- Susan3 contributionsA fabulous day out in a beautiful settingOpening for the first time this year, on a horrible wet Bank Holiday! Excellent value for money, run by cheerful, helpful, friendly, knowledgeable volunteers! Despite the weather the Azaleas, Rhododendrons & bluebells were fabulous against the bright new tree foliage, can see there have been lots of fresh new plantings! I read the review of the run down sheds with scrap in & think they obviously did not speak to the volunteer's or understand what the machinery was for? Completely missing the point of what Hollycombe is all about! It's a treasure, the money raised is put towards future restorations & upkeep! On this occasion it was just 2 adults, remembering what's changed there over the years, we enjoyed some rides and laughed all the way round the haunted house 😀 just a shame there weren't many people to enjoy it! I thought the food was very reasonably priced & will definitely return with the Grand children next time! So greatful for all the work the volunteers do to keep the place going.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 6 May 2024

We purchased the silver tickets, which gave us enough rides to spend all day there (arrived 11:30 and left at 16:15). The grounds are really nice, plenty to explore. My 9 year old loves all the rides, as did we. Everything seemed to be working and loads more machines in steam than I expected. Recommend people visit the beam engine and farm area, not many people seem to make it down there, but volunteers down there were excellent and keen to show off their machines. Bit disappointed by the cafe, but that wasn’t why we visited. Cold, not much selection, nothing special unfortunately. Would like to return for one of their event daysVisited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 7 May 2024
- slarti b2 contributionsDisappointing, far from as advertised.Went to an open day, not sure why, but I thought I was going to see working steam engines. There was a portable engine in steam who's main purpose seemed to be providing steam for the galloper centre engine. Apart from that, there was the centre engine on the chairoplanes and a narrow gauge loco pulling the garden railway. Nothing else was in steam. There were engines in plenty around the site ranging from as recovered condition to fully restored, all cold and mostly under cover. The only things really open were the fairground and railway. The steam farm and beam engine were cold, dead and abandoned, mostly, they hadn't even bothered to take the covers off. To all appearances the majority of the collection was closed. Enjoyable, but very poor value for money.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 August 2024
- Mick VHorsham, United Kingdom331 contributionsExcellent All Day VisitExcellent visit with three grandsons. Everything was in steam; the rides were all as per scheduled on the boards, and at a not unreasonable price. Friendly, informed and genuine staff, most if not all are volunteers. I've added some pictures from the lovely indoor / outdoor café as it wasn't clear whether there was much on offer (the website being temporarily down when we looked) and pretty much all of the photos we could find are of the engines and fairground attractions. As well as the stuff pictured, they also had tea, coffee (naturally), pasties, sausage rolls and turnovers on the counter, plus beer flavoured crisps. In the middle of nowhere, the car's SatNav was spot on so easy to find. This attraction is not Legoland, Chessington or Thorpe Park; it's substantially different and vastly better value for money at a reasonable price IMHO. Thoroughly recommended. After driving past this on the A3, I’d been wanting to go here for years. We decided to come here on the model weekend on 6th/7th July for my birthday and as a group we were all very disappointed.
We went for the “silver” option on the door because we were advised by the lady in the kiosk that this was the best value as everyone gets 10 rides - £60 for a family of 4 versus £40 on the website. I get that you’re trying to encourage people to buy in advance but a 50% uplift is ridiculous!
When we got in there we realised that there weren’t 10 rides total to go on so it just seemed very money grabbing. We do a lot of family days out, so if I compare this to other places we’ve visited; Weald and Downlands museum, Portsmouth historic dockyard, etc, this seems hilariously overpriced.
To cap it off, the whole atmosphere seemed like it was more of a social club for the volunteers rather than a welcoming attraction open to the public. It wasn’t really clear how to get to attractions or when things were running.
I’m genuinely gutted as we were really looking forward to the visit, and we never leave bad reviews as I realise they are charities and rely on volunteers, but I feel quite strongly about the extremely poor value.
In the end, we cut our losses and left after about 1.5hrs. We won’t be visiting again …

While I am completely aware that this is a volunteer run attraction and dependant on the number of people who turn up to assist on the day, it was rather disappointing that as yet not all the rides etc. are open which is not mentioned on the website. The café was also closed on the day of our visit, again not on the website. Everything that we did do was enjoyable, but didn't find enough to do to warrant a whole day there as we had intended and left after just 3 hours.

Dear JackieBarb,
Thank you for leaving feedback regarding your visit. I am sorry to read that you were disappointed. The rides under maintenance; Steam Yacht, Razzle Dazzle and The Big Wheel are not listed as running on our website. I will look to see if there is a way of making it clearer as I can appreciate that their omission from the website didn't help in this instance.
We are looking for a new cafe tenant at present and have been working with outside caterers to make up for this by way of food vans offering a selection of food. Again I will consider the wording on the website to ensure future visitors are not disappointed by this as you were.
If you have any further comments please email us on info@hollycombe.co.uk
We value your support and we hope to see you again in the future. We are working hard to keep our unique collection alive for future generations.
Best wishes

Such a disappointment! We have always visited Hollycombe and the kids were so excited that it had reopened. The tickets however were not the normal annual pass that they have been previously, I was reluctant to spend so much for just a 1 off visit but decided to go anyway as it's always been so fun. When we arrived there were only a handful of rides open and these were suitable for 4 and under at a push. The only thing ok for us was the ghost house, miniature railway, steam roller (not really the fun rides the kids were expecting) which was extremely expensive in comparison to the ticket prices. I feel we should have been told before going that most of the rides were not up and running (carousel, big wheel etc). Not happy and felt it was seriously overpriced for what was on offer.

Very disappointing visit. After many many years of visiting Hollycombe as a kid, and now as an adult with my wife and little girl, we were extremely disappointed.
We have always loved Hollycombe but after today's visit we have decided never to go back. We asked on the gate if we could buy a yearly ticket but this time we were told its not available this year, which seemed strange, as on Hollycombes Facebook page, I had seen someone else ask the question if it was available and Hollycombe had replied saying, yes it is! Which was false information!
We then paid full price (over £50) only to find that the big wheel, steam yacht and spinning top, 3 of the popular rides, had gone.
I don't see how they can charge still full price when some of the main attractions are not there, also we missed out on our ride on the steam tractor, which we found was the last one of the day, all because there were no signs to say where the start and finish of the queue was, unfortunately we were told we were at the front of the queue when we were actually at the back and then when we moved to the back, we were then told that this was the front of the queue?? So by the time we then moved to the back again, we then totally lost our place and missed the last ride of the day which left my little girl in tears! So disorganised!!!
It all looked so shabby now and unloved, and I'm not surprised, as if they carry on running it like this, then I'm sure many won't come back again... a real, real shame!
You can't sell tickets at the price of big venues, when there's nothing much running. I know it's run alot by volunteers, and I hate to moan about venues when I know it must be hard to run as everything's gone up in price, but I really felt like I had been robbed today.

Thank you for your feedback. I am saddened that you did not enjoy your day.
Annual passes are still available but at a different pricing structure as opposed to the pay once gift aid scheme that ran some years ago. Under the standard day ticket pricing visitors can enjoy the rides for as little as £1.24 per ride for a child including the 2 railways. We have faced rising costs in fuel with coal almost 6 times higher than it was in 2019 and our energy bills having risen sharply. Ticket income only goes a small way towards those increases and we feel the price per ride is a competitive price.
I was not aware of an issue with the traction engine ride queue and there is a sign to direct visitors where to queue. We will monitor this and ensure it is clear, I'm not sure if other visitors stated where the queue started and finished or if a volunteer misinformed you, either way that is not the norm and we go out of our way to ensure everyone has the opportunity to enjoy all of the rides.
Work on the Big Wheel is underway and we look forward to its return to Hollycombe. Currently our offering is 3 big fairground rides, 3 children's fairground rides, ghost house, hall of mirrors, bioscope shows, fairground organs, steam farm, narrow-gauge railway, garden railway, traction engine rides, beam engine, portable engines in steam, the gardens and side stalls in the fairground.
We host special events through the year to suit visitors that have a specific interest; our Steam Rally being geared towards those interested in Steam, the Fairground Weekend in August which features more rides and the Model Weekend in September for those interested in miniature steam and models.
Our aim is to give visitors a balanced day out with lots to see and do beyond the fairground. If the fairground was central to your visit and you weren't aware of the current offering then I can appreciate your disappointment. We will continue to work on bringing rides back (which takes time, money and more volunteers) as well as ensuring visitors are aware of the current offering so visitors know what to expect.
Yours sincerely

Very disappointed we have not visited since before Covid and as we use to take our grand children every year we were really looking forward to taking them again. It cost us £62 for one standard 2 adult + 2 children ticket plus 1 child standard ticket. I thought we may have to buy more tokens for the rides but we came home without even having all our rides clipped. In the past we use to be able to return but now it is for one visit only. The carrousel and the chain chairs were open but none of the other big rides two of our grand children were too big for the two little car rides and little chain swings and even our five year old did not want to go on them.
Despite all of this we had a lovely afternoon as it brought back lots of great memories but for value for money then absolutely not

We went to see the machinery working and were not disappointed. The website showed that the children’s rides were operating and our three year old grandson had four rides on the merry-go-rounds and watched with interest as the water tank on the showman’s engine was refilled with water. All this to the cheery music of the organ! But the real hit of the day was the steam roller, most impressive. You could go for a ride on the trailer. He was thrilled to pull the steam whistle at the steam farm and watched the steam driven saw at work. There were several engines working in various places. He also had a good look at the line up of vintage tractors. The enthusiasm of the volunteers was a pleasure to see and the day ended with a ride on the steam train. We felt it was a good day out at the end of the season and would be happy to go again, given that all this was included in the price.

What a lovely evening! Perfect weather for the pretty lights and sounds of steam powered rides, engines and music from fairground organs. Rode on 2 different trains, the carosel, ate blue candyfloss and laughed in the funny mirrors. We rounded off by watching a Buster Keaton short in the bioscope theatre, accompanied by an organist playing the music and telling us all about it! Educational and lots of fun.

Hollycombe Steam Collection is a wonderful place that is saving precious items of our history and heritage for future generations. It is staffed by passionate and knowledgeable volunteers who add to the experience of visiting.
I made my first visit over the weekend of its annual fairground extravaganza and I know that this meant there were some extra attractions that had been brought along that weekend by collectors and enthusiasts, but looking at the information about what is available at other times of the year I can see there is enough to make this a wonderful family day out any time.
You approach it down a narrow country lane from the village of Liphook in Hampshire. It is signposted and you enter through what looks like a small industrial estate. On the days when it is open there will be a volunteer to direct you where to park. There is plenty of space to park even when they are hosting a special event. They do seem to prefer you to book in advance, especially for the big events, so they can predict numbers and ensure the day runs smoothly.
The place is set in beautiful woodlands and gardens which make a picturesque walk when you want a break from the fun. There is open countryside all around too.
There is a choice of two railway rides to enjoy. The steam-driven Quarry Railway covers a loop of a mile and a quarter and the views you get to enjoy across the South Downs are stunning. If you don't mind a more snug fit, there is also a miniature steam railway that takes you through the gardens that were part of the Hollycombe estate.
There are rides suitable for children and adults can comfortably join them on the galloping horses, the chair-o-planes, in the haunted cottage and the hall of mirrors.
A short walk round the site takes you to a very interesting steam farm that features historic items that our ancestors would have used in agriculture.
There are good, clean toilets, a cafe and a gift shop. Picnic benches are also dotted around for those who want to bring their own food.
If the weather isn't as kind as it was over the 2024 August Bank Holiday weekend, you can also enjoy a 15-minute film show in the reproduction bioscope show. I've never seen one of these before and it was great to experience how people would have enjoyed the very first moving pictures on travelling fairs back in the 1890s and early 1900s.
Hollycombe is constantly fundraising and looking out for more volunteers so that it can restore other rides in its care and I hope they thrive and grow in the years to come. I will certainly be returning.

Bit disappointed by the cafe, but that wasn’t why we visited. Cold, not much selection, nothing special unfortunately.

Brilliant hidden gem in the Sussex countryside!
We visited Hollycombe Steam Collection on a complete spur of the moment trip, after seeing the sign on a drive back from Goodwood.
Brilliant rides, lovely gardens and tasty food - what more could you want?1
The volunteers were amazing and made us feel really welcome, thanks all for a fantastic day out,
