About
Salford Museum and Art Gallery was the UK’s ‘first free public library’, which opened in January 1850, followed in November by a museum and art gallery. The building was a mansion house known as Lark Hill, which had been built in the 1790s and has given its name to our famous Lark Hill Place; a Victorian street within the museum. Today, Salford Museum and Art Gallery presents an exciting programme of permanent displays and changing contemporary exhibitions together with a range of events and activities guaranteed to inspire which completes a must visit experience for individuals, families, schools and organisations to come and enjoy. When you have visited the galleries why not pop into our cafe or purchase a souvenir in the museum shop. Our learning and outreach programme allows everyone to get involved with the museum - perhaps taking part in a Victorian washday, learning new crafts or reminiscing with our memory boxes. We offer free admission and welcome all children accompanied by a responsible adult.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Thank you for your feedback and I am sorry you were disappointed by your visit. We do have extensive building work at the museum at present and due to our phased return from the covid-19 lockdown we do only have the ground floor open, hence the booking system in place to make sure it is as clear in the information that we aren’t at full capacity yet and have reduced opening hours. However we will review the information online in light of your comments to make sure it is clear for future visitors, we are sorry if you did not find it so. Our accessible parking bays are currently closed for the building work but we do have lots of parking spaces outside the museum at the moment – all visitors are asked to pay for their parking which helps us to keep the museum free entry and support our work. As the car park gets busier again we will be putting in temporary accessible parking bays for blue badge holders. We do encourage visitors to use the app or phone number as it is contactless so safer in these times, but it does take coins as well as another option if visitors do not wish to download an app or phone up. Thank you again for taking the time to leave a review and we will pass this on to the team.

Quantified visit as poor not based on the museum itself but on the appalling parking arrangement, due to which I would not visit again and would not encourage anyone I know to do so either. When the building is boarded up waiting to be developed into yet more apartments, that’s the time when somebody might listen - when it’s too late. In COVID times, when we are advised to use contactless, you rock up here to find only coins are acceptable. The machine states you can pay by card, but it refused 3 card types. Your only option is to ring/access on line the parking company and give all your personal details which in my case I’m reluctant to do anyway but especially not to a no mark parking outfit. I did go into the museum and ask could I buy something to get change but the answer was no, they don’t deal in cash. So fast forward half an hour and eventually we went into the museum, but by this time, I couldn’t have cared if they had the Crown Jewels on display. Avoid at all costs due to the parking and get your name down for one of the apartments coming soon.

Thank you for your feedback and we are sorry there were issues with the contactless part of the ticketing machine on that day – and that the pay by phone or app options were not something you wanted to use. We are currently cashless due to our covid procedures but we will certainly take your feedback into account as we move out of precautions.

We went today, as online stated Open. No disable parking available, all scaffolding up. Husband went in spoke to a lady she stated we could go in for half an hour to see the street only just for half hour slot, and have to pay £3 Parking. What a laugh.
Decided to give up.
Might try again when all up and running.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. As you say we do have a limited offer at the moment and are running a pre booking service as we are under going a phased reopening from lock down whilst keeping our social distancing measures in place. We hope to be able to welcome you back when the museum is fully open again and when our building works have been completed. Whilst our accessible parking spaces for blue badge holders are currently closed we do have plenty of spaces in front of the museum at the moment, and will be putting temporary blue badge spaces in as the car park gets busier again. We will pass your comments on to the team.

We had a wonderful full day out.
The Victorian Street is so well done and as pensioners we found it very nostalgic.
Very much enjoyed the art exhibitions and had a great value for money lunch in the beautiful cafe.
All the staff were very pleasant and knowledgeable.
Easy to get to by train, just 2 minutes walk from the station.
All in all a great free day out, can't believe we haven't discovered this place before today.

Really enjoyed our visit today . Everyone was friendly and no trouble parking right outside and only £2.50 by card for 3 hours which is plenty for a good look around and lunch or coffee in the cafe. Highlight was the Victorian street and some of the exhibits in the galleries.

Lovely family day out. My 7 year old is learning about the Victorians in school so we went to see the Victorian street and art gallery in particular. Both were excellent. Child friendly, fun and educational. We all loved it. We also looked around the other exhibitions in the art gallery, particularly enjoying the A-Z exhibition. A hidden gem!

The museum was recommended to us by staff at Ordsall Hall and I'm so glad we got to see it. The Victorian Street is absolutely amazing, looks great, authentic and and even has the background sounds of a street. We also enjoyed the gallery. The staff are all lovely and friendly and you're allowed to take photos. There is also a nice park behind the museum, so we got to enjoy the sun after our visit.

I've visited several times, mainly just to see the Victorian Street. I wish there were more period recreations of this type housed there.
The most recent visit was to see the art and associated objects expressing the relationship between people and animals.
While the cafe is nothing special, the architecture of the room and space it offers is lovely, so I always purchase something merely for the feeling of tranquility it seems to provide.

This is a fantastic place. Right by the university. My friends and I had been to the quays to visit the IWM and one of our party grew up in Salford and attended the Uni. He wanted to show us Peel park and the museum is just by the there. So we popped in and the Victorian street is just superb. I had my fortune told on an old machine, that was fun. The other shops were great to look at. Upstairs in the galleries, I was deeply moved by many of the paintings. The Victorian gallery is as good as any I have been in before. The set up and ambience are excellent. The other galleries are also interesting, particularly the current Riley exhibition. This is all free so I always make an effort to buy something. The shop is full of interesting books about Salford and i is was also offered a free Lowry print by the lovely girl who served me at reception, which was nice! We were also able to get parked outside but just make sure you have PayByPhone on your phone as there is no machine. Also, be careful on your way in from the main road as there is a bus lane on the dual carriageway that ends just before the entrance and starts again shortly thereafter. If you don’t know where you’re going and tend to get flustered like me, it can be a bit stressful as this road is one of the busy roads leading into Manchester.

Great place to visit with a wide range of interesting exhibits, including Lark Hill Place. Helpful staff and fairly easy to get around. Nice cafe. Parking is overpriced (as usual).
