About
Interesting museum that chronicles the life of a typical railway engineer and his family during the 1930s.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We love this museum, good activities for children and is good day out. Learnt lots about the area but text is sometimes small to read. We would come again as good for family days out.

The museam is small, however packed with joy. Learning about where you are from is a delight, from Mr and Mrs Brown, to the always changing rear gallery, my family loves it here, with my mum especially enjoying the cakes and coffees that are on offer in the cafe. Would highly recommend to any age group, also as a safe place, it is perfect for people with disabilities. The staff are friendly and love a conversation. Would highly recommend to all visitors!

A small and very well run attraction in the centre of town. Lots of items depicting the past. Railway memorabilia and maps of the area from many years ago. A contribution is all they ask. Also a small cafe for a decent cup of tea!!

We stopped off at this small museum on our way to Bournemouth, hoping to spend up to an hour there. Alas, we had seen it all in about 10 mins. There was a resource center with lots of ring binders for train spotters, but there was not that much to look at in the rest of the museum. We liked the unusual art exhibition in the back room.

Largely run now by a volunteer staff due to budget cuts. Encompasses a wealth of Eastleigh Railway history including a full size steam loco footplate. Many photos and genuine momentoes from past railway workers. Good array of souvenirs and historical items to purchase. Incorporates a small cofee shop. Regular changing displays are arranged on a particular theme which are of a good standard and obviously require a good deal of work by enthusiasts. Local craft items sometimes available to view and purchase.
Open Tuesday on - not Sunday. Free entry.

What a lovely little place this is! Presumably run by volunteers, who were to say the least very knowledgeable.
It’s only a small museum, however it’s got bags of local history.
You can also stay for a coffee in their nice cafe!

We spotted this online and thought it would be a good place to spend an hour or two on our way elsewhere. We were not disappointed!
The museum is well organized and informative. The main section looks at the life and the home of Mr and Mrs Brown, a train driver and his wife, in 1938. There is also a small section devoted to the Transit van, sadly no longer made in the UK.
Two very charming ladies and a gentleman in a wheelchair, all volunteer staff, made us welcome and provided delicious coffee and biscuits.

The museum service have MILLIONS of items locked in vaults, if only they would display them. This museum is a two minute wonder. Such a waste of all the donated items, and an insult to the wonderful staff.

This is such a small museum that packs some lovely little exhibits into essentially 2 rooms.
The main exhibit is a wartime house and a railway exhibit (due to the Ashleigh railworks). The back room houses temporary displays which change often and are often splendid - saw a fantastic dinosaur illustration artist and a wonderful titanic display in the past.
The toilet is easy access and the museum is enjoyed by all abilities. The volunteers in the tiny cafe/reception are very lovely and welcoming.
The little gift shop is very cheap and has everything from local made honeys and soaps to jewellery and toys. As a lot of little 'crafters' have produce in sale you can find some lovely handmade items at great prices. I have bought a lovely knitted bonnet for a pound, a glass stained glass seahorses for a window at £6 and even a cardigan for 50p!
The coffee and tea are very nice machine made offerings at under £2. Sadly there is no homemade cake but I may just offer up such a service!

Hi, is there an entrance charge!? :)

Free entry. And any special displays they put on in the back room are also free. Staffed by volunteers, also.
