About
The course was build in 1908 by James Braid. Its a Parkland course that challenges all classes of golfers. The club house is romantic with an open fireplace and beamed ceilings. In the summer the view from the balcony is simply stunning. The Restaurant facility is excellent. A visit to this club is a great way to keep your golf sharp during any trip

I play this wonderful golf course on a regular basis, and after playing many local courses, this is by far one of the best.

Yes, I will be accused of bias, but only by people who have not recently played this course. In recent years it has grown in stature due to the friendliness of its members, and its attentive staff.

Played here in a Men’s Match. Course in lovely condition with great food and hospitality. Weather was amazing and I’m sure that helped. A real gem of a course. Well worth a visit.

I booked this course for a round on Teeofftimes as I was working in the area.
I contacted the club by email a week before I was due to play and stated that I was a single player and was quite happy to be paired up with other players.
My tee off time was 11:00 so I arrived and had a bacon but tie and a mug of tea in the clubhouse (very nice and reasonable). What the clubhouse lacks in size, is made up with warmth and friendliness. I explained to the person serving that I was due to tee off at eleven o'clock and she informed me that the captain (Terry) and vice captain (Dave) were arriving to join up and play 18 holes with me, after reading the email I sent.
The course is a nine hole course, with eighteen tees. Most of the holes play completely different from the from the respective tees, so playing the nine twice is like playing eighteen different holes. The greens and fairways are in very good condition and the layout of the course is fantastic, one of the most interesting courses that I have played.
We decided to play Stableford for £1 a corner and had great banter all the way round. After playing a few holes, it was like I had been playing with them for years. For the last six holes another member joined us (Graham) who was equally friendly.
The captain won the money (we thought we had to let him win) (it was nothing to do with my duck hook off the tee) so we proceeded to the bar.
Unfortunately I could not have a beer as I was working a night shift that night, however the San Miguel that seemed to be a popular drink, looked lovely. There was plenty more banter as we sat on the patio dissecting the round. A few other members sat and joined us, contributing to the banter. Unfortunately I had to leave after about a hour but I could have stayed there all afternoon / evening.
This is one of the nicest, friendliest courses I have played and if I ever moved to the area, I would join as a member pronto.

A friendly place for a drink and a quick bite during the day. Great views and great banter with the members. Anyone and everyone appears to be welcome and there is always a log fire on the go, the views from the club house are pretty impressive.

Have played a few times here and it is such a welcoming course, it is a testing course that rewards accuracy.

Give it a go you really will not be disappointed.

And well kept beer. Go to the website to take a look. Altongolfclub.com. Good value and the members are happy to go round with you or invite you into the roll up. I agree with Ravensleigh obviously a person of good taste. :)

This is a great 9 hole course (18 tees) which I never get bored playing. The right balance of length and difficulty with good greens, to make it enjoyable for any standard of golfer. Club house is small and friendly with great staff supplying a beer or coffee and hot snd cold snacks/meals. A full Sunday lunch is provided once per month and although I have never had this yet it looks good and is popular with members and visitors.

I love to sit out on the decking which is a sun trap and enjoy a beer, the views and watch the golfers play up the 9/18 hole.

Would recommend this to anyone for a friendly game of golf or a light lunch in a lovely country setting.
