation so gave us two rooms at the same price. The whole experience was wonderful, the service was top notch. The rooms were huge and gorgeous. We had dinner there one night that was delicious and the breakfast every morning was icing on the cake. It was the perfect mix of history and luxury. If I get the chance I will definitely go back.

My family stayed overnight and I joined them for dinner, preceded with drinks and canapés in the beautifully furnished drawing room. I also had a guided tour of their three rooms, all of which were delightful and exactly what any visitor would hope for in a castle - with comfort an obvious priority. One of the teens was very taken with the roll top bath in his bathroom, as were his parents with their four poster!
We ate from a la carte menu, and the food was delicious and beautifully presented. Service was excellent, if a little slow, but the quality of the food more than compensated for this.
A lovely place to stay or go for a meal.

My wife and I were given a Thornbury Castle voucher for Afternoon Tea with Champagne for our 70th birthday. We booked to go in December when we knew the Christmas decorations would be up. When we arrived we were shown into a room where the only decoration was a garland over the fireplace. The room was quite chilly, the fire was not lit. Very disappointing as there was another tea room where the fire was lit and fully decorated including two Christmas trees.
The tea arrived after about half an hour and was enjoyable.
The staff were very pleasant but we had to find somebody to replenish our pots of tea and ask for our champagne.
The glass of champagne turned out to be a low end sparkling white wine - not what we expected.
I wrote to Thornbury Castle on 15th December and received an email to say they would reply within five days. It's now the 27th December and still no contact.

A wonderful experience for history buffs. Thornbury has a lovely village atmosphere and a good base to explore surrounding areas although I would expect to stay here was perhaps the only thing you did !
