About
This intriguing castle has been the home of the Berkeley family for more than 850 years. It has been used a filming location for many period dramas, including the BBC's Wolf Hall, Galavant and The White Princess. It was the last place of residence of King Edward II, who was imprisoned in the castle and murdered within its walls. The Castle is open from Easter until the end of October, from Sunday until Wednesday each week. Please check our website for details open days and hours - we are always closed on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

    Definitely worth a visit
I must say this is one of the best historic attractions that I have been to for some time. I think there is a clear difference between this place and other, similar priories owned by the likes of the National Trust - I enjoyed this experience much more. The displayed information as you walk around really brought history to life. I’d definitely recommend visiting here if you’re nearby.
Thank you for your wonderful review. We are delighted to hear you had a fantastic visit to the Castle.

Worth paying extra for the tour
Excellent castle to visit, better than I thought it'd be and worth paying that bit extra for the tour guide. Particularly enjoyed the beautiful gardens on a May day. Henry V111 & his wives, along with Oliver Cromwell made a visit, and did an amusing Blind Date sketch in the marquee in the gardens. Children (& adults!) loved it - it was particularly good for education on the royals, as the actors were very interactive and encouraged the audience to ask them lots of questions. They also posed for photos around the castle. Would recommend visiting Berkeley Castle.
Thank you for taking time to write such a lovely review. We are so pleased to hear that you enjoyed your visit to the castle and gardens.

    A proper hidden gem
Extremely welcoming from the moment of arrival! The staff in the ticket office were friendly, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Guides were available to answer questions as I made way around the castle. A very striking building from the outside and filled with interesting decor and artefacts. Some very interesting stories and history (which I won’t mention so as not to spoil a visit).
Thank you for your lovely review, we are so pleased to hear you enjoyed your recent visit to the castle.

    Great Jousting event.
We came to see the jousting display today. It was great. Such a good atmosphere, we enjoyed the display that the Nottingham knights put on. The castle itself it nice, lots of exhibits in good condition. It did get quite busy in between jousting displays. The woodland play area is great for different ages. Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. For info- If you pay for a day pass, this entitles you to a year pass.
Thank you for your lovely review. We are so pleased to hear you enjoyed our Joust weekend.

    A superb say out!
What a fantastic place to visit. Took my grandson who is 5 to the annual 'Joust Event' . It was a wonderful experience and the perfect setting for it! A an extra bonus we were given free entry to the castle for the next 12 months, that really made our visit extra special. We didn't even make it into the castle to look around a the Joust entertainment was so good we really didn't want to miss the second performance. Totally brilliant day out. One very happy little boy in the way home in the car. We will be back!
Thank you for your review. It is great to hear that you enjoyed our recent Jousting event. We look forward to welcoming you back to the castle soon.

One of the nicest castles that we have visited
This is fairly small (by castle standards!) but beautifully kept both inside and out. Far superior to many of the National Trust properties that we visit. Parking is easy and convenient, all the staff we spoke to were lovely and everything is just so beautifully presented and kept inside and out. Well worth a visit!

    Good experience - worthwhile
More of a stately home to my eyes - very nice to tour and made much more enjoyable by taking one of the organised tours (which are not much extra) The onsite coffee and bus service is not up to the rest of the castle however - expensive and not nice. Car park is quite big and well located. The Gardens are worth wandering around. Quite a bit of history to wade through if you want to - otherwise the artefacts and the building are just as interesting. Opening hours are reasonable.
Thank you for your lovely review, and we are pleased to hear you enjoyed your tour. We are currently redeveloping our Walled Garden, which includes our restaurant & shop, and this will be opening in 2024. It has meant that this year we have had to reduce our food & drink offering. I am sorry to hear you had a poor experience.

What a fabulous place to visit, it oozes history and there’s so much to see: furniture, works of art and many different rooms. The guides are very knowledgeable and happy to explain the history. Plenty for kids to see as well.

This has been , & continues to be my favourite castle. I have visited 4 times, spaced over 40 years ( I live in Yorkshire)and really wish I lived nearer so I could visit regularly! My first visit on a school trip in 1977 bowled me over. It was the first intact and furnished castle I'd ever visited & set a high bar for other castles to live up to over the years. This visit was probably the best visit of them all ,as the gardens had really come into their own in June, and we had not visited in Summer before.
The castle itself never disappoints. So much history, so many rooms open for us to see. The guided tour was great, I think the guide was called Diana & she answered all questions,& her enthusiasm was infectious. Without a tour, it would be easy to miss out on some of the stories. We also visited the church & graveyard, but were too late to visit the Edward Jenner museum on this occasion ( a reason, if one were needed, to return!)
I recommend this castle wholeheartedly, it is easy to spend a full day here as there is so much to see. Credit to the gardeners/ ground staff, the roses alone are spectacular! I'm sure I will be back!

Lots to see. Well looked after castle, still lived in. Survived the Civil War largely intact.
Many rooms and gardens to explore. Helpful staff. Decent parking. Not particularly cheap but still good value for all there is to see.

This is a substantial and very interesting castle. It is privately owned and operated, so some parts are not open, but there is lots to see.
We booked in for a guided tour and that added so much to our experience. The guide was well informed and had many stories to share.
The castle has its dark side though ... particularly the imprisonment and murder of Edward II, and you will be in the room where that happened (allegedly)
